Not sure I believe it either.....

Maybe Nuts is so used to seeing his Uly on the ground, he does it like us kids used to do with bicycles. Ride up to "the spot" and just dump it on the ground on purpose.

Who needs a kickstand, anyway???

Nuts, it's a good thing you are a good sport. If I were you, I would ride around looking for spots with scenery to stage a dropped bike, and post it all over badweb.

It would be the the most visited "Stories" thread ever(next to Ferris's, of course).

Maybe you could talk Glitch into doing some photoshopping for ya. I hear he's pretty good at it.

NUTS' SOLO RIDE TO MARCH BADNESS

So I get a decent 6 hours of sleep Thursday night for a 7am departure Friday. Arose to chillish temperatures but the road is long and I'm gone. Twenty miles in I find my fingers in agonizing pain with no sign of relief; a pit stop in Floyd is due. Frost everywhere reassures me the only option is a bacon biscuit, cuppa joe and time. I have my GPS loaded with the waypoints to assure the most twisted route possible to T.W.O in Suches, GA. Time to make time. I take 221 over to 58 and get heading for the VA/NC line. Arrival in Damascus requires fuel and a stop at a camping store to procure a stove and fuel for said implement. I also attempted to get directions because my route, although waypointed was not routed. That meant the GPS was attempting to send me and the Uly the long way to the HIGHWAY! Ulysses+Highway+NUTS does not equal smiles. I ended up heading toward Shady Valley on a hunch and luck was shining down on us. We ripped through Cherokee National Park in NC and got further South. At this point the lady in the NC border welcome center directed me to the highway which was appearing inevitable. I refueled the belly and jumped on the slab determined to make T.W.O that day. Once I hit I40 outside of Asheville only Route 19 stood between me and Route 129. Some of you know Route 129 leads north to Deals Gap and South towards Suches. A couple more gas stops and I was knocking on the door of my destination. I ran Route 180, also known as Wolf Pen Gap right into Highway 60 where T.W.O lies. Pulling into the gas station I saw a black Uly and several other Buell's. I met Glitch and Sanchez of the famed 3%ers in the lot and got directions to the campground: it was about 75 yards away, whatta boob! Parked my Uly in a solitary spot amongs a gaggle of Buells and went to work setting up camp. After setting up the site I went to meet my neighbors up on the hill. Two XB12Ss's a VFR and a K1200GT were parked up and their owners were enjoying a frosty beverage. The fire was roasting and my new neighbors introduced themselves while offering one of those fine beverages. These fellows had ridden down from Maryland in the rain on Thursday. Cool cats one and all, especially Mike, the dude who was too wasted to crawl into his tent the last night. The food at T.W.O is first rate but requires patience as it'll be over an hour before you get to use your utensils for their intended purpose. Time flies when your talking motorbikes and listening to others pick at each other. I swear we were about 3 seconds away from a neegie at all times. Saturday morning brought clear skies and a blossoming crop of Buells. I went for a stroll along the concours and ran into Tom(Warbaby) who I met last year at The Dragon. Tom is a real motorcyclist who knows how to enjoy life. All the talking about bikes produced an unhealthy desire to ride; so I did. I looped Route 60 to 10 to 129 to 180 back to T.W.O. It took about an hour and I was able to enjoy the ride nearly traffic free. The roads down there are ridiculously good. I hate to say better than here but it is the truth. Wide, clean, fast and fun. I returned to meet several other Badwebbers and replenish the emty stomach. A ride was heading out with the C3 crew and I bummed a spot towards the tail. An enjoyable ride was had and I returned unscathed and unintimidated. Those guys could ride but never pulled me into the foolishness I am so easily drawn to. I realized early on I was all alone and no one was going to get NUTS home but NUTS. I rode easy all weekend and amazingly kept the bike upright for all four days. Saturday afternoon I made a solo pilgrimmage to Blairsville, GA to get some more water and food, returning before dark. Another dinner session was enjoyed and headed over to the Maryland firepit. Good company was given and received until the fire was turned under and quiet ensued. Well, it was interrupted several times by someon cranking up a Buell, revving the snot out of it and shutting it back down. I dunno what for but it made me laugh. Rain was heading my way Sunday and there seemed to be no way out of it. I packed early and loaded the Uly before the rains came. A cup or two of coffe was had to stem the chill before accepting the inevitable. Locked, loaded and ready to roll; I departed about 10 am heading for Traphill, NC where I thought would be halfway home and a safe harbor at a family friends home. At the first gas stop I ran into Mikethebike72 on of the C3er's I rode with Saturday. Mike's bike would not start after refueling and after a 10 minute diagnosis we found a blown relay. I pulled the accessory relay from the Uly and offered it to Mike to get him on the road. He gladly accepted, asking what he owed. A see you next year was all I could ask and got heading north. I replaced the relay in Blairsville at an Autozone, thus reuniting me with my heated grips. I rode 19 all the way through to Cheroke, NC and swung into the "Wheels through time museum." My buddies from Maryland mentioned stopping there on the way home and I caught them re-mounting their bikes. Smiles all around indeed. A farewell was bid and I hit the road again. I had been to Cherokee as a kid with my family, so seeing it as a man was pretty neat. All those familiar sights brought back a flood of memories I won't soon forget. I hopped on the slab to get me to Asheville bound for a 100 mile date with the Blue Ridge Parkway. I was looking forward to riding up Mount Mitchell State Park even in the rain and fog but it was not to be. The Parkway was closed 29 miles north of Asheville for who knows what. Fortunately they tell you that 29 miles before it closes, so you can make the u-turn and follow their detour. Of course the detour is along the highway, exposing you to all the degenerates in their four wheeled distraction wagons. After about 40 miles of detour I was returned to that illustrious road I enjoy so much. Fog, rain, wind, limited visibility and low fuel would be the story of the rest of the day. I was fortunate enought to fall in behind two Rangers and a city sheriff with tailights bright enough to see more than 20 feet. As the elevation decreased and visibility grew they were nice enough to tolerate me speeding along with them. When they pulled off I threw up a wave and motored on back into the fog. My low fuel light usually shows up somewhere in the 150 mile area and this had me pretty freaked. I was no where near fuel and approaching 140 miles when I decided to start coasting downhill. It worked because my fuel light went on at 182 miles the next day. That night I was greeted by my friends and given a place at their dinner table along with a much deserved malt beverage. My host Marty looked at my haggard state and said, " I know, I've had those days on motorbikes." All I could offer was a smile and it seemed to be enough. I got to hear the story of my brothers sitting at that very table and eating 10 pounds of potatoes. By now I was de-stressed enough to enjoy the conversation and join my host in colorful banter. I made it until just after midnight before sleep could not be held at bay any longer. A morning cup of coffee helped me pack my things and I killed another couple of hours waiting for the residulal fog to burn off. Heading out I found a truly fantastic road that led me to fuel and a bite. On the road with an ETA of 2:00. I took the BRP all the way to Roanoke enjoying the curves amidst all that scenery. Thats it, all wrapped up neatly in my incandescent, horrifically ungrammattical style. I'll get the few pics I have up this weekend sometime, they're crappy 1 megapixel anyways so your not missing much. NUTS

Nuts,
Glad to hear you and the Uly are clicking along again. Sounded like an awesome trip. Probably not that much as the crow flies, but that route ought to be worth a mini Iron Butt award in my book.
Hope this is the end of your mechanical woes since none where mentioned.Im sure the Uly is tucked away in your garage for a long needed rest.Snoring away, laying on a stack of U-Haul blankets, old habits are hard to break,LOL.............Charlie

Great report! Glad you had a good time. Wish I was there. Need a vacation, Bad.

Haven't worked on the bike this week, because I need parts. First order from Andy, and it's a fairly large, and unusual list of random stuff. He seems to be on top of it.

I walked in to work on Tuesday with every intention of asking for a couple days off(without pay, of course), and before I could ask, I got "can you work Saturday".

Lots of cabinets to install; little enthusiasm, and even less gratitude. But there's plenty of blame to go-round when something aint' right. Did I mention that I need a vacation?

Sorry for the vent

Tank

Tank, I hear you loud and clear. I was REALLY needing that trip to March Badness. It was just the ticket to stem the evil employee from invading my soul. I'm off to West Virginia Tomorrow to see some old friends and not taking my Buell is killing me! I've got one more week of work and it'll be Spring Gobbler Turkey season. Me and Torts'll be out there chasing those wiley critters just like last year. Everyone knows I harvested TWO TROPHIES last year. While our friend Jackie witnessed an old, deranged, beardless bird fall out of a clear blue sky. He took it home and claimed it as a kill but I know better. With his new acquisition I am suffering from a little jealousy so I must exorcise the demons. Foe entertainment recently I have been letting Jackie borrow my Dremel. You wouldn't believe the stuff that guy is willing to tackle with it; like watching a kid with fireworks and a big ole box a matches. How long until something goes boom? Not long. NUTS

So Nuts, have you finished all the Venison you harvested this year or do you have any left? My freezer got left open and my last 150lbs had to be tossed out. Can I get some of yours for an upcoming BBQ?

Oh wait a minute. I forgot you DID NOT get a deer this year .

Where you gonna leave the Dremel so I can pick it up tomorrow? I want to take advantage of the crappy weather to touch up those areas so I would GREATLY appreciate it if you would hide it somewhere convenient for me.

By the way, our fishing buddy got 10 years if you know what I mean.

Buy, Buy, Buy!! Even though it is a waste since the Uly is designed for double duty to a certain extent.
I personally think you should just put it on the back burner so we can give it some deep discussion while waiting on trophy #3 to show up.

So where are you gonna put the Dremel? Is there somewhere on the back deck you can stash it?

I'll put it inside a rubbermade container near the garage. I seriously hope to see some dremelfications upon my return. Don't daughter #1's braces need a little tune-up? Maybe you could try etching some Buell logo's in the Escapes windshield? C'mon you have restraint. I saw someone last weekend that had successfully done the heelguard modification that escaped you. Man it looked good, you should try again! NUTS

When I got to the house at the Gap, Nuts, Jim, and Gary gave me a hard time about how clean my bike was. I didn't think it was all THAT clean??(I did wipe the bugs off before I left)

p.s. Wheel swap is on the schedule for tomorrow(and maybe a quick, illegal ride down the road)

Just say "heck with it" and make it a nice long illegal ride down the road. The ticket will cost you the same amount.
I wanna see some step by step pics of your progress as well as progress reports. Since Nuts refuses to buy a dual sport and post pics it will give me something to read and look at.

NUTS spent a good few hours riding the trails of West Virginia Friday. I was wringing that Honda ATV 250x little neck. Doughnuts, wheelies, jumps powerslides, you name it. I had the biggest smile on my face the whole time! I'll have to be in the market for a dirtbike here soon. They let me fire up the 500cc Polaris Predator for a minute too. I revved it up and dumped the clutch into the gnarliest burnout anyone had seen yet. Swung it up onto the street and yanked a wicked wheelie going from 1st to 2nd. Then it was time to park that monster before I ended up testing my health insurance policy. Fellas, they have got miles and miles and woohooo miles of trails over there! The hunt begins....NUTS

Well shit, if it aint one thing, it's one LARGE thing. But nothing I can't handle.

Started on the wheel swap this afternoon.
Pulled the wheels off the S, and the back (villan black) has a pretty good spun bearing. Wheel is toast. The bearing seat looks like somebody beat the bearings out with a sledgehammer....and missed....twice! So the bearing didn't seat properly and bound up on itself.(sonofabithcinhomongrinfukinp.o.s ebay deal)
Was planning to put this set on the "Tankenstien" project to "shake her down".

So I guess I gotta wait for my box from Andy to arrive before I go much farther.
At least I didn't find out about the bearing on the side of the road...or worse.

Jim,
Not related but can definately relate to the fella wanting to keep his machine in pristine shape. It is a sickness man, and I got it BAAAD!!
You guys would get a kick out of Nuts. He will find pieces of lint on the bike and say "Oh dude you got a scratch". Gets me every time. I think the peck gets great enjoyment out of messing with my head .

We gotta figure out a way to remedy the fact that we have never met. Sometime this riding season I would like to meet you and Tank so I can put faces to names. One warning though. Leave the girlfriends or wives at home because I am a right handsome fella' and don't want to cause any hardships for you guys .

Tank,
Stick with it my friend. Eventually you will end up with a jewel (or go completely insane in the process LOL)! I actually envy you for having a project to tinker with. My Honda project consisted of replacing a few pieces of plastic, removing the smog stuff, rejetting and adding a skid plate. Lasted all of 4 days and now I have nothing to mess with. Guess I have to actually ride it now .
