Is it Legal? I've never been one to practice it but, now owning an air cooled bike the thought of splitting lanes in a slow and controlled manner seems a little more appetizing.

It is not legal anywhere except California.

Don't worry about the bike. It will shut itself down if it gets too hot.

According to the AMA website - It is not legal or illegal. There is no specific law in NC about Lane splitting. One of the guys in Charlotte tried and got pulled over by a trooper, but did not give him a ticket. So I would not suggest it. Lane Sharing is legal with another motorcycle - meaning two cycles can ride side by side. That is not legal in all states either.

I doubt that I would have the balls to do it anyway... Especially, before my NC licence test! I'm waiting on a new SS card... mine is Laminated and that, down here is a big NO,NO. Funny, in NY, they really didn't give a rats tail...

I split all the time and I've never had any issues in/around Charlotte. I can't say the same for Jim's neighborhood -- I've been pulled 3 times on I-40 between the mall and Creekstone drive. Those guys, and the one chick, have no sense of humor.

I've asked three different troopers in and around the Mooresville area, and all three said emphatically that lane splitting was illegal. Sucks! I've done it a few times on the I77 parking lot when heading home from Charlotte, but after talking to the various officers, I guess I'll hold off on the lane splitting for a while.

One especially aggravating evening, I was hot and mad, and parked on I77 Northbound, when I decided I couldn't take it anymore and started VERY slowly slipping through the middle very carefully. Some guy decided he didn't much like me doing it and quickly jerked in front to block the middle line. So I calmly pulled behind him. Then for the next 5 miles or so, whenever I had a hole to change lanes and pass, he would purposefully block me. I was trying to stay calm, but eventually got so pissed that I faked him from the right lane to the left, then wheelied passed him in the right shoulder. Good thing I don't have a CCW license.

Hey everyone. : ) Lane splitting in NC is illegal. The only place where it is legal is California.

Let me clarify. A lot of the laws, that don't specifically mention lane splitting state it in another way. Two bikes can share a lane, but a bike and car/truck, etc, cannot share a lane, therefore it is illegal. If you look at the way the law is written, there is no such thing as "lane splitting", just lane sharing. : )
