Gee, must be nice to be able to go out and play on a warm saturday. I guess I will just have to settle for the 3 days I spent railing around the road course at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on a xb12sTT. What a Bike!

so i spend two hours spiffing the Road King this morning, wanting to make a shiny first impression, and Nance takes us the back way into Burke's Garden.

"Do you mind riding on a little dirt?" he asks at the breakfast stop in Wytheville.

"no prob," says i, "as long as it's not TOO gnarly - a Road King is a Road King, after all."

well, the paved roads we rode today were, for the most part, a little dirty.

the DIRT roads we rode today were, for the most part, A LITTLE DIRTY!!!

and muddy.

and, in some places, covered in compact snow and ice.

you dirty (literally and figuratively) BASTIGES!!!!

epiphany #1: if we ever ride with these guys again, i will NOT clean my motorcycle before hand.

epiphany #2: if we ever plan on riding with these guys again, maybe i should trade the RK in on a Uly...

grand adventure gents, we enjoyed almost every s/mile of it!

pix at 11.

plop, plop, whiz, whiz, oh what a relief it is

every ride worthy of the name HAS to have the obligatory pic of someone taking a whiz. in this case, it's NUTS, er, um, erm...draining his Jason.

ssssssssssssssssssssss.............................

hey, y'know what you can hear when all the frikkin' Buell rear cylinder cooling fans in attendance finally shut off? air escaping from NUTS' rear tire, is what.

Road Bling

this bike was clean this morning. (not to worry, all the filth you see is merely tattoo art, available on pages 142-179 of the latest H-D P&A catalog...)

Jerry&Denise, Pleasure. Great ride today folks, danger averted at every turn. The tire looks pretty good in the garage, I'm too tired to put the psi guage on it now. Morning will reveal our roadside fix-worthiness. Me thinks a new hoop is in order though! I promise to show you folks a plethora of good CLEAN roads in the future. NUTS

Everything hurts. 500 miles today. I'm glad I did it.

I rode most of that route about 6 weeks ago. The roads were all clean then. I don't know where all that gravel came from, but it sucked, particularly on 623. I really am not comfortable when the back tire is sliding around, and it did that a lot today.

The ice on 623 was interesting. Crossing a sheet of ice isn't one of the things they teach in the MSF class. I guess they figure you'll have enough sense not to try. The sheer drop off is an encouragement to get it right. : )

16 was great. Watching Ferris pass me 2 up on the road king was fantastic. I tried to keep up for a little while, but decided that was a good way to die.

I'm going to bed. You all sleep well.

Jim

Jerry,
Priceless photo of Ole' Nuts taking a whizz.
I told these guys a long time ago he has a bladder the size of a walnut.

Nuts,
Sorry I missed ya this evening. I had RAYSA signups from 12:00-3:30PM and then came home and crashed until just now. Got a wicked migraine from all the whining parents not to mention the cheerleaders practicing behind me at the rec club. Ahh, the joys of ball season!

Jim,
Remind me to never take one of your short cuts. I bet Jason told ya'll I would never subject the Bolt' to such heinous riding conditions.

I should have warned ya'll that Jason's Uly sucks the brains right out of the dude!!

It makes him do things that wouldn't be possible on a "normal" bike. But...I would follow on the sLow, without hesitation.

I gotta get out there for the chase...
Obviously too much fun to pass up.

Everything hurts. 500 miles today...

nine more days of that back-to-back and you've got yerself an FBRAT. ;)

I really am not comfortable when the back tire is sliding around.

i really am not comfortable watching people sliding off the side of a steep, mountainous road - glad you hauled yerself back on that one corner. : )

Crossing a sheet of ice isn't one of the things they teach in the MSF class.

that was a first for me on the RK, to be sure. can't say i particularly "enjoyed" it, but, as we all made it across without tossing a single bike, it'll sure be cool to brag about it for years to come!

Watching Ferris pass me 2 up on the road king was fantastic. I tried to keep up for a little while, but decided that was a good way to die.

do what i do: close yer eyes!!! ;)

predictably, about the time i got around you (which wasn't all that easy), we got back into the marbles again, and then i got stuck behind that car that ignored all the easy, wide turn-outs, which, alas, was just as well, 'cause the marbles were thick enough by then to push the thought of making intentional sparks from the floorboards entirely out of the question.

thanks for a great adventure, Jim, we really enjoyed ourselves. it's been since Oktoberfast 2005 that me 'n D took a Saturday off to go riding, and yesterday was a Saturday we won't forget. : ): )

FB&D

ps: serious props are due to Denise. she's a great rider, and has many two-wheeled adventures of her own in her log book (how many of you have ridden to Alaska? I haven't...), but she has also grown to become an excellent passenger. i think you'll agree that navigating the RK two-up on a marbly corner at speed, or across an ice floe, or around a tight, muddy, uphill hairpin takes a passenger with guts and skill, both of which she possesses in spades. thx sweetie, you rock! : )

She's ridden to Alaska? I've got someone I need to introduce you to. She actually lives in your state now, though at the other side. Apparently last year she decided to ride her bike from SC to Alaska solo. That takes some guts. I'm going to point her to this thread, perhaps she will chime in.

Jim,
Was great to meet you and everyone - another great adventure (though would prefer to leave the sludge to a different scoot and the ice alone). Props go to Ferris - would not have trusted to be on the back with anyone but - through that ride. DO look forward to having the time later in the season for more, right now it's back to the grindstone.

Alaska was some moons ago. Did not ride there though, flew in and rented BMW's 650 Funduro for a couple weeks. It really was a great trip. And that would be a bike I would look at again. Would have been perfect for yesterday's ride. Probably the longest trip for me was to Canada on my very first bike, a Ninja 600. Talk about the wrong bike for me. But it served it's purpose, made it to Canada from Southern CA and back. Would enjoy chatting with your friend, one can never have too many friends. : )

Jerry&Denise, my plan was to follow you to Fancy Gap and the BRP and then head North. I soon realised I only had my Dark shield and it was getting a bit nipply. I broke off on 221 knowing it would run me 1/8 mile from my house...eventually. The road was clean and I was able to run 65mph the whole curvy way. Stopped in Floyd to cram a powerbar down my neck along with an old-timey bottle (glass) of Coke. Hands thawed, i-pod shuffled and I was ready to roll the last 40 miles home. An elderly gentleman asked me if I had "Tiger Paws" on that thing? I just nodded and twanged some semblance of speech out.
For being so tired I slept awful last night, I could hear the wind and rain constantly. I awoke to the sight of ice on the ground and thought... Where can I get a set of "Tiger Paws?" Denise, your a trooper on the back of that RK. I think you'll be needing a scoot of your own here soon. I know our friend The-raven would be happy to sell you an 05 GS 650 that was just traded in. I'm trying to locate a surplus Roanoke event calendar so we might be able to attend some of the weekly festivals downtown. The strawberry one is great if you like shortcake and cream. The micro brewery (Microfestivus) celebraton is great for naming a designated driver. Anyhoo, off to spray yesterday off the Uly! NUTS

Seriously, days start pretty early here and run pretty late right now - we take the work as it comes in. Look forward to the day I can read one of your reports and say, hey, I've been there! Was always cool back in CA to open the latest issue of any MC mag, read a ride report and be able to relate to every word, every corner. : ) Look forward to meeting, and riding, with you.
