No problem Jim - hope all goes well with your painting! Carlos will probably have to do his soon.

Have you thought any more about MB IV? It's actually the weekend before Easter. Hope you and Rebecca can make it.

Hey yall, sorry I'm so rare on this section. I do like reading through your little stories though.

Anyway, I have a chance to go riding with my old boss this coming Tuesday. We are heading out Tuesday morning for about 3-4 hours. I was wondering if anyone knows any good routes near Charlotte. He's riding a 05 Suzuki sv1000s, I'm on a xb12s. Should be a good match up. Hoping to find something kinda' twisty without too much traffic.

We will be heading out from around the air port, and I can imagine we could ride up to about 45 minutes or so to get to our "fun route".

Well, any ideas would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
MattL

I just couldn't stomach $260 for the 15,000 mile service.

Matt, head out 218 East to Polkton, take a left, go North towards the Uwharries. Plenty of good roads there. Enjoy.

edited to correct error.

Matt - There is also NC-181 north out of Morganton. Take it to the top of the hill where US-221 intersects with it. Turn right toward Blowing Rock. These are top notch mountain roads that are great. May be a bit more than 3-4 hours total, but well worth it if the weather cooperates. A bit cooler this week coming up week.

Jim, are you saying that you service the bike yourself or still suffering from sticker shock. A bit high though for a 15,000 miles service. I think I paid $160 for mine.

Carlos, I called and scheduled the 15,000 mile service, but I'm going to cancel it. I suspect they quoted me the price for the 10,000 mile service, I seem to remember the 5000 mile service being about what you paid.

Matt,

There's some good roads within 45 minutes of the airport -- if there's no traffic the interstates.

You have enough time to leave the airport area (just suck it up) south on 85. Exit 17 take 321 north,,,it'll quit sucking once you get north of Hickory. Take it, 321, all the way to Blowing rock and look of the 221 signs. Take 221 to the last BRP exit which will then put you about 2 miles, as you're southbound, 181. You'll want to take 181 south towards Morganton -- it rocks. You can ride it all the way to the bottom and then catch old NC 10 which will drop you back off about 10 miles from Lincolnton NC.

That's a good loop for the time you've alloted.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I did the 181 route a couple months back with Holling and Spectrum. We found some amazing roads up in there. I was hoping to find something a little closer, possible into South Carolina or such. It will probably be hard to find some twisties without hitting the mountains, but just hoping someone has found a gem or two.

Wasn't sure what Rubberdown was referring to when he mentioned Uwharrie, but now I see on Mapquest that it is a National Forest. Is it a mountain region?

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. We are going to compile as much info as we can, and compare notes on Monday. Don't want to overplan it, but we have a limited amount of time available for play, so have to make best use of it.

Thanks!

Is it a mountain region?

They call Morrow Mountain a mountain, but its more like a big hill. Their are some elevation changes but the roads, though not as twisted as a mountain pass, they do weave through some beautiful scenery. Take a look at the Parent / Child thread in the Adventure folder for pictures of the Uwharrie.

Goodness! I'm sitting here in my office in downtown Raleigh. I hear a distant thunder. Wait - it's a beautiful day - nary a cloud in the sky. Look out the window. About 100 bikes slowly make their way down the street, and circle the Capitol. The bikes are now parked in the street and the riders are all over the lawn of the Capitol. Anyone know what group it is??

M2nc, I read through that Parent/Child thread. Nice pics! Might be a good destination for the day.

BTW, that sounded like a killer trip. You all think it will become an annual thing?

Another question, what is the youngest age you would take your child on your bike for a road trip? I've taken my son around the block, him wearing just a dirt bike helmet. He's almost 5. My daughter is almost 7. Just wondering if it is feasible/legal/practical at these ages to take the kids anywhere. Don't wanna' run out and buy the jr gear if they'll never use it. They can both reach the passenger pegs, but can barely hold on to me. I've driven my son around with him sittin' in front of me, which I'm sure is probably illegal. Maybe I should just stick with the little 70cc ATCs with them.

Mattl- Ridin with your kids depends on the kids for the most part. The only law that I have heard of is they must be able to reach the footpegs in some states. Started riding with our youngster when she was about 5. Wife and I both had Sportsters at the time. She would fall asleep on the back of mine by the end of the block, long story short we ended up trading in the both sporties for a FLH and sidecar rig. Put about 15K on it going everywhere from Daytona to New England. Packed it up and if she feel asleep in the sidecar we just kept on riding. Some great times and we never had to stop riding. Now she is 14 and to cool to ride in the sidecar so it sits in the garage most of the time.

None of my business but I would never ride with mine in front of me, if you have to emergency stop or something he or she could end up a projectile. Having said that I logged may a mile this way when I was not much older but then again we didn't wear seat belts much then either.
Please don't take offense by this statement as none is intended.

Matt - The parent/child thing was a lot of fun. It was the first time we had gotten all three of our daughters together, and they have remained friends. Thats the best part. I took the 3 of them to the state fair in Oct and they had a great time.

I've been wondering about the laws for kids myself, as I've got a 6 yo son. I just did a google search, and apparently there is no minimum age in NC. Take a look at:

BTW, that sounded like a killer trip. You all think it will become an annual thing?

We hope too. So we have to talk about when and where this year. We actually did a second ride this year. Its the Ferry Ride Thread. U4ueh and his daughter were not able to make it on that ride. Both parents and children had a great time on both rides.

As for kids on bikes, Carlee was seven when she started riding around the backroads of little Grifton. Our defecto director actually bought her a helmet so she could ride with him before I was comfortable with her riding with me. Today Carlee actually has more riding gear than I do. Kristi found a competition leather Icon jacket with armor for a song. I do not have such a jacket. She also has two helmets, Joe Rocket Phoenix Summer Riding Jacket, Joe Rocket riding pants, boots and HD leather gloves.

I have two younger children, Baylee 5, and Luke 2.

Baylee does not show much interest in riding like Carlee did. I have put Carlee's first helmet on her and rode her around the neighborhood in front of me. She can not reach the pegs and is not ready for anything more than around the block at 25mph.

Luke on the other hand wants nothing more than to ride with me. So far I have only rode him on Webe's Blast and my M2 on the driveway. He always wants to ride so I am sure it will be tough as he gets older wanting to ride with me. He is definitely too small to ride on the street and it will be many years before I do anything more than around the block with him.

Flynuly,
No offense taken. I also would never do it at speed. The few times I've done it, it was at tops 15MPH. We've ridden the 3wheelers a lot together, so he's pretty good at holding on and and getting real good at leaning into turns. But yeah, on a motorcycle on public roads, he'd be in full gear and behind me... or sidecar. Hmmmm... sounds fun!

Thanks for the link Jim. Was thinking of getting a cute pink helmet for my 7 year old daughter, so I could at least pick her up from school occasionally or something. Would probably have to get a gender neutral one though so we can pass it down to the other 3.

BTW, I noticed on that AMA site, they say that Lane Splitting isn't specifically referenced in the state laws. Have you all heard anything about the legality of that in NC? I would only do it during stopped traffic, and go real slow in order to avoid angry responses. I just sit in traffic lots commuting to Charlotte.

Fly - Very neat story. I have a friend up the road that has a Ural. I want a Trooper 2wd for ATV-Street use and riding the two little ones around the country roads where traffic is scarce.

Matt - One foot note, Carlee did not start riding with me more than thirty miles until she was a little older and more accomplished. I also had a backrest on my CB750 and of course the Uly. I made the mistake of taking her on a day ride on the M2. I did not feel very confident that she would not fall off the back so the M2 is a solo bike for me.

Running a 1/2 marathon (13.1) mi.) with my wife today in Randleman. A benefit for the Victory Junction Gang disabled kids camp. Richard Petty is the Grand Marshall, Kyle's running it along with some other NASCAR drivers. Should be hoot.

glad I got to ride yesterday!!!

It was a hoot. That's some camp they have built there. Nice job guys. Very hard course, up/down up/down. Great riding roads around there. I ran it in 1 hr 52 min. plus some seconds. Sitting around eating afterwards, Trish and I were talking to this nice older woman and her family. Turns out it was Linda Petty, Richard's wife, and some of their family. REally nice folks. They donated the 72 acres for the camp and live on then property adjoining. The NASCAR crew have done a nice thing for the kids. Michael Waltrip looked totally beat after the run. Poor guy was just trying to eat and recover and they were filming some sort of documentary with the microphone and camera on him the whole time. Between that, the people constantly beseiging him for autographs, and the exhaustion; I think he just wanted to hide. Nice fellow to put up with all that. He was very gracious. O.k., I'm tired too. Trish did great and had a personal best.

Hey Dave...

Its good to hear from you, man. I drove by your old house on Connecticuit St and was reminded of your being gone. The goaty looks good Devil Dog. Hey, all us good Marines let it grow when we get out. It's good to see you smiling. Real Good. Hotel life is hell, I know, you know. Hopefully this is your last "TMO." My family and I usually head to Ft. Collins, CO and this next time we were thinking about the southern route. If I get near OK, I'm gonna hook you up. Plus, I have a lot of old Marine buddies out in the OK.

Look Dave, on a more serious note, I hope all goes well, hard core. Take care of yourself, look up Sgt Grit, (he's there in OK) and stay strong.
