My XB9R motor is busted and my dealership says they need to go in the motor and the price is something crazy close to 2 grand.

I just put over 50k on it and Id hate to just have to sell it, im hoping it can be fixed for a reasonable price.

if you guys know anyone in socal who could help me out let me know,

thanks

That's not too far off the mark considering that dealers charge approx $90 an hour for a drop off - ride out engine overhaul. I've shelled out almost twice that for a Big Twin overhaul when it needed crank bearings, pistons, overbore, cam, lifters, etc., but that was an independent shop that's not around now.

What happened to it and do you know what needs repaired?

Bartels' has experienced engine builders, I've heard, if you want to go to a dealer. But you might PM Steve Slaughter for advice. He's more into racing and engine mechanicals than anybody I know.

it just made a poping sound and wont turn over.

I dont like that fact that Cal Harley told me they need 8 hours to figure it out. basically I have to commit to about 895.00 just so they can tell me whats wrong. They said after that i would pay for parts so it almost feels like gambling.

they said they spent 3 hours on it already but if i pick it up they would only charge me for two as per the estimate.

Vik,

Call Don Thutt - he does a lot of work on our racebikes. IF he can't do the work (he's extremely busy) - he CAN refer you to an honest guy. You may have met him on one of our rides. He used to be partners with Ernie when they had a British bike shop back in the day and he makes a living now doing restorations.

Problem is that what you're being quoted by Cal isn't that far out of line.

Don't know what kind of spare time you have but you might consider removing the pipes, rotating the motor and pulling off the top ends. If the heads are fried - we can sure make specific recommendations about where to send them for re-build.

When you start tearing it apart, you'll see why it can be pretty expensive to get the diagnosis done. There's a lot of work that MIGHT be needed especially IF there's a problem at the bottom end which would require removing the engine and splitting the cases - feel free to shoot me a PM and I'll give you Don's phone number.

I'm betting that you're better off doing the tear-down yourself if you can find shop space somewhere to do the work. The whole top end is pretty simple to pull off - heads and cylinder barrels.

thanks for all the help slaughter,

i guess the big issue was i really dont have that kind of dough to pay a dealership, luckily Steve B came through and picked up the bike. me and him doing the labor instead of paying the high cost of a dealership is a real good turn around on luck.

ill definitely keep Don Thutt in mind if me and steveB cant fix it

Gonna be a long story. Bent pushrods, valve/piston hits. We're talking about maybe me buying Victor's leftover parts to use in my racebike rebuild and Vic buying Steve's XB9 Streetbike.

Could be a win-win-win. Vic will still need to test ride Steve's XB to see if it's right for him.

I feel like such a greedy vulture because it's a perfect deal for me!

Hey , Greedy Vulture.....I believe last year you went on one of our bigger rides....the ride through Big Bear to Idylwild??.....Well , this Sunday is that time again!!!!...Will we have the pleasure of your Company??and hopefully some more folks from the Glendale Group?...(Kinda sounds like an Investment firm or something!)This is a long but great ride through some of the BEST that area has to offer. We finish in the Idylwild mountains not all that far from Palomar , so if its early enough I will be headed that way for some final 'Throttle twisting pleasure'!!

By the way....did you'all receive an e-mail from Buell about giving away an "Inside Pass" trip to someone? We all should be SIGNED UP at the Buell site 'cause they will be doing alot for us in the future , and this is the way they let us know!!
Oh , and the lower set of pictures were "SCAB" taken pictures from the Carbones 1125R release....

I signed Sunny and me the first day the tix were available about 3 months ago!

I tried going online yesterday to do the free tix thing but they were having website problems - thanks for reminding me, I'll try it again.

This weekend, we're going scuba diving off Refugio Beach and Friday/Saturday we're finishing the carb rebuilding on Sunny's VF500... so we're stuck away from riding the way it looks. MIGHT be done on Friday but we're not even getting the parts in UPS til today or tomorrow.

We're doing inside pass at Willow Springs 17th October. Sunny and I got reservations. Gonna be fun. Still won't have my own bike un-crashed yet. I need a new motorcycle except engine internals. I'm amazed at how wrecked a bike can get when it tumbles end-over-end starting about 130MPH!
