Hey, Alchie we should do a local ride...maybe breakfast at the Ridge Diner or somewhere closer to Collegeville or Valley Forge.

Shoot me an email like on a Saturday or Saturday night and let's hook up for some Sunday morning.

Hey Xb12xscpa,
I did not know you live in Chambersburg! Next time I heading home on my bike, I will let you know in advance I was going to ride home this weekend, I ususally take 56 down to route 30, then hit 30 all the way to Gettysburg, then 116 into Hanover. Its a pretty decent ride until you get to all the construction in Chambersburg! My girlfriend's parents live in Scotland down the road from the Scotland School for Veterans children. I will have to let you know next time I am around that area.
Where you in Johnstown Sept 9th? I had just parted ways with Toona, and waved at a fellow on a black Uly. Did you buy your bike at Battlefield? Thats where I bought my M-2 back in 2001, there were alot more Buells there back then...

I live right behind the C-burg mall and work there on what used to be Letterkenny. I saw you there this morning and am not used to seeing Buells in this area. I bought from Battlefield (they don't know a thing). I wasn't in Johnstown anytime recent. I saw a red Buell (went by too fast) parked in C-burg last weekend, can't find them again either. Whenever you're around let me know. I'll PM you and give you contact info.

That early in the morning for me, all I caught was that the plastics and tank were yellow. I don't know if it had bags on or not. It may have even been a blast.

Wow weee, the PA thread went a month w/o a post? Dang, must be cold out.

It did warm up enough to get out the Buell for a 25 mile ride (one way) to lunch at Clem's BBQ (just south of State College) Their pulled pork BBQ sandwiches are worth the ride! Plus the "semi" twisties between here and there were a welcome ride. It's mostly back road 2 lane country roads. Too bad it's going to get ugly (cold and wet) again here through next week, argh.

On a side note, I have the VDSTS software coming from Al @ American Sport Bike, so if anyone needs a TPS reset or engine fault codes decifered, I 'd be more than willing to help a fellow Bueller out.

Anyone else getting any seat time in?

Hi Toona,

I rode to work yesterday. Nicely warm here outside Philly but I don't like the ride home in the dark so much. A car about 5 places in front of me narrowly missed (I think) a deer on last nights ride.

My Uly has been acting a bit wierd lately in this colder weather. Idle drifts higher and my fan is still coming on even down in the 30's which is not what I expected.

I will be riding a bit this morning. I would really love to take you up on the TPS reset but I am a bit far away for this weather.

Hey Al, How many miles on the Uly? I've read the more miles the less the fan comes on. Mine still came on when pulled in for BBQ the other day, but it was 65 degrees out, with some 40 mph traffic for the last 2 miles to BBQ. I'm coming up on 9,000 miles on mine.

Hi Toona,

Good question to ask. I have just over 2200 miles. I switched to synthetic oil at 1000 miles. My expectation is that at some mileage about now, the fan will come on less. This has happened to a small degree.

I learned something Saturday about the fan. I rode in low 50 degree weather and the fan did not come on. The difference was that I was riding at about 20 mph higher speed than my normal commute. Normally I ride about 22 miles at 40 to 50 mph over about 40 minutes and the fan comes on even in the low forties and thirties. Once it comes on it will not go off. I think the slower going during the commute time is a larger issue than I would have thought. It may be that even a few minutes at idle in lineups at lights and backups at one-lane covered bridges causes the engine to really heat up even in cool/cold ambient temperatures.

I had always thought that running the engine at about 45 mph typically under 2500 rpm would be the coolest the engine would run. Maybe it takes a higher speed to maximize the efficiency of the air-cooled design and keep the engine cool.

Or maybe 2200 miles is still too new when using synthetics after the initial breakin.

I have around 14k on my Uly (with the Syn oil since 1k) and the fan doesn't come on all that often (or maybe I'm just used to it). It seems to come on less often and stay on for less when the engine is shut down. To tell you the truth, I'm more nervous when the fan doesn't come on (what with the "fan failure" thread)

I would have no problem with replacing the fan every 10k just for peace of mind. I probably will do just that.

I would like to have an improved solution to the fan at some point in terms of noise. I would think that once Buell is ordering 20 or 30k fans a year they can begin to ask for some very custom work to optimize the fan for durability and quiet. Of course I am running the stock muffler so I hear the fan a little more clearly than some. If I got a Drummer my fan tolerance would probably go way up<grin>.

I have to think that in the case of my Uly it is just not really broken in yet. The fan is still running a lot and the gas mileage is still in the 40s even though in my opinion I should be getting top mileage with the way I ride.

I was sort of hoping that my mileage would go up and the fan drop off so that when I get the 07 air box installed I will have a better idea of the need for the updated computer code. As it is I will probably install the new air box about the same time as the engine calms down and I won't know what is responsible for what<grin> or if the new code is necessary.

Al, my bike didn't seem to break in until around 4-5k miles.

I don't think you would have to change the ECM just because you change to the '07 airbox (inner or outer). Just take the bike out and keep it around 4000 rpm for 10 minutes, the stock ECM will self adjust to the new air/fuel mixture.
MY thoughts are, you only have to change to the race ECM if you change the muffler.

Hi Toona,

I don't think I described it correctly. Buell is recommending that if using the 07 airbox on an 06 bike that the ECM should be reflashed with the 07 programming. Some folks are doing it and some are not. I don't think there is enough info available yet to know if one approach is better than another.

I have these airbox covers:
'04 (black that came with bike)
'05 solid red, city X blue
'06 Valencia Orange
and '07 Cherry Bomb.

I can't tell the difference between performance when switching between a/b covers, but I have the '04 frame that has the opening in the frame from the left side air scoop where the snorkel used to be, as well as a drilled inner a/b cover.

Toona,

Buell made a change to the airbox itself not the cover. They opened up a lot more holes to the airfilter for the 07 Uly particularly on the left side (I think). This would seems to change the fuel/air dynamics a bit and indeed this may be where the reflash for the ECM comes in.

Thanks for the comments on the 4500 mileage until the engine smoothed out. I my be a little premature in my expectations regarding the fan and gas mileage.

Looks like a sunny weekend coming up even if a little cool.

Sounds like great weather for a ride this weekend. Come down and say 'hello' at The Harley-Davidson/Buell Store in Baltimore. It's our Holiday Open House, and all Buell parts and accessories are 15% off. The Open House is both Saturday and Sunday, but I will only be here Saturday. Stop by and rub it in that you are NOT working!

Marlinerider,

Would you happen to have the 07 air box for the Uly in stock (don't have the part number handy). I checked and you are about 110 mile ride. Going south seems like a better idea than going north this time of year. If the weather looks so good you just might see me.

Alchemy,
Sorry I didn't check my email later last nite, I had to pack! As the store is open from 9 til 5 on Sunday, give them a call. 410-238-2003. My best guess is that we don't have it in stock, but what do I know, I work in Buell & H-D motorcycle sales.

Al, I understand that you are talking about the inner airbox cover. I "sliced and diced" mine to get more air into it. I don't have any pictures of the modified inner, but could get a picture, if you want. Cheaper than the $45 '07 inner.

Toona,

I thought about adding some ventilation. The new box moves some of the holes from the right to the left for some reason - perhaps cooler air. The price doesn't bother me too much. I think my wife may be looking for a present for me so this may go on my list ;) The reflashing of the ECM is interesting. I am waiting for my gas mileage to increase as the engine breaks-in. Not so delighted with mileage right now and if the reflash helps keep the mileage optimized then I will want that.

As Marlinrider notes it is not so likely that the dealers are carrying it in stock so it probably will get ordered. It was just a little too cold for a trip to Baltimore for me this weekend. Marlinrider, I hope the open-house went well.

Well I have a FIRST to report. On November 28th (I think) at 2278 miles my Uly fan cycled off high speed during a ride. Now I know it can happen so that is good. The fan had kicked up during some slow riding in traffic but then dropped out of high speed mode when I got to riding a little faster. Unfortunately it was in the 30's so I was soo cold I could hardly think straight. But it is great to have this happen. In the past the fan had never cycled to a slower speed.

Yesterday I did some higher speed riding while the temp was in the high 40's and the fan did not hit high speed at all so this is going in the right direction. The bike is still clearly breaking in and starting to run cooler.

How do you detect if the fan is running during "higher speed riding"?
