Hey all,

I did about 5 hours of research for the Saturday June 7th ride. I know its grueling work but someone has to do it! :) I rode the northern end of the route that I had planned and decided to scrap that whole section. Average roads, average turns, too much distance between them. The reason I scrapped them is that I went exploring and found a few very, very nice roads just off the southern section of the route I had planned. I found a road (route T) that runs parallel to MO79. It is about half the length of 79 but has good twisties and good pavement. Also rode route O, nice road. Looks as though the route will be spending alot more time from Hannibal to Louisiana and over towards Mark Twain lake area.

This has been a very good venture for me. It is giving me the opportunity to really explore NE Mo for some roads that I think even Bob and John would be proud of!!

...Springfield Mile just to see if that sissy boy Nicky Hayden can keep up with the big dogs! Maybe his Honda contract won't let him do it in the dirt? Hahahahaha

Short Track Saturday evening with the Mile on Sunday.

Hmmm? Buell it up 55 or Duc up the back roads...hmmm?

Hey guys,
Bob and I returned home last night after a nice 3 day ride down to Arkansas. We left late (11am) Friday. Once in Arkansas we rode Push Mountain Road (AR 341). It was almost dark when we reached the end of it so we took it easy and made our way to Marshal via rt.27. Spent the night there at the Sunset Motel. (very old but clean and it had a good air conditioner).
The next morning we took off south on Rt 27 down to Russelville where we tried to get an oil change for Bob's ST1300 at the local Honda shop. No deal, too busy selling four wheelers. We then made our way on to Mount Nebo.
You have to ride the road to the top to believe it. 18 percent incline with 180 degrees, 1st gear switchbacks all the way up. Once on top we had a nice view of the entire area below.
We continued on south on Rt 27 to Rt 10 and then West to Havana. We then headed north on Rt 309 to Mount Magazine.
Again the views were great but could have been better had it not been so cloudy. After getting off the montain we continued on to Paris where we ate before taking the Pig Trail Scenic Byway (Rt 23) north towards Eureka Springs.
About halfway thru the byway it started to rain, hail, and blow like crazy. That lasted for about a half hour, then stoped. When we arrived at the Iron Horse Stables in Eureka Springs all was clear. We spent the night there. Bob found lots of people to talk to. I just sat by the open fire resting and listening to all the B/S. tales each was telling.
The next morning we were off to ride a road that has just recently been paved; a section of Rt 123. This section is just south of Vendor near Mount Judea and continues on south to Pelsor. This is a MUST RIDE if you are ever near the area.
After arriving in Pelsor we took Rt 16 east to Tilly where we got back on Rt 27 and headed north to Push Mountain Road one last time before we had to head home. Bob never saw the snake. It could have bit him.

What he said and also that the entire state of Arkansas smells of honeysuckle this time of the year...Despite the state's namesake, not one sniff of pig poop the entire trip...We stopped and visited with the man who fixed Ron Stone's peg on his beemer after the crash so that he could ride it home in Sept., 2000...Mt Nebo much more impressive than the state's tallest, Mt Magazine...Can't imagine riding Nebo in any kind of weather...The "Beast" ran great...John said it was still pinging just a tad under WFO, uphill, in a snow storm...But he's just a bit anal about that...He can field strip the timing cover in the dark, under water...At Iron Horse Stables, where we stayed Saturday, they have these carved names of various brands and models of motorcycles on their deck and on the end closest to our room was a sign that said "Buell"...Wow!!!...Great trip, lots of nice people and roads and food...We're both dieting...And sleeping...We're beat...

See Ya!

John, & Bob,
Sounds like you guys had a great time. thanks for the recap.

Was this the first long trip on the ST?? What did you think of it? Does it reach expectations? How does it compare to the BMW?

Keith

Uuugghh, my S2 just loves the back roads...but it seems such a shame to waste Pirelli Diablo's droning up and down 55. And, the S2 is very comfortable to ride anywhere--highway or back roads.

The SS does fine on the highway, it just begs to go the long way around...

I just acquired some Cycle Cat riser for the SS to 'facilitate' a more ergonomically friendly riding position. We'll have to see how this works out.

Keith...Yep, first trip on the ST and there are some issues that need to be taken care of...Big issue is my left knee which also bothered me on either Pumpkin or Das Boat...I remember now that on the first NC trip on Das Boat I had to take the padding out of the left knee of the 'Stich...Going to order another front seat and send it out for additional padding and gel and see if that works...We don't want to lower the pegs if we can help it...

The heat issue was not a problem with the 'Stich and shorts underneath but I can see how it would be in jeans...H just provided a fix for this problem on the GL's that makes the engine run cooler so maybe it's in the works for the ST...

Overall, I'd say, H painted a big bulls eye on the RT and hit it big time...It's the engine that really impresses over the RT...Especially at high speed...There is none of the buzz (some call it character) that the RT produced...The power shield works better...The brakes work better...The tranny, well enough said if you've ever lived with a beemer tranny...Sometimes on Das Boat I had to stomp on the shifter to downshift into first...Funny thing is that since getting back into this racket, all the bikes I've had have sported clunky trannies and now this ST is like buttah...Ah, the suspension, and here is where I miss the RT, there really is nothing to compare with that telelever, paralever combo...The good thing is that under hard braking the ST squats at both ends due to the linked brakes...Also, another little BMW nit is that now I can get a helmet into either the top box or side boxes...The beemer would do neither...Isn't that strange?...

I got a chance to test the ST's weather protection in a brief 30 mile but pretty severe storm and it's even superior here to the RT...Raised the screen all the way and hunkered down...John still had his tinted shield on and we did just what we did in WV in that he just followed my tail light out of the storm...When we arrived at Iron Horse Stable and I stripped out of the 'Stich I was completely dry...

The multi-function display is really useful but does miss the "gear selected" function of the RT but this is not a big deal...The fuel functions are tank level, avg MPG now, avg MPG trip and miles remaining when you get down to one bar...The range is easily over 300 miles so it's going to make a great Iron Butt mount...Also it will be great out west where men are men and gas stations are not...In August we planed on carrying spare fuel for John but we may be able to figure a way for him to tank off the ST...I upgraded the head light bulbs to PIAA super white's and these are the best headlight's I've ever had...I understand they're pretty darn good stock...The high's throw down the road great and the best feature is the way the high's light the sides of the road...You can also adjust the headlights up and down with a knob on the dash...Neat when loading and unloading the bike...

You guys know that I had done quite a bit of research into Das Boat's replacement even before the crash anticipating what to do if I was accepted into the IBR as Das Boat was approaching 90K...The FJR continues to win "Bike of the Year" awards and shootouts over the ST and I understand this as the moto press looks pretty much at engine, chassis and suspension and the whole performance envelope...I looked instead at each individual feature and function and, of course, it was that 7 year unlimited miles thingy that really grabbed me (like I'll keep it 7 years!)...But it's the peace of mind of it...Looking at the FJR and ST sitting side by side at Niehaus, the ST just looks more "finished" and integrated...At least to me...

But, I don't think either the FJR or ST will disappoint any owner...That FJR engine just kicks ass...And on this note there is a used (1500m) FJR at Niehaus that the prior owners took one trip on and the wife wanted a GL...A guy demo'd it while I was picking up the ST and came back a looong time later and said he thought it would be faster...I asked him what he was currently riding and he responded "V-Max"...Well, duh?...

See Ya!

Bob,
sounds like you defintely made the right decision on your new scoot, especially considering the type and style of riding that you do.

their "Appreciation Days" this weekend...On Sunday they are giving
away a GL1800 in a drawing at 1500...There is a bike show, karaoke
