Fellow SC Buellers:

Leaves are changing color in mountains around Asheville; motorbiking paradise. I highly recommend for the next couple weeks. Biltmore West Hotel is cheapest at present, and decent breakfast. There is a great German restaurant in Arden (Black Forest)- try the sauerbraten with Pinot Noir (pino no-whar). No room for the apple strudel.

I strapped the bicycle to the sporty car and bicycled a cumulative 6,000 elevation feet in the mountains over two days, for a long slow fat burn. For sheer excitement try riding down 2,000 ft at 50mph on a bicycle with 1/4 inch tire contact, thru 5 dark tunnels and 50degF- probably crazy, but a thrill nonetheless - eclipses Buelling by only a bit.

Lot's of friendly Harley and BMW Adventure type riders waving all the time; 1/2 with pillions - the smiling and waving frozen women.

Go back into Asheville on Sunday and grab a sandwich and coffee before heading home.

Back to reality.

The wife got a speeding ticket once on I-40 in Asheville NC. Mandatory court date even if your just 5 over.

Riding up there sounds good. hopefully I can afford the time for it.

By the way. Nov 25th Sunday 2007 is the 27th annual toys for tots run in Anderson SC. My wife is originally from Anderson and now that we have a motorcycle she wants to do it. Starts at the south side Watson village up to the civic center. I watched it last year. They estimated over 2000 bikes was in the rally.

Guys,

I need some ideas/help please.

Problem: After a 20 minute ride; the engine sputtered briefly in a left hand turn from a stationary position. Two minutes later the engine quit on level pavement.

Put battery tender on the bike over night.

Ran/rode the bike for 25 minutes no problem, stopped the bike for 10 minutes. Ran/rode for another 20 minutes and then the engine quit running.

Checked battery voltage after run = 13 volts.

Installed stock ECM same results.

Checked clean new sparkplugs and wires same result.

It appears that every time the engine reaches a temperature it shuts down.

I had just completed my 10,000 mile check and TPS reset.

Gary,
I'm more of a carb. guy, but I did own a 03 Firebolt for a few years and once sleep at a Holiday Inn Express.
I feel sure they caused the problem when they did the TPS reset.I don't have the procedure down but some where in there they adj. the value to 100percent and if done incorrectly the engine will fall below idle, sputter and die when it reaches operating temp. Mine had the same problem when I first got it.Had another shop re due the TPS,no more problem.....Charlie

I agree with Charlie, Also make sure they set the TPS when the bike is good and warm, not when its cold.

I did the TPS reset with the engine hot. Several times as a matter of fact. When performing the reset it is most important to make sure the butterfly valve is fully closed when setting "zero". This is where most TPS resets go bad. Leaving the valve open the slightest bit can ruin it.

What I found was once the engine reaches 413 degrees the engine starts to sputter and stops. Once the engine cools it runs fine. Using the VDSTS I tested the fuel pump, injectors, and both coils of which all passed. Because of the relationship of the shutdowns to engine temperature, I have ordered an engine temperature sensor which should arrive Wednesday.

LaFayette,

Congrats on the speedo. You are THE iron butt.

Now I need some advice from all of you. I'm traveling from Charleston to Jacksonville, FL this weekend and I'm considering taking the 2000 X1 which just rolled over 15,000 miles.

It has not been in a dealership since 5200 miles when the engine was rebuilt b/c of a rod knock.

I've kept up with the oil and primary case fluid changes.

What should I check before I go on this road trip and what should I take with me? I have a good size tank bag so I am able to carry quite a bit of stuff.

Hugh, I've already picked up a sheepskin car wash mit; now I'm trying to figure out where to get a/some gel pads to go under it.

Your input is appreciated.

Jeffsd:

IMHO !!!

Before you leave check your engine oil at operating temperature on the sidstand(always check your oil after a ride on the sidestand) to make sure the oil level is where it is supposed to be ...

Your transmission oil level with the bike in the upright position with both wheels on level ground the oil should be at the bottom of the clutch diaphragm spring ...

Before you gas up to start down to Jacksonville, put 9.5 oz. of STS GAS TREATMENT in the gas tank and then gas up(every 5K also do this) ...

If you want better tire wear/gas mileage put 38 PSI in the front tire and 40 PSI in the rear tire ...

The BEAD SEAT COVER that you have seen on my S3T works for me ...

Believe we have talked about primary chain/drive belt specs ...

Lubricate your clutch lever where the clutch cable end goes ...

HAVE A SAFE TRIP !!!

Just bring a wrapped gift and we group ride to the VA Hospital. We may try to meet up with any other SC Buellers at a nearby location and then ride over to the Honda meeting place as a group (or not). Usually gets done around 3:30 or so. Depends on how much chit chatting is done afterward. We usually leave when finished dropping off the gifts.
See you

Hey guys,

Man, I haven't been able to ride in almost a month; new job has me on the road for 10-12 days at a time. Finally I'm home for a few days so I took the Uly back up to Francis Marion National Forest yesterday. I got caught in heavy traffic in Moncks Corner (evidently a charity M/C ride) but finally made it to the forest around 2 PM.

I decided to hit some of the forest roads yesterday. I'll bet I went at least 30 miles on dirt, only crossing one paved road and I could have gone much farther. There's not much to see back in there besides pine trees (and an occasional cypress or oak) but it was nice to get away from civilization for a while. The only people or vehicles I saw the whole time were a couple on bicycles which I saw shortly after getting off the pavement. I maintained 40-45 MPH easily on most of these roads which are well-graded and dry. My home-made detailed map was a big help.

Hopefully we can still do a group SC mountain ride before the year's out.

I know the feeling hugh about being away from your bike for extended periods of time. I'd like to do a mountain ride but I don't know if it'll be this season, cash is always tighter than normal during this season.

away to pass the time I created this spread sheet which turns engine RPMs into mph based on several variables such as gear ratio & wheel diameter.

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=piMa420IFsf gb2gr2Irt5fg

this is created in google documents speadsheet program, a nifty little piece of java. if you want a gmail acount just ask me, i'll invite. Besides that I created shift points, IE when you take a gear up to a certain rpm (for this I choose the peak HP rpm) and you upshift what RPM will you be at. You can see that on the XB12 series its not evenly spaced, as compared to the 1125r. Also interesting to note is that the 1125r overall gear ratio is higher than that of the XB, indicating the lack of low end torque. What gives the 1125r its high topend is its higher redline.

Anyway take a look, tell me what you think, if you want the actual spreadsheet I have the MS excel file and I can convert to anything you need.

Charlie, i found out the handle bar clamps were for a s3. Im going to try and return them tomorrow. The bike is apart right now, hopefully i should have it back together by the weekend... maybe.

Anyways, local guys, you want to ride and get some lunch soon? Somewhere close that has good food. Let me know.

So the clamp won't work for you? Bummer.
I thought for sure we could poke a couple of holes in it and mount that dash.
I've been chasing elec.grimlins this week on mine. So far had a bad flasher and a short in the tail light.A handful of blown fuses and still not positive I've got all of them. After about three years and no problems with it, I guess I was due.At least none have been expensive yet.....Charlie

Yeah, before i started to drill into it, i tried to get the new tach to seat onto the clamp like it should and it wasnt even a close match. If i cant return it, then we can try to drill and tap it, better than just having it sit.

I pm'd cityxslicker and he can get me to right clamp for a lot cheaper than lowcountry can.

Let me know when you have your bike back up and going, im itching to ride again.

Nevrenuf,

Let me know when you want to ride. Today I'm heading up toCaesar’s Head and HWY 178. I can never find anyone to ride with so I got to go at it alone. I just had some problems with my bike and got it running right ... I think. I need a good 3 hour ride to make sure. That's why the ride today.

when you planning on leaving for one and do you plan on hitting it hard or easy. i'm still on break in on the motor and need to take it easy to make sure it breaks in properly after having the whole thing rebuilt. so that means no interstate for right now.
