LOTS of Ulys attended. My son is on fall break, and I also hope to see the cowboys get their butt's kicked for the first time this season. We're up to 9 confirmed now; Jeff Myrick will be there on his X-1. I posted in the C3 and 3% forums to invite our NC and GA brethren. I have family down there and may be able to come down tomorrow night. Although if I started about 6 Sun morn I would be fine too. I'll have to check with the wife and see what shes got planned for me to do this weekend and if I can steal away I will. I'd love to ride down there some. I know the area pretty well but haven't been up to the area your talking about. Here's a low-detail map of Francis Marion National Forest: You can find the complete network of roads by zooming up on Google or Mapquest, but both of them for some odd reason show only about 1/4 of the area above as being inside the national forest. The only way I could get a detailed map of the area was to piece one together from Google map images (the Park Service hasn't reprinted any FM maps in several years evidently). I've pretty much been gone this entire summer and just got back from a seminar at Sunset Beach yesterday. Rode to it on a 2007 R1200S I just picked up. Still have the HP2 as well. It was setup for 2up riding and it about beat me to death, I didn't get home till 6pm. It felt like my brain was bruised. I didn't think about it until shortly after you peeled off on highway 45, but the Columbia guys could have gone with you too instead of going down to Moncks Corner and then taking highway 6 towards Columbia. I looked at it on Google maps last night though and it looks like it was 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. You went around one side of the lake and they went around the other. Nick went right past Francis Marion's gravesite, which is a nice little ~1 mile side trip off 45. The national forest we rode through yesterday was named for him. General Marion was a hero of the Revolutionary War; something like 200 towns all across the U.S. are named for him. He introduced the British to gorilla fighting all through the swamps of South Carolina during the war.   Drfudd Posted on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 05:14 pm:        Hugh, I thought the same thing when I got into St Stephens and saw that 52 crossed 45. And then further down I saw 6. It was a nice ride, just lots of bugs, my bike is covered. I saw that grave site on the side of the road. Had a great big tomb stone with some safety rails. I took 45 all the way till the end when I got on 176, if they would have stayed on that it would take them to orangeburg. But I got on 210 to go down to Hwy 78. theres this stretch on 210 thats like 10 miles long, straight and flat. easy to cruise at high speeds for a good short run. Next time we do this (spring time?) I'd like to do it in the upstate somewhere. or like some guys suggested making a ride around Lake Murray.   Hughlysses Posted on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 05:42 pm:        Well, they've already done a Lake Murray cruise back last year which actually took place over two days. I guess we owe the upstate guys a turn at this, plus they have MUCH better roads than we have in the rest of the state. It would also be a lot closer to the 3% guys around Atlanta and several Buellers in NC. Hey, a winter SC Buell meet isn't out of the question by any means... I know up in the foot heals and especially above Greenville it can get almost rather cold in the winter time. But hopefully someone from the upstate here can clue us in on when the riding season ends in the upstate. My wife made a cheap sheepskin pad for my S3 out of a ~$5 sheepskin carwash mit. She split the seam on it and spread it out (which made it just about the right size for a person's rear) and sewed on an elastic strap. Much better than the $40 or $50 they want for a made for the purpose sheepskin. Either one will go a good ways towards making that seat bearable for a long ride.   Guell Posted on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 10:15 pm:        yeah, i have a few options, im still looking at a corbin possibly, but i also have a friend who does upholstry for cars, so he could probably switch the padding out for something more comfortable. Its really not terrible, its just really thin, and thats the biggest problem. I think i could do a day on it, id be sore but i think its doable. Not enough cushion on the bike seat or my seat. I may try the sheepskin wash mit/seat cover trick to see how that works. Maybe put some type of gel pad under it. I'm sure it'd look like hell but if it would help, I could care less. I'm up for a winter-ish ride upstate. I may trailer up there, but I am desperate for some twisties. Jeff   Hughlysses Posted on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 - 09:44 am:        Jeff, the washmit seat pad actually doesn't look too bad; no worse than the store-made variety anyway. Check Walmart and the chain auto parts stores; we found genuine sheepskin ones for less than $10. A gell pad under one would probably work well. Here's a sampling of some of the twisties in the upstate: 276 up to Caesar's Head near the NC border: 178 about 20 miles west of 276: Highway 28 in the very northwest corner of the state (about 50 miles from Greenville): All of these have great twisties, and there are plenty of other good roads nearby just over the NC border. There is still plenty of good riding weather in that part of the state, even in the winter. Keep it in the back of your mind for a future date and we can try and line something up. I'd definitely plan an overnight stay (or two) for that trip.   Guell Posted on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 - 07:35 pm:        Only time that i can think of that doesnt really work for me is arround christmas, ill be back in texas for a week or so.
