Phil, a Micron Waiting Suks! Next time we all go riding it will sound like a freight train coming through town.

Mark, riding a bike with a drummer is way cooler and louder then riding next to one. Oh and a very smooth power delivery as well. Now if I can just get mine I will be a happy camper. The sound is almost like two very throaty bass drums that resonate through you. I can see earplugs being needed for long trips.

Aron, it is good to see you still posting. I was wondering if one more mention of an exhaust pipe would push over the edge. I made the mistake of not asking when my exhaust would arrive but maybe I'm better off not knowing.

Mark, perhaps you may want to listen to my pipe too. The guy I ordered from said the Micron on a VFR sounds like a big block, Al says it sounds like small block Chevy. Either way it is gonna sound good.
IMO you can't do better than a Micron on a 9.

OK - I'm having an Apocalypse Now vision of PDX Buellers riding down Broadway, aftermarket exhausts thundering through the architectural valley, on our way to a civilized Starbucks coffee break.

Balls - absolutely, I wanna witness the mighty Micron! It's gained almost mythical status in the aftermath of the exhaust shootout. Very cool hydroformed headers. Had a tough time choosing between Micron and Drummer.

Swede, Disturbed - thanks for description of the Drummer sound. That visceral experience is exactly what I'm shooting for (middle-aged rebellion?)... earplugs are already part of my everyday gear.

The Drummer SS grabbed me with its billet bling and Nascar heritage. Plus, Kevin's supposed match my exhaust to specific motor requirements... but that's another pending project!

Mark

I agree about the Wild Hogs, that movie looks hilarious! If the weather is ok I wanted to get together with a bunch of bikes and line up outside the theater on Saturday. Only bad thing is where to put helmets.

Mark,
Seat is yours, make it up and you can take er for a spin. Sounds good when someone rides by you on it (Which I learned when Aron rode by me) Almost painfully loud on the seat. Ear plugs made a big difference. Power is much much smother. Kevin suggested 3000-3500 RPM the let the ECM learn. I've tried to cruze there and in doing so I believe it removes the dead spot everyone said the drummer had in mid range. I have yet to get on it, but mild rolls of the right wrist produce a pull that was not there stock.

Phil,
I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing the Micron!

Anyone remember the scene from Mad Max where the bikers pull up to the store, and back all the bikes in? Gang leader holds his arm up and then all reve up for 10 or 15 seconds, then he drops his arm and they all kill the bikes at once. Then... dead silence. A little geeky to hold up an arm, but boy that be a sight (sound) in front of Starbucks on 23rd! Portland PoPo would probably pepper spray us before we got off the bikes!

Phil, the Micron makes sense on the XB9 with the higher rev limit. I thought about this pipe as well before settling on a Drummer. On my XB12 the Micron is only favorable from 6400-6800 rpm where my rev limiter kicks.

It will look kick ass on your bike with dual polished outlets. Let me know when you get it on or need any help.

Paul - thanks for the gracious Drummer Test Ride offer... will definitely take you up on it when the weather's better. And that Mad Max scene is forever imbedded in memory, along with Mel's actuation of the V8 car's blower via cable pull attached to Hurst shifter.

My personal quest is for torque - hoping that a Drummer + XB12 crank + 1250 kit will provide the desired grunt... we'll see!

Mark,
Numbers on the dyno chart are not equal to the feel in the seat of the pants, Drummer has a much better feeling torque curve. Looks like Nallin is back on board as a sponsor, he's done some amazing things in the past. PM me for another Non sponsor contact.

Can't do the movies this weekend, sorry I'll be spending time with my wife.

Paul, have you ridden a Buell with a Micron? If yes, was it a 9 or 12. Also, where in the revs did it feel flat compared to your experience on a Drummer equipped bike?

Mark, alot of people like the rev of a 9, but prefer the torque of the 12. If you like how your 9 revs maybe ask about some different cam profiles to gain the torque rather than swapping the crank. I would like to up my displacement also but the short revs of a long stroke do not appeal to me so I'm just trying to think of different ways to achieve a higher reving unicycle.

Now why they didn't make the XB12 rev like the street Rod, 8800 rpm. That would have been nice.

I've allready thought about how to use the servo acuator to triger a shot of N2O...

Small cylinder could be made to fit there as well... NOt entirely sure I'd want it automatic though, imagine leaning hard into a turn and having it kick in as you did a gentle roll on...

Like the way you guys think!

I've got a life-long objective to either (turbo)supercharge something, or at least do some motor hop-ups, you know - 60s hot rod Rat Fink style. Too much fiddling with the blower project, so it's "all motor" for me... but nitrous is a nice thought.

For you XB12-ers: how's my bike going to (mis)behave when stroked, bored, and equipped with original XB9 primary, 10.5% shorter ratio than XB12? Wheelie machine, or just effective tire burner? Either is OK with me.

Mark, I have thought about putting a primary 9 chain and sprocket on my bike for some time. My biggest concern has been how it would do on longer freeway type trips. Instead of a cruising rpm of 3K I would be closer to 3.8K. my top speed would be reduced to around 115 mph. Which would make an awesome bike for city use city use and commuting. First gear also hits the limiter so fast as it is that with a 9 primary I would probably have to run a shift light just to make sure I am not missing it.

As far as wheeling or wheel spin will depend on the rider and clutch hand. I am 230 lbs maybe 245-250 with full gear. I have not been able to pull wheelies with throttle alone. I would most likely have to use clutch or sit all the way back on the seat where the passenger would sit. I have not tried this because I am to chicken to overdo it and wreck my bike. this is also another reason I have thought of the 9 primary, wondering if it would gently lift the front form throttle alone.

Swede, comments appreciated!

Your rationale for the shorter primary ratio fits perfectly with my intended XB use: shorter rides, grocery-getting, mountain road rumbling, middle-aged rebellion.

The stated limitations of the shorter ratio can be dealt with:

(1) I'm at least 250lb+gear+lunch, so increased mechanical advantage and motor output should help move my lard mass down the road.

(2) Throttle-up wheelies will simply have to be investigated... in the name of science, of course. Same with 1st gear red line.

(3) My XB's strictly for day trippin' - for road trips, wife & I each ride sedate R1150R Beemers, complete with Old Man hard luggage, e-gizmos, and Aerostich. Great bikes for long haul, easy to work on, same bikes minimizes spares. And thankfuly no problems yet with giant beer falling on me due to His & Hers cutesy effect.

Mark,
Don't forget the Sweed and I are both on Longs... Helps the font wheel stay down a lot. When I ride my buddies tuber (X1) the front wheel comes up easy, not so with the Ss. I've yet to have the 'hunas to put any real effort in to the "one wheel riding stance", but I'm sure it'll do it with minimal effort. I have noticed the front forks are set up with enough preload and rebound dampening that bouncing the front to help get up doesn't do much, and the rear is rock solid, no sag regardless of how hard I whack the throttle.

None the less, I think the standard leingth nine, with the standard gearing and 12 power will come up a lot easier than our Longs. As another data point I did a demo day last year. The 05 City X didn't lift the front wheel while riding somewhat aggressivly. The 05 bolt, however, did so with shocking ease. I'm thinking you'll be on a wheelie machine.

Side note. I had a 1964 Plymouth Valiant with a turbo charged 225 slant six. ran a 12.4 Quarter mile and took V8's off the line every time. Didn't have much top end, but I couldn't drive it when it was wet, it tried to change lanes on the 1-2 shift if it hand any throtle in it at all, and the 2-3 shift could be scary too. Had an aftermarket tuned port injection (Antique now, but cutting edge then, were talking 89') a t04 turbo with an air to air intercooler and was punched .060 open, 2 1/2 inch pipe from the header out. Invested allmost a grand in the head and intake manifold alone. Real sleeper. I miss that car... Still have the 225 in the folks basement, wanna buy it?

Paul - yeah, forgot you guys have XB Longs. Throttle-induced wheelies could be a fun leisure time activity, but there's a downside to a tiny wheelbase/high torque XB Shorty: during my PIR trackday, I experienced regular headshake at the Porsche Bump approach to the back straight (turns 5A-6), and that was stock XB9S configuration, ProTaper bars, big ol' me, throttle WFO.

Bought XBR top triple for trackdays, hoping it will help keep weight on the front wheel... might be mission critical with any bump in engine torque. Steering damper's probably advisable too.

How about a g-machine Dodge Dart Swinger? Drop in that turbocharged 225, install stage3 suspension kit, hang the little evergreen air freshener from the rear view mirror, and it's all "Groovy Baby!"

Well the exhaust swap was easy. About an hour. I also dropped some iridium plugs in and adjusted my primary while I was at it. In all about 2 hrs.

Now the bummer is that the servo emulator I got from Al, I think is wrong. I thought it would plug right into the end of the servo plug-in. But its the wrong connection. So for now I might just have to figure out the home brew option or leave the servo motor on the bike.

A re-flash instead of the Race ECM. Good choice. I think it will work better for you. So did your Micron come in?

If Al gets one done for the SS I might do that as well someday. Currently he has one for the original drummer.

Once I get few 100 miles on my bike I will probably take in to Roc for a Dyno base line. See where I am out fuel and power wise.
