Nuts & Jackie, You need to go to the XBoard section and read the piece on "Dynamic Timing the Uly". I thought it was very interesting and might explain a lot of the PINGING on the Uly..........Charlie |

Much fun was had today by the dynamic duo. We decided to hit Poor Mountain since Nuts had already hit Wildlife Rd. earlier in the day. Here is Nuts standing behind his steed as we took our first break (notice they are clean). } As we road around we stumbled upon a little puddle that begged to be made muddy. Nuts and I happily obliged and proceeded to give it a thorough beating. Here's a couple of shots of Nuts plowing through. On the main trail we found another puddle. Tank, Believe or not these two pics are of me! After goofing off for a spell we hit the little store at the top of Bent Mountain for a pinch of snuff and a delicious creamy Root Beer. In the picture I am actually leaning on Nuts' bike. If you look closely you will see MY bike is dirtier than his!! No wrecks, both bikes worked as they should and good company. A fine day for sure. Charlie, I read over the post and it makes a bit of sense. Still stinks that people are having these problems and are having to come up with their own solutions. I think with the problems Nuts has had he would be better served getting a refund. They did put in new rings but from what I understand they did not do anything to the lower end. No telling what the inside of that thing looks like after over 10,000 miles pinging. (Message edited by luvthemtorts on May 06, 2007) |

Jackie, How do I tell which bike is Nut's? Their both up right. It's good to see you guys having fun. I have forgotten, what size are the honda's?Does snuff and rootbeer really go good together?I'll have to take your word for it...Charlie |

Jackie, Just read the last statement,I don't disagree with you. I just don't see that happening without some kind of intervention. A new motor would be nice. And then I would take it on myself to see that it didn't ping anymore....Charlie |

Charlie, Snuff and Root Beer go together like milk and Oreo cookies. Course' come to think of it snuff and a Ginger Ale is a purty darn good combination too. Both bikes are the Honda XR650L. I took the smog stuff of mine, rejetted the carb with a Dynojet kit, filed off the tab on the fuel screw and removed the snorkel. The previous owner added a 14/48 sprocket combo so with all the mods I can easily make the rear end dance in dirt or gravel and the Dunlop 606's hook back up pretty predictably. I believe I am going to have to break down and get one of those gel pads for my rear though since the vibration and jarring absolutely tear my back up. |

The Uly timing thread is being guided by Davo who is extremely knowledgeable regarding the Uly's characteristics. Alas, he sold his Uly several months ago because he could not deal with an imperfect bike. Sound familiar? If this dynamic timing sounds like the solution why is Davo without a Buell? NUTS. Nuts, Can't comment on Davo's reasons(since I don't know him). There are many reasons a person might bail: 1.Damage already done 2.Poor relationship with dealer 3. Had his eye on something else.4. Reasons non-related to the problem. My opinion is with that motor(1200 w/thunderstorm heads& buell ignition curve). You can't build that kind of motor(power) and please the EPA at the same time. There are rules that Buell has to follow that you don't(depending on what state you live in) This is just my opinion and I could be all wet.Charlie |

Charlie, I absolutely agree. I do not feel that the bike should have to be modified from stock to be "without ping." If Buell cannot guarantee (through warantee) that a a stock Ulysses will not PING then I do not want one. I will re-state:"The Ulysses is the only streetbike that I feel fits all the needs I have, comfort, power, luggage capacity, room for Mrs.,handling, grin factor" The problem is the motor is a dud and a new bike does not guarantee the PING issue is solved. It has been a bit frustrating and probably will be until resolution, but now I have something to occupy me til we get to the end. I wholeheartedly appreciate all the advice and support from my Buell friends and it will not soon be forgotten.NUTS |

I'll have to run you down a sixer of New River Brewing Pale Ale, for a local taste. However the Sam Adams Black Lager is quite delightful. I have recently found a bartender in Roanoke who knows the proper method of pouring a Guinness. Any time is a good time for a pint o Guinness. I usually order two at a time: the first creamy gulp leaves the glass half empty. So I have a pint and a half to savor. Remind me to tell you about my 10 days in the British Isles with nary a drop of water that hadn't been through Dublin!NUTS |

Jackie, wouldn't take a shot of me pulling a wicked wheelie, so asplash is all you get. Rest assured the big mud puddle was deep enough to cause a shower of water completely covering ole NUTS! I had that ice water flowinf from stem to stern. NUTS PS I get to ride a bike tomorrow with a claimed 103 hp at the crank! |

Isn't your Uly(or any stock 12) supposed to have 103hp "at the crank". OH, wait, I think I get it... (p.s. good luck, mate!) (Message edited by tank_bueller on May 07, 2007) |

I never saw a wicked wheelie. I saw the front end come up about 12 inches but that's about it . Go ahead and talk about your tiny ole' puddle. Just a little water and a rock bottom. Mine on the other hand was deep mud on the bottom and took mad skills to keep it going and produce the awesome rooster tail that occured just a few frames later. I didn't get a picture of this neat little technical trail we hit but it was quite fun. relatively deep ruts and large exposed rocks mixed with loose stones the size of tennis balls. Ole Nuts handled it like a seasoned pro. I think he did have one scare on an old logging road in Franklin Co. but I'll let him tell the tale on that one if he so chooses. I just found out about it today myself course' I wondered what was taking him so long to get to the top . Remember Nuts, trees are slow to move out of your way! |

Nuts, Jackie, Whats the status on the little Yamaha(also forgot the size) Is it still in the shop? What kind of fate is in-store for it? Inquiring minds want to know............Charlie |

I think he traded it on "Scarlett". Talk of wheelies needs me to get a bike to practice on. Can't tear up "my ladies" learnin' to wheelie. Tried on the pedal bike as a kid, but nobody ever told me about the rear brake deal. |

Charlie, The Xt is still in the shop. It appears the circlip came off of the cam chain tensioner and found itself a new home stuck to the magneto. I never would have thought of that one although I did suspect something wasn't right with the tensioner itself. I believe the parts will be in tomorrow to fix her up and then I imagine she'll probably be hitting the Adventure Riders classifieds (although this is speculation on my part). I can't imagine Nuts being happy tooling around on the 225cc after a day spent with the Big Red Pig . |

Tank, if he traded for THAThe made one sweet deal. But it might cost him in the long run(looks very high maintenance) Jackie, All depends on where you ride it. On the really rough stuff and tight quarters that ones a winner. And if you have to drag it back up the cliff, give me the little one.....Charlie |

If the Yamaha is running good by this afternoon it will be next in line for: Seat re-cover and fuel tank seal and paint. After that it'll get the polish and sell. Although it is paid for it just doesn't offer the stump pulling oomph of Scarlett. I might consider keeping it around for one of my brothers but otherwise would like to see it go to a good home. Seth, ya hear me? I'd like to get out of it what I've got in, so no $$$ profit. I dig the idea of that bike, I think I'll like it even more once it's finished!NUTS |

I must say the Ulysses pulls like a freight train......when it's cold! Whew, I was hootin and hollerin in my helmet with the accelleration of that thing. I had to seriously re-consider my choice of asking for the $$$. In the end the bike did PING enough for the rep to hear it. It wasn't pinging like crazy but it was only about 62 degrees when we set off on the ride. After idling in the parking lot for about 10 minutes it pinged as soon as we got out on the main road. I'm surprised the rep could hear it over the loud exhaust she was sporting on her big twin. The dealership and the rep were very interested in resolving the issue. I have seen nothing but excellence from my Buell ownership experience(Ping aside.) I am sticking to my guns with the thought that I can always buy another Ulysses if the 07's prove to be free of this issue. Right now I need to bide my time until we meet a resolution. Thanks for all the advice, help, support, criticism, etc I have received from you all. Damn does that thing pull though! NUTS |

Charlie, After having the rep follow him around on a Harley I think he is leaning towards a chromed out Fatboy I'm now trying to talk him into an old Norton Commando. That way when he gets tired of it I can swoop in like a vulture and pick it up at a smokin' price . |

Jackie, There are SO many one liners I can use, but I think I will just join you. The Norton would definitely get him killed. Between the rev. shift and the handling that he's not use to. Not to mention the maintenance factor. Now that I think of it, he might be safer on the Fatboy since he will be pretty much stuck to the interstate for travel. And of course he will need a good "Auto Club" to come pick it up for him when he stops for a pee break...........Charlie |

Charlie, The crack about the pee break was hilarious. The sad thing is it's true BWAHAHAHAHA! O.K., I am now laying off of Ole' Nuts until after the weekend cause I am depending on him as my backup for the Wildlife Rd. run on Saturday. Never fear though, I will pick up my regularly scheduled jabs at his expense on Monday . |
