Cool captions Ebear!

It was a good day. We were pacing Robbie Dowie exactly for the last 20 laps and with the extra 30 sec on a failed rear tire change (30 sec more than practice) - we might have taken 4th. A pit stop might have cost $2000 in prize money.

Scott's goal was a top 5 finish. He did that and left smiling.

Jesus Amezcua's death in T9 really did put a damper on things but as everybody who has ever raced agreed: NOBODY would want anybody to miss the next race if it had been one of us.

Kudos to the whole WMSC staff for keeping it together, keeping things running.

Ebear - sorry we couldn't be more social. We had to mod the forks and Saturday night late we mounted the big tank for the first time. After that, we kept grinding metal off of the back of the calipers to get as much clearance from the wheel as possible. Saved a full couple seconds in the pits after the grinder work! We were joking that everytime the grinder came out, we gained a half second - but Scott wouldn't let us grind on anything else!

If you look at the pics, you can see an R-1 tank top welded to the GSXR bottom. Good for 44 laps at 1:24 per lap.

On the red flag, we changed rubber and topped off the tank.

With the 3 hour delay and such a late start, Scott was heading into the sun and racers were blowing their pits. Scott came roaring in and he was still doing maybe 80 with the wheels locked when he just blasted out to go around again. This time coming in, he counted seconds he remembered coming in the last time before he saw us... but we're hearing all that AFTER the race was over. Would that have made a difference in our standing directly in front of him as he came into the pit? Dunno but it did make us think!

We were also providing pit support for Erik Haugo and Dominick Jones. Dominick was out from New Zealand. He came back in after being black-flagged for having shedded his bellypan. We pulled one off of another busted GSXR and with a handful of zip-ties and half a roll of duct tape, the referee let him back out on the track to finish the race. Even losing 3 laps for the bodywork change, Dominick STILL came in 18th! He's a cool kid. Pitted with us up at Laguna but was taken out in the T1 furball that downed 6 riders then. He's got a good attitude.

Much more to report.

Thanks for the pix Eric!

If you wouldn't mind - could you send some to Scott? We were so freaking buried alive that we got almost no pics at all and we wanted to at least get a couple to sponsors. We can get the on-track race pics from the track but the pit activity is a cool set to add to his collection.

Fun weekend fer sure - email out to you Ebear.

We were a tad disappointed in the pushrod seal blowing on my bike. Dixon STILL came in 3rd but with Marlon Ibarra winning on the Ducati, Dixon is now going to have to struggle to win the Middleweight Twins class.

I'm cleaning my bike up for our Lockheed Custom Vehicle annual show this Thursday. It'll be there on display in "as-raced" condition.

I always show the pics of the frame dents to people who say "you can't crash a Buell."

Saturday night was a bear.

We had to try to mount the quick-fill (vacuum-break) fitting to the tank, mount up the fuel pump and do a couple fill tests. Found we had a missing O-ring in the dump can so that started another chase.

About midnight, I got the tank rattle-can painted. We were beat so decided to wait to do fill tests and pit practicing on Sunday AM.

The front end nearly killed us. Ohlins gas-sprung superbike forks have a long way to go before they're user-friendly enough for somebody doing their own work or who can afford the $400 per month needed for an overhaul every 10 hours of use (Ohlins recommendation)

We spent a zillion hours grinding away on the calipers trying to get clearance between the calipers and the wheel for the quick change. Finally got the change down to about 15 sec.

We were told on Saturday by the WSMC referee that the Ohlins forks were technically quick change and we had to modify the lead-in so the wheel wasn't "held" in place by the forks until the axle was inserted - that and the grinding on the calipers was nearly an all-nighter.

Front

Scott installed the axle nuts and adjuster/sliders so they were held in place by safety wire. Worked like a charm in practice BUT had problems in the race with lining up the safety pin (added maybe 30 seconds during the race - bummer)

rear

Toye and Rapp were AWESOME - turning 1:22 laps down to the final. 3 laps up on the rest of the field. Jason Perez (3rd) ran a flawless race. Robbie Dowie (4th) was running exactly the same pace after we came out of the pits for the last time but who knows if we didn't blow the second pit if he wouldn't have picked it up a bit if his pit board showed us to be closer... we'll never know. Dowie ran a good race - took home $2000 more than Jensen for his trouble.

Ultimately at the end of the day Sunday, it was all worthwhile. Scott wanted to finish in the top 5 - he did.

No but tell Dustin that Slaughter said HI!

You been on Big Willow yet? TrackDaz is a good group and will give you a great intro to the track. It is a great place to race and to go out to play and TrackDaz is a great operation.

I'm sure the fire will be out but I don't think the washed out section of road is scheduled for completion for a long while. You can come up and over Angeles Forest - across Mount Emma and up the back side by Llano.

You can always call Newcomb's Ranch to ask if the road is opened yet.

Yeah it's still closed. I was going to go ACH to upper big T to AFH to Emma Mt. Rd. to Fort Tejon Rd. up to Big Pines which brings you back on to route 2 to Wrightwood. It is a little longer but it's still a great ride.

edit: Doh, sorry Slaughter didn't read your whole post before responding, damn brush fire. I hope it will be out before Sunday. If not hopefully lower T will be open from Sunland.

Stuck at work and the whole desert is smoky from the BIG fire so we kinda forget about that local fire by ACH. Ought to log onto one of the news stations (no radio in our building)

Can't ride this weekend, we're diving at Catalina Saturday and visiting friends on Sunday.

Have a great ride, wear your respirator - the smoke today was terrible!

SCAB meetings at Knollwoods in Yorba Linda have been scheduled for the first Thursday of even months for some time now. The next one by that schedule would have been NEXT week (not this Thursday, but the following).

However, Eric (Ebear) is taking night classes and can not make Thursdays any more.
Thursdays have always sucked for me as well as I have a schedule conflict on most Thursday nights. Since Eric and I are somewhat mandatory attendees (he is the club treasurer and keeper of the info on all things Laguna Seca, I bring the raffle goodies), we've moved it to Wednesday night next week. Hopefully this doesn't have conflicts for any of you, please contact me if it does. We will discuss the best time/place for future SCAB meetings at this meeting, but Tuesdays are also out for Eric's night class.

So, the next Knollwoods meeting will be on Wednesday, October 4th. It will NOT be on Thursday, October 5th.

If you are planning on attending the American Sport Bike BBQ in Buellton on the weekend of October 13-15, you need to make your RSVPs right away and get a hotel room, they're booking up fast. See http://www.americansportbike.com/2006_BBQ.htm
and
http://www.americansportbike.com/shop/cgi-bin/cp-app.cgi?usr=51F144054&rnd=58227 98&rrc=N&affl=&cip=71.136.91.145&act=&aff=&pg=prod&ref=BBQ06&cat=specials&catstr =HOME:specials.
We've got over 80 RSVPs so far, so it will be a grand weekend. I'll be sending out more emails to the folks that have RSVP'd later this week, so please do that now if you're planning on attending.

See ya next wednesday.

Here is some preliminary info for the ride planned up to the American Sport Bike BBQ in Buellton.

Plan is to meet somewhere near the bottom of Angeles Crest (La Canada) at 1:00PM on Friday 13th. If someone knows of the best place to group up there, please tell me.

From there, the ride goes like this (assuming the raging fires cooperate, as some of the areas that are planned are currently burning, see http://fire.countyofventura.org/)

Go up over the beginning of the Crest to Angeles Forest. See http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=buellton,+CA&ie=UTF8&z=13&ll=34.240757,- 118.189545&spn=0.069961,0.204105&om=1

Then take Angeles Forest over to Palmdale, see http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=buellton,+CA&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=13&ll=34.302 181,-118.13118&spn=0.06991,0.204105 and http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=buellton,+CA&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=12&ll=34.443 725,-118.096161&spn=0.139584,0.408211&iwloc=A

Cross Palmdale via 14 or whatever, go to Elizabeth lake Road, see http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=buellton,+CA&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=12&ll=34.617 67,-118.280869&spn=0.139293,0.408211&iwloc=A

Take Pine Canyon road over to 138 where it hits 5, see http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=buellton,+CA&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=12&ll=34.711 703,-118.578873&spn=0.139135,0.408211&iwloc=A

A brief blast down 5 for a short section until we hit Frazier park, see http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=buellton,+CA&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=12&ll=34.802 246,-118.945198&spn=0.179577,0.411301&iwloc=A

Veer right on Cuddy Valley/Mil Protrero/Cerro Noroeste, up until 166, see
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=buellton,+CA&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=12&ll=34.885 649,-119.341393&spn=0.179395,0.411301&iwloc=A

Take a left on 166 for the boring stretch, then turn left on Tepesquet Road. JimSB tells me this road is great. See http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=buellton,+CA&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=13&ll=34.987 816,-120.209141&spn=0.089586,0.20565

A brief Left then Right on Foxen canyon Rd, see http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=buellton,+CA&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=14&ll=34.841 704,-120.244675&spn=0.044873,0.102825

and
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=buellton,+CA&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=13&ll=34.736 111,-120.138073&spn=0.089861,0.20565

Then we cross 154 and onto Ballard Canyon road, which pretty much takes us right to Buellton. See http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=buellton,+CA&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=13&ll=34.645 636,-120.148888&spn=0.089959,0.20565

JimSB has been on all these roads and assures me that it will be very cool ride. I purposely avoided the roads that the long ride Saturday will take (i.e., 150 and 33 though Ojai and such)

If we leave at 1:00 PM, and maintain a brisk pace, we'll get in by sunset(about 6:15 or so), but barely. I'd leave a little earlier, but I have to do a bunch of stuff here early Friday to get Joanne on the road. She's driving the truck and trailer up with all the raffle goodies and such in it.

We'll be leaving Biggs Oceanside at 10:50 AM sharp in order to get to La Canada by 1:00. If someone knows a waypoint in Orange county that makes sense, we'll pick up riders there too. But it should be right on the way from Oceanside to La Canada.

We need to figure out a good route back on Sunday as well, hopefully one that avoids the same roads we're going up on. But that's kinda tough, as there is nothing that crosses that Los Padres national forest/wilderness area between 150/33 and 166. So some overlap is necessary.

It's going to be an epic weekend.

I'm gonna try to get off work early enough on Friday to meet the southern group over at Tepusquet Road & Hwy 166. From Frazier Park on there is not a lot of gas stops (Pine Mtn, New Cuyama) so those with short range tanks may have to take a quick trip into Santa Maria before heading down Foxen Canyon Road. I'll run Buellton back to 166 this weekend just to get a figure on miles for you.

Al,

On the flip side, probably 154/101 South, 126 East, I-5 South, 14 East, 138 East, I-15 South would bypass much of the big city traffic?

Sparky,
Probably. JimSB tells me that we want to be past the 154 before the afternoon because CHP likes to set up sobriety checks on the road that turn it into a parking lot. I guess they're trying to nab all the drunk boaters off the lake up there or something. But I think we'd be past it before then anyway.

Scott,
We're not going to be on the 138, just heading in the same direction as it and hitting 5 at about the same spot that 138 hits 5. But that's a bummer if true, because it likely means there will be a bit more traffic on the roads we will be on.

JimSB says that Pine Canyon is a great road.
