Hey guys, would someone lay out the ride route for the May 18-20 Lake City, CO ride coming up, along with some details about accomodations, when we meet in Santa Fe and with the Colorado Thunder Club. Also the ride route for the June 15-17 Gateway, CO ride. Thanks. |

Route/Plan: I hadn't heard that anyone else was going to go. I'm planning on leaving here about 7am or a little earlier.
I was going to ride up 285 to Alamosa, then get on 17 and take that straight into Salida CO. mapquest says it take about 4 hours to get there with that route (~222 miles). The group from devner is going to meet me there for lunch at the Windmill resturant at about 12, but that is what they said last year and it ended up being more like 1 pm.
Below is the email from Dave K. he is leading the ride.
Hello All, I need to spread the news of some changes and updates in relation to this years Lake City weekend. There will be some route and starting time changes, nothing drastic, but something different from previous years. Firstly, we will meet Saturday morning, the 19th, about 7:30-7:45 That way we can leave about 8:00am. This is to meet up with Kim &Cheryl in Fairplay at a reasonable time.( more on this later) Again, lets be sure to have those fuel tanks filled and be ready to ride. Secondly, our trip routing will change to this route here: South on Hwy 285 to Fairplay. Meet up with Kim &Cheryl here and gas up. South on Hwy 9 through Hartsel to intersection with Hwy 50. West on Hwy 50 to Salida for lunch and gas again. From Salida, continue west over Monarch Pass to intersection with Hwy 114 ( just past Doyleville&Parlin) At this turning point , I`d like to get everyone together and organize it so we can run to the end of the canyon one bike at a time,and then at the end of the canyon ,turn around and do it again. That way we`ll have no worries about oncoming traffic, as the road is pretty tight and narrow. After we get back onto Hwy 50, we`ll ride the remaining 10 miles or so to Gunnison for a gas stop and break. After filling up on gas & goodies, we`ll head west on Hwy 50 toward Blue Mesa Reservoir and the intersection of Hwy 149. We`ll then turn south on Hwy 149 for the scenic and fun road to Lake City. Our Sunday plans remain the same as previous years, South on 149 over Slumgullion Pass to Creede, Wagon Wheel Gap and South Fork. We`ll stop for gas and a break in South Fork. Then, on to Del Norte, where we`ll turn north on Hwy112 to catch Hwy285 at Center. We`ll then ride Hwy285 to Saguache and over Poncha Pass to Salida again for a late lunch. Over lunch we`ll discuss our preferrred route home. This always gets talked over and is dependent on time, weather and traffic concerns. I would also like all the participants of this ride to call or e-mail me so we can get an accurate idea of who`s going, and so we can exchange cell #`s and all that. Kim,
First, Dave's message makes it sound like he intends to meet you in Fairplay, which is only an hour and a half out of Littleton. With them leaving at 0800, you're looking at a 0930 rendevous. If, on the other hand, they do meet you in Salida, it's only a little over two and a half hours for them, so puts them in at 1030-1100. Google says it'll take over four and a half hours to get to Salida from Santa Fe, so even without stopping, you're looking at 1130 at the earliest. And I know from experience that riding straight through from Santa Fe to Salida is a long ride without stretching your legs. |

Nope, I'm not the Kim in the message, that is someone else. I'm meeting them in Salida. Ya, is will be a long run, but I will stop at least once on the way up. That is why I was thinking of leaving before 7. I've done 5 hours with only 2 gas stops. This bike is far more comfy.
Come on CJ you know how it works with groups. Do we ever leave on time? They are thinking that they'll hit Salida at 12, I'm willing to bet they don't make it until 1 again. They were an hour late last time and that was with 5 riders, this time there is 10.

Oh. Well that's different.
Keep in mind, it appears that you'll have Warren riding up too, so he may not be able to go as far on a tank.
I really wish I could go. Not for the literal pain in the ass that the trip up and/or back represents, but rather for the fun in between.
I took my bike in for service on Saturday. I was way overdue and also needed a tire. I got up there around 10 or 1030 and talked to Josh. I'm thinking that I'll drop it off and then whenever they get to it they get to it and I'll just pick it up next week or something. He tells me it'll be ready at 4:30. I'm like, "Today?" and he's like, "Yup. Today." WOW. That was fast. They did the whole service in like six hours or less. Must've been a slow day at the shop.
The only down sides were: the guy who washes the bikes power washed the Firebolt logo right off the front fairing; and it cost $700. I'm still in shock over the price. And my wife now has even more ammunition to curse my expensive hobbies. |

Ya, I wish that more people from around here wanted or could do the trip. It make the ride there and back more fun.
I haven't heard from Warren so I don't know if he wants to ride up with me. I really won't have to stop for gas, my new bike will make it up there on the one tank of gas.  Dang, it is nice to have that extra range, without worrying about looking for gas.
The guys, at the shop are great. They've always gotten mine back to me quickly.
Hey, if they messed up the bike, shouldn't they replace it? And, $700 seems like way too much money. |
