Does Nuts Pops have easy street on his mind, or what?

Sounds like he earned it.

Thanks Nuts Pops!

Man you suck !
Maybe you can trade one of those monitors for a carb rebuild (Oh snap, you just got served ).

Gonna talk to Nuts when he gets back and see if we can put a tentative date together for the D/S camping trip this Spring. Is there any particular dates that definately won't work for you?

I was cleaning the bike up and checked the odometer. I have got to slow down a little if I expect the bike to last. I've somehow managed to rack up 759 miles this year! At this rate I'll have to buy tires in a couple years .

I sprayed the Roanoke off the bike, but there must still be some in there.

I kicked and kicked, but no pop.
Nuts may have been right...It's time.

Jackie, you might want to worry more about dry-rot.
Oh, that's right!!! all that armour-all should help with that.

Keep the details coming about camping. I'll bring the trailer...

Remember I said there was no "off" position on the petcock??

I was sort-of wrong. It's vacuum operated. Going to go fiddle with it now...

Tank,
Doesn't that petcock have a prime position? My old SRX600 had a prime,on& res.positions.
Pull your line off and hit all the positions and see if any of them flow fuel. If not, see how vacuum it takes to operate the petcock.
You had to start mine on prime at least the first time each day.....Charlie

If its vacuum operated I guess that explains why I could feel air and fuel surges in the gas line instead of a steady stream of fuel.
I don't have any experience wih this type of petcock so perhaps Charlie can tell us what draws the vacuum. May be a good starting point instead of assuming the petcock has gone south.

Jackie,
There is a line running from the petcock to the intake manifold(or should be) this is where it gets the vacuum from.........Charlie
PS.. This is why most that I have seen have a prime position that is gravity feed.

Here's what I got....
A bike that starts a whole lot easier??

First, I drained the float bowl. Found about 10 drops of water in there.(it could have worked in there when I hosed her off yesterday)

Next I pulled the lines off the carb to check the flow. Prime flows very free. No obstructions, and no water. I was able to remove the tank without plugging the line, just by leaving the petcock in the "on" position. No drips! Petcock seems good.

Then I yanked the carb out of there(waaay too easy). Took it apart, and for an old carb, it was pretty clean. But I took the ol' air hose to it anyway and blew through every passage I could find, especially the choke passages.(is this bike supposed to have a Mikuni with a main jet access plug on the bowl???)

Put everything back together CORRECTLY, with all clamps in place and secure.

It seems to run just dandy, and the choke now works on "half", but full still kills it. Putting it on "prime" and kicking through a few times with the comp. release pulled resulted with a 2-kick cold start.

Must have been sucking water in from somewhere(like the un-secured boot).

But, I have to blame the terrible WOT performance on altitude, cause it's fine here.(actually very good...powered the front up about a foot, and got a few inches of air with a very short run-up)

I'll just have to find a big ol' mud hole to test her out.

Oh....and I fixed the fender too. Thanks for the rope Jackie!

p.s. just answered my own question. The main jet access plug is stock.

Tank,
I'd still take it somewhere to have the float adjusted and make sure EVERYTHING is fine. A good investment that will probably only cost around $50.00 and give you piece of mind. Altitude shouldn't have that much affect on the bike so I suspect that it had something to do with the extremely wet weather.
Since Nuts is gone I decided to hit the woods for some squirrel hunting and deer scouting. Little tree rats were out everywhere but was only able to take one due to the thick foliage. I did find a NICE spot for archery season that has been overlooked in the past. Doesn't hurt that I saw a doe and two fawns feed right through without even knowing I was there . Saw two more doe in a spot that will work nicely as a backup should someone (Nuts) want to take over my main spot.
The cooler temps really have brought out the animals and made for a very pleasurable afternoon.

I wouldn't mind taking it somewhere if I could find someone I trusted. Not too many small shops round' these parts.

I had the thing apart today, and I really don't think any part of the whole "float system" is adjustable. It's all plastic, and sammiched' between the carb body and the bowl. Fairly foolproof assembly.

Part of the choke "dip tube" is actually molded into the "float system". It seals to the carb body with an o-ring, and pressure from the whole "sammich" deal. Crazy looking contraption, but like I said, it's all plastic.

Maybe I could hose her down while she idles and see what happens. Turn the idle up a touch and let her have it. All the rubber boots and stuff got the quick eye ball and it all looks pretty good. No cracks or tears that I could find.

Past my bedtime...back to the old grind tomorrow.

Tank,
You may have a small amount of water residing in your gas tank from who knows how long. And occasionally some makes it to the sediment bowl.Check your vent line for the tank as a possible source for water. If you haven't, take the tank off and dump the gas into something and look for water(blow the tank out)
My experience with singles, you should drain the carb. bowl before you try to start the bike if it has set for more than a couple of days.Doesn't sound reasonable, but trust me on this, it makes a difference when trying to start a single.Even in the field, do this before looking at the plug.......Charlie

Thanks Charlie.

I thought about water in the tank, but I drained a pint or so into a coffee can and no water. I didn't shake up the tank though. It doesn't have a vent line. the cap is vented like a street bike(hmmm?)

How does the gas get from one side of the tank to the other??(besides laying it on it's side Nuts style) Will the bouncing around from riding do it?

Tank,
Usually there is a rubber cross-over line, most times near the front.
You really need to take the tank off, to make sure there is no more water.
Almost all singles that you have to kick start have their own idiosyncrasies. And it's just trial an error till you find it.But don't forget to drain the bowl, I'm not pulling your leg, it works.....Charlie

I did take the tank off...

No lines. But I will again to dump it and check for leftover h20.

p.s...I just threw a cold, out of the garage, start at her....FIRST KICK...put, put, put! I couldn't believe it.

And thanks Charlie for the insight and knowledge you freely bestow on us Greenhorns.

That is the best kind.

Thanks again, and I hope I can pass the "roadside knowledge" on to another one day(not so distant future).

Nuts,
I have to give accolades to your wife as well.

I sure look like a junkie that rolled in to take advantage of...

Nuff of that.
That woman must be bred from the strongest around to deal with your constant shenanigans, and upside down purchases. And cute too.

Where do they breed that type of strength into the women...I need to know.

I guess it was too early for the "hoods" to get out of bed. Just moms and dads at the bus stops.

Did you know that when you join "ThumperTalk", you get an e-coupon for 10% off your entire first order??(good for 30 days)

I ordered a Pingel petcock. $68.70 shipped(normally $80 everywhere else) Very nice quality piece.(and no leaks, yet)

Installed it today. Drained the tank and there was NO water at all. I think I got the problem fixed, but I still need to find a big mudhole to play in.
