 we spent Sunday night in Asheville, and came home today via the Blue Ridge Parkway, an absolutely GLORIOUS day to be up here, cool, clear and stunning. i didn't take many pix this weekend (it's hard to cover ground and also take a lot of docu-shots), but i had to stop this afternoon and get a photo looking back at Grandfather Mountain and the Linn Cove Viaduct. Man... Always a great time in the Ga mountains... Good to see old friends, meet new ones, ride excellent roads... I know I missed meeting some of you guys, but I was being selfish as I don have many twisties down here so I had to get my time in!!! Glad everyone made it out in one piece, although some bikes did get a little mangled... Can't wait to get back for MBV!!!! | ||

Kudos from me too! I couldn't keep up with all you knee draggers but had a great time anyway. Good to meet everyone. Thanks to Brad, Jeremy and Vern for the invite and keeping an eye on me in their rear views! If someone will be kind enough to share the secret of posting pics here, I can share my clandestine shots of Carlos requisitioning the chin spoiler from Etennuly's bike. Actually we are starting to create a few Frankenstein Buells. The chin spoiler on Carlos' bike is mine, I have Etennuly's and he has Carlos'. DOH! | ||

I couldn't take it! Sucker!!!! Worked on me for the first few years, but I'm immune to it now (well kinda!). His buddy at work has an '07 Uly and he was drooling over it this afternoon. It way nice of you to trade farings with him. | ||

Neil, Riding is an inherently dangerous activity. She either accepts it as a component or she doesn't. You went down. It doesn't mean you were doing anything wrong or bad or that you shouldn't be riding. Crap happens. Better BadWeb riders than me have been down recently. I learn from them, gather as many details about the incident as possible, and integrate preventative measures into my riding habits. I've seen you ride. It ain't your skills. You are as proficient and skillful as anyone. It was just your day. March was Carlos' time. Mine was in June last year. The most important thing is that you are ok, nothing is broken, and your (her) bike is repairable. Give everything a few days to cool off before you do anything "rash". It was a pleasure to meet and ride with you. | ||

Ft_bstrd, I'm beginning to think you're not even a bastard. This has to be some kind of false advertising. Neil, I can't think of a single person I know who hasn't low sided at least once, and most of us went to the hospital instead of the camp ground. If you haven't pushed your bike far enough to drop it, you haven't pushed it far enough to enjoy it. Also, I have to say a track day is much safer than a mountain day. You get a nice clean, wide track with no gravel, no opposing traffic, wide run off areas with no cliffs, and an ambulance on stand by. | ||

Nevrenuf - Just remember that any ride you can walk away from is a good ride. I was upset about my Uly going down for as long as it took for me to realize I was not hurt. I was more sore walking up and down that hill than I was from the get off. All smiles, we all done it. It was funny in West Virginia. Wiley and I were running mid-pack because both of us where fresh off spills. After many events where I was front pack, after my get off and his looping is Gixxer, neither of us really cared if we were keeping up. We hook up together and rode the entire time with smiles on our faces, riding at a brisk pace, but not on the verge. This weekend was the same thing. I ran mid pack most of the time. I was not running much over 70mph at any point so I would loose time in the straights. There were several times I had to change lines because of obstacles and traffic, but only got a little spooked once fixating on on-coming traffic in my lane and not my line. With the relaxed pace no issue changing lines and clearing traffic. So heads up and I hope you get the wife's bike back up soon. One thing about Ulywife. She was great after both my spills on the Uly. I think because in both cases I was OK, even though I did hurt my foot and ankle in the first spill. Kristi has had some fender benders in the past, the most memorable was our Mustang convertible. I had just washed it and she wanted to take it out for some errands. I asked her not too, but to no avail, she took off top down and smiles. An hour later she returns with the front end bashed in, never getting more than two miles from the house. She and I have a lot of history (coming on 25years). Both of us have bobbled at one time or another, so not much to get mad at in the grand scheme of things. Our health and well being is the important thing, everything else is just dressing. | ||

Neil - this is gonna be long....gotta set the tone first. I'd driven since 6:00 a.m. with Brankin (1313) towing the S2 and M2 behind us. We had pulled off I-85 and making the last stretch to Suches. It was around 2:00 p.m. at that point. When Carlos called he said the Uly was down a ravine, but that he was fine. He couldn't get the bike out and was in the process of waiting for a tow truck. I'll need to come to Maryville TN and pick him up........my first thought was "F*$K....I haven't even got to Suches and now I have to go to TN". We stopped at T.W.O. and off-loaded the two bikes, got directions to Maryville and went on my way. A few people offered to ride with me, but I figured I was better off on my own. I was very nervous about driving the Suburban and trailer through the Dragon, but it was the most direct route without adding even more time to my driving that day. So a good Aerosmith CD and I made it through without incident. I passed Mikethebike72 and talked with him a minute and he assured me that Carlos was fine. I found the dealership in Maryville and saw the Uly. I still didn't realize just how far down the Uly had traveled down the mountainside. Since Carlos was up and walking, talking and still had all his fingers attached my only thought at that point was load the Uly, buy a new helmet and let's get some ice on all this beer I have in the truck! At that point I started adding up $$ and we were up to $600 and the bike hadn't been "touched". Later at T.W.O. Duc_htr says to me "you're pretty calm about this". My response was, "it's a bike, it can be fixed". My reaction actually surprised me more than anyone else. I can blow at the drop of a hat and was so calm it was probably actually kinda scary to those that really know me. Carlos had the M2 (wrapped in bubble wrap by this point) so his weekend wasn't totally ruined. With all that it took to fix the Uly (time and money) I was probably more tense this time. If something happened right now, the bike would be down until probably next Spring. I have to admit that before leaving for Suches this time, Carlos got the "ride YOUR ride....we can't afford to fix this bike again and you might not be so lucky next time and walk away without any injury". There was probably more drama for Buelltoberfest than in March. Of course since I've started trailering, I had an opinion about his driving and trailering this time as well....imagine that. Carlos also wants to do a track day. They may be "fun", but it's not something I can say "go for it" and be comfortable with. We have 3 children (ages 3, 6 & 12), while I can raise and support them by myself, I don't want to. So for right now I'm hoping that track days are off in the distance. Money and time are dictating right now, so I don't really have to get into that argument. As Carlos said, we have almost 25 years together. We will have been married 18 of those years this weekend. It's sometimes hard to find the balance of fun, affordable and comfort zone for both parties. His comfort on the bike is at a place I don't think mine will ever be. Watching your wife ride with you, Denise with Ferris amazes me. Denise and your wife have the ability and comfort to lean and ride, I don't. I can ride, but the lean and twisties are not within my range of fun, fear takes over. My fear and thoughts of "who will take care of my children", "we can't afford to fix the bike", "what if you get hurt to the point of not being able to work" all seem to go through my head. I know motorcycling is dangerous, but we buy and wear gear, keep the bike maintained and pray that everyone comes home the same way they left the house. I know asking him to stop riding would be selfish on my part. But if his riding style jeopardizes me and/or the children, then he's being the selfish one. He'll have to live with that one. You know as well as I do, after 25 years together the small things in life are just that. Carlos and I had a rough start, mostly being young and me having a jealous streak that would cover the GA mountains. Some people make comments about being 21 again. I'm happy being 41 with the life I have with Carlos. Time has definitely been on our side. As the saying goes, I love him more every day. Check the RAN for my number if your wife wants to talk in person. I'm usually home and if not the voice mail is on. | ||

Thank y'all! so very much! Thanks goes out to GT for such a fine welcome, and of course the great food. Thanks Mimi, for being you, and knowing me well enough to know I'm not ignoring anyone, I'm only half deaf. Thanks to Ann for allowing me to put yet another thing on my plate, and trusting me enough to prove I wouldn't be doing anything resembling work, and also allowing me enough solo time to get totally lost in the hills. Thanks to everyone that helped make this happen with minimal fuss or drama. Thanks to Kristi for being Kristi, and organizing folks enough to come from far and wide, to enjoy the hills. Thanks to everyone I finally got to re-meet, it's nice to finally meet, ride, talk, and party with y'all, finally! Last and not least, thanks to those that only showed up, y'all made it worth while as well. It's hard for me not to become depressed having to come back down to the big city, where the wildlife is replaced with zombie commuters, and the corporate grind replaces the rush of a mid-morning run up Wolf Pen. I wish I was better with names, because I'd like not leave anyone out. So rather than leave anyone out, it was great riding, talking, hanging out, meeting, laughing, and everything we shared. I also learned a few things over the weekend. I learned that Yankees ain't all bad  I learned a new road or two (now if I can only remember where). I learned that BadWeBbers are all round good people with more than just a bike brand in common. I learned that the faster you go with Ann on the back the faster she wants to go. We will do this again! Only difference will be, I'll take more time off. Oct. 3rd, 4th, and 5th 2008 BUELLTOBERFEST II Mark your calenders, and get the time off now. i guess the reason i'm mulling over this is because this is the first time i have been in an accident above 5 mph. i am gonna put this to a close though. i really appreciate yen's putting this into perspective for me cause this is not how i wanted my weekend to go at all but i always say that everything happens for a reason and it's just a matter of figuring out what that reason is. kristi- i'm sure my wife will read this and if she wants to she will. anyhow, everything that glitch said cause he said a mouthful and i'm looking forward to march. | ||

Denise was a good rider when i met her, and over the intervening years she has also become a good passenger. it takes a lot of trust to be on the back with ANYONE, and i appreciate and value her trust. i could NOT ride on the back at speed, i don't care if Erik Buell himself was at the helm. (ok, for Erik i MIGHT make an exception...) anyway, even a parking lot tipover stays in your mind a while, causing questions and doubts, reminding that we're mortal (which ain't a bad lesson to re-learn every now and then). as the days pass it gets easier to put a shunt behind you, and you ALWAYS come out of the process better equipped for the future. as Kristi said so well above, ride YOUR ride, and always leave a little "in the bank," even when it's Wolf Pen Gap or Deals Gap and the corner is lined with photographers and cheerleaders. i can't imagine a life without riding. Neil, time will fix this. The first time I went down hard (a long time ago) it shook me to the core about riding. I came to doubt myself and my riding skills. When the doubt set in I let other people influence how I felt about riding, it made me mentally weak and it took time for the injuries to heal up before I could get back on to see how it made me feel about it. I crashed a dirt bike on a rail road bridge and broke a knee cap and dislocated the other knee and sprained both wrists. Where I stopped I was hanging with half of my body over the side thirty feet above a shallow fast flowing creek that would have likely killed me if I had slid another foot. As soon as I could kick that TT500 to start it my doubts went away and my life force was back. I was really down for about a month. I wasn't married back then but I had to deal with the wrath of my parents. When I wrecked at the last homecoming at Road America, I cracked six ribs and sprained both ankles. I called my wife of twenty years and she said as long as I was OK she was OK. I was just so glad it wasn't MY bike, because I had to ride it home the next day. It took me eighteen hours to get home (I took many breaks) and she was out on the porch waiting for my arrival. She was very concerned about me, but she understands what riding this Uly means to me. If you would like PM me and she may be able to fill in the gaps as to how she really feels. | ||

The expense of track days is a valid issue. But I experienced *far* less risk on my last track day (novice class) then I did on my last day at Deals Gap. You *could* get yourself seriously hurt at a well run track day... but you would have to work pretty hard to do it. You could get seriously hurt on a mountain road ride... and you have work pretty hard to avoid it. YMMV. | ||
