I was thinking of running South as well, but in Jan/Feb it'll be cold enough to warrant either heated gear or excessive layers at least for the first few hours. Key West made my short list as it's ~950 miles from Raleigh, could easily find another ~50 by adding in a detour. Could even head to Charlotte first and then take 77 down to 95. We could also run Southwest into Texas (could visit Blake) or to New Orleans.

The other thing I'm thinking about is that I'd rather not make this a 20+ hour marathon run. If we can stick to free flowing interstates and minimize the stops to keep the average speed up I think we can do it in 16 hours. That requires the average speed (including stops) to be over 60mph, so that means we have to avoid high traffic areas (Atlanta) and stick to interstates that allow 70+mph travel. I know 95 from Raleigh through Daytona allows relatively uninterrupted travel, but I don't know what it will look like through Miami and further South. Also, I don't know what the speed limit is on US1 through the Keys.

I'm interested! I will have to see as the dates are ironed out, but I want to make an iron butt run. It's on my motorcycling TO DO list. The Keys during the winter sounds like a good place to be.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

US1 through the Keys is slow going.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!

Trish and I just finished a 10 mile run ... now ... time to eat!

p.s., is this IB to be a Buell only event? No hard feelings if it is. Just asking.

Mike, too bad I can't join you. Sometimes I feel like Oak Island is my home away from home. Hope everybody had a great Thanksgiving day. I know I sure did. Anytime Patty and I are able to see our three sons in the same house, simply grateful.

Speed limit is 45 to 55 through most of the Keys, possibly 35 in some spots. Would definitely want to be done with the run before then. I am game for a run, I think mid spring might would be better though. But I can plug in and do it anytime.

Hey here is just a thought, let's make it a run to Homecoming! I'm sure we could find an extra 100 miles or so to make it to 1000. Just got the latest FuellMag, looks good!

NC Buellers- Help!

I'm in Chapel Hill spending the holiday with my wife's family. Stuck something in the rear tire of my Uly on the way up (it was gone by the time the tire went flat). I plugged it and thought everything was fine. Just south of Cheraw, SC that plug let go; had to replug twice more but made it here late Wednesday. Thought everything was OK for the trip home today; made it as far south as Hamlet and tire went flat again. Plug was leaking badly. (Tried both Stop-n-go plugs and good old "sticky rope" plugs and neither will hold.) Wife rented U-Haul truck, got me and bike and we're now back in Chapel Hill. I have access to tools to get the wheel off now; I just need a tire.

Can anybody recommend someplace I might be able to find a Pirelli Scorpion Sync in the Chapel Hill/Durham/Raliegh area? (180/55-17). Ray Price HD/Buell says both the Pirelli and the Dunlop used on the 06 Ulys are not in stock and on backorder. My daughter phoned several places including the Ducati shop in Raleigh today and couldn't find one.

I may have to take whatever I can get but if anyone knows where I might find a Scorpion Sync, I'd appreciate hearing from you. For that matter, if you can recommend any place that's good for buying a tire and getting it mounted, I'd appreciate that too.

Thanks in Advance.

Just spoke with Hughlysses, he got the tire from Jim and we just got done mounting it for him. I hate that we didn't have a tire for him, just further proof that we have some things to improve here.

Thanks for the help and offers of help from the C3'ers.

I picked up the tire from Jim about noon, got over to Ray Price about 12:30, got the tire back about 1:30 and talked to Mike briefly. Got back to Chapel Hill about 2 and had everything back together by 3. I'll be headed back to SC in the morning. Hopefully, I'll make it without incident this time!

I know I'm kind of late on the Iron Butt ride thread; been on the dark side of the moon without internet access over the holiday.
If I'm in town, I'd like to join in on the fun.
Rode down to the Keys in June 07 on the Uly; from Miami south is VERY, VERY slow. You would have to be making great time to that point to make it work. Not impossible mind you and the IBA is about riding the impossible ride safely.
I rode from Melbourne to Key West and back to Palm Springs and in the rain out of the Keys. It was hot! And my brain was fried by the end of the day. I called the wife along side of the road and asked her to make me a reservation at the closest hotel to me and I didn't care what it cost, this is the closest I've ever come to total mental and physical burnout while riding. 574 miles felt like 1,200+.
I would recommend a SUN PASS for the tolls because they are every 1/2 mile around Miami or so it seamed at the time and the IBA requires a receipt for the ride certification for all tolls.
The Fire Dept in Key West was great and had no problems being a witness for our ride start.

#1

This is what the road into and out of Key West looks like from Miami south.

#1

Southern most point in the US.

If you have never done a 1K day before this is a good place to start the preparations and some good ride reports.

Since I was the one who suggested the Keys, let me rethink this.

There isn't really anything in the Keys I want to get to other than the warmth. Miami or Naples are also warm, and they have interstates running to them. It's 739 miles from Charlotte to Naples. It's 107 miles from Naples, to Ft Lauderdale (right above Miami.) It would be easy enough to get 1000 miles and end up in either Naples or Miami. No need to run all the way down to the keys.

That of course assumes we want to go to Florida at all. The easiest thing to do would be run 500 miles down the road, turn around, and come home. I would find that mentally devastating. I need a destination and a reason to go. Florida is attractive to me because the climate provides a reason to go in the near future. If we wait till the summer, we have a lot more options, with homecoming being the most obvious. I don't know have quickly people are interested in doing this.

I would suggest doing an IB with the Daytona 200 as the destination ... but I'm already registered to run a marathon in Umstead Park that day. However, IF I have to pull out I think that would be a great end to the IB part of the trip.

I know I'm kind of late on the Iron Butt ride thread

Not quite so Flynuly. I've been off badweb for the past few days, so I get the award for being late to the party.

I'm up for it, but the Jan/Feb timing might be too tight for what I have in my warped little mind... An Iron Butt ride to Homecoming sounds like it would be an awesome adventure, but my only problem with that is that I usually head for home the Saturday before Homecoming starts (a free place to stay @ the parents & hanging out with my old friends speak volumes to me), which for 2008 would be June 28th. Since July 7th is my Dads birthday I will probably give him his birthday card in person just before I head back to NC.

It's a good thing that I got back up to 3 weeks of vacation a year this year as next year will be a doozie. I'm contemplating going back to Germany (on my dime this time) for the 2008 BORG MSM - this time near Frankfurt, but will definitely be doing Homecoming (it should go without saying) and Harley's 105th (again a free place to stay and hanging out with old friends really twisted my arm), as well as the Smokeout. With each trip back to Wisconsin taking 6-7 days of vacation time, it would work best for an Iron Butt ride to be incorporated into something I've already got planned. But then again, maybe that's why I am also given sick days...

An Iron Butt ride to Homecoming

It might work better, both from a scheduling and a mental standpoint, to do an Iron Butt ride back from Homecoming.

eitherway, but that makes more sense also!

Something else to consider, how about a ride down I-95 to I-10 west. My father lives in Houston. The next day we could head up to the Texas hill country and see catch some great riding.
