When I get back from MI I'm going to be asking the IT guy to download the software and install it on my laptop...once I get the cable in I'll try data logging with my laptop as well.

At least it will be nice to have another portable computer to work on the bikes with.

Question...why can't my bike be put on a dyno? Other than me not wanting to spend the money if we are working on the technology to do it ourselves?

All the crap talk on BadWeb about buying vs. making your own is only driving me to do more on our own!

Here y'go. The executable is still called "ECMSPY.exe," even though it's the new version.

Hey Scotty or Eric,
I might figure it out before you post...
I have made the appropriate changes to my laptop settings so it keeps running and even resorted to blocking it slightly open to be sure, but no go.

That is I get about 30 seconds of data and that is it.

I've had 3 20 minutes runs and haven't logged anything worthwhile. : [

What have I missed?

That is what I thought the 1st time, but now I am confident it happens soon after leaving the lid closed.
when I am done and open the computer up with the bike still running, the window for ECM SPY is empty (white) and I have to delete the program to stop it.
Here are the settings I thought would work.
It is my work laptop and they do have it set, unchangeably, to log you out after 15 minutes of non use, but I am not getting anything close to 15 minutes of recording.
Also, using a terminal link and RS232 I record data from a piece of our equipment at work.
That data collection continues even if it logs me out, so I don't know why the USB port is shutting down.
Here are the settings, what am I missing?

I think I'm in the same boat as you, Scott. I'm also using my work laptop (IBM ThinkPad) and I've never had a successful on-road logging session. I can log fine idling on the kickstand, but once I hit the road it goes tits-up on me. JP had an electrical dude at his office check my connections, but no dice.

Are you carrying the laptop in a backpack or bike-mounted bag? The shock the laptop is subjected to on the bike could be the problem. Use a backpack. I'm going to try to get my act together and log my ride in with a backpack tomorrow. We'll see.

Meanwhile, I've got a Palm cable coming... hope that works out!!

I tried a backpack 1st, but thought maybe it was coming unplugged when I got on the bike, so I strapped my backpack to the seat. No change.....
My IT guy gave me something to check. I'll let you know if I figure it out.

I just tried it again this morning, this time with a backpack. I have officially thrown in the proverbial towel on laptop datalogging, at least with my laptop. JP, however, has had success with his so maybe he and I can take a ride this weekend. I'm also waiting for a dude in VA to build me a cable for the Palm.

I've got to get this BS figgered out: I've already purchased a standalone wideband O2 $ensor.

Mine is...Latitude D600.

I might be able to ride on Monday...I'm heading to my parents for the weekend. Dad had surgery on his hand and they need help getting some work done around the house since he is basically down to only one operational hand for the next couple months.

Mine is a Latitude D620 and it will not continue datalogging once the lid is shut.
The switch for the lid appears to be in the hinges as I cannot find it.
So I think I am going to cut a piece of foam and strap it to the top of my gas tank with the screen open.

Why not? I had my last company computer stolen in San Francisco and they got over it.
As long as I back up my personal pictures (this time) all is good!

Scott, try going to "Power Schemes" and setting it to "always on", then changing all the timers to never. Also disable the screensaver for the hell of it. If that doesn’t work, I can borrow a D620 from work to experiment on.

I tried that with the power schemes and the computer does stay on, but the monitor still shuts off when closed and that is what seems to be creating the issue Froggy.

The screensaver is controlled by work to log off and display the windows screensaver after 15 minutes. I cannot control this, but would be happy if I got 15 minutes of data!

Even if you got your 15 minutes, the datalog is valid ONLY if you are able to terminate the session in Spy before you lose the connection. There's an extra lesson here: don't kill your engine before you stop the logging session.

And can't you log in as admin with no password? I mean, if you're out in east bumf@#k and the 'puter goes tits-up, what recourse would you have?

I haven't been killing the engine.
I assumed it would be better to manually stop the session, but valid or not, I don't think that is causing me to lose all the data after I close the lid.
I will try a short session and see if it likes that better, but I still see myself riding with the laptop open.....

Riding a motorcycle is hazardous enough Scott, but riding while surfing pron is just ridiculous!

It's not the looking down that is the problem - it is the riding with one hand!

the way windows handles usb on/off is strange ... try the settings like you were using it for tv output or a projector... just a thought
