I'm not riding Sunday either. I'm working. That's the only way for me to get off on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Also, I won't be going anywhere on the 6th, 7th, or 8th. I close on the house the 29th (fingers crossed) and so because of the rally, won't actually move until that following weekend.

In terms of the Enchanted Circle, I don't see why we couldn't still do it. We could Low Road up to Taos, then the rest of the circle is fine. Probably just have to be careful when we get down near Sipapu. Even when I was on the "chewed up" High Road, I took it pretty fast and had fun. ALso, that TA/TP run was good even though it was under construction for a short stretch. And if 84 is fixed up the way Kim says, then we could use that as a possible route.

Anyway, look forward to seeing you all next weekend.

Head south on 14 thru Tejeras, all the way down to Mountainair, then 55 down thru Gran Quivera to Hwy 54. Continue south to Carrizozo, then take Hwy 380 east to Capitan.
Then head south on Hwy 48/37 to Ruidosa. This will turn into Randle dr. and will bring yhou into the west side of Ruidosa. It T's with the main drag.

bummer your gonna miss the Rally, but enjoy your trip. Ruidosa has some nice roads around the area.
If you have time take the back road down past the Inn of the mountain gods resort to Cloudcroft and back.

I talked to Murrae last night, he said he'll be posting a road report tonight or tomorrow. He had said he had a couple of riders out on the roads this weekend, and they all pretty much reported all the roads are rideable, with few problems.
With nice weather and decent roads, this is shaping up to be a decent ride.
I'd still bring a few cold weather garments, it will be cold in the mornings, and it does tend to get cold up in the higher elevations.

Hey Folks-
All of the routes are OK. I've ridden the Brazos (Rt.64) and 84 is great except for 3/4 mile of packed dirt. The remaining route is either new or in good shape. I also have ridden the Jemez paved portion and Rt 14 from Santa Fe to Cedar Crest and it's all good. Another rider has ridden the Jemez and the route to the Ponderosa and reports that the roads are great. We have a great Ulysses route for Saturday that Zane has ridden. The High Road has some areas that will require some caution but nothing that is out of hand. This may be corrected by the weekend. A rider went through this past Sunday and had no issues. I may ride it on Thursday for a final report.
The weather report looks great, but as Bart says, bring some layers- it is brisk in the early morning and the top of the Brazos is 10500'. You can all check www.weather.com for the latest.
The only negative I've heard is that the local cops are monitoring Sandia Crest Road (part of the peak to peak ride friday) pretty heavily due to a recent motorcycle death and handing out reckless driving citations if they see riders leaning excessively or hanging off the seat. Most of this is on the weekends, but we need to be heads up and watch for signals from other riders.
Everything is in place- the t-shirts are great, the food is lined up, we even have transportation from the hotel to the Saturday dinner and back so we don't have drinking and riding issues.
Let's ride!!

So everyone,
Since this is my first real ride, how does this work? Does everyone meet up at Santa Fe HD and ride from there all together, or do we all go at our own time and pace?
Should I be at Santa Fe HD at a certain time for the Friday run?
If I don't think I can keep up do I just ride my own ride and meet up with you all later?
Sorry for all the questions, just a little nervous.
Thanks,
Rob

Brewtus,
yes, just go to Santa Fe HD/Buell and register for the event sometime on Friday during business hours. There, the BRAG officers will fill you in on the intinerary, and you can decide which group you wish to ride with.
I'm not sure if there is a planned ride for Friday, but there are a number of rides/routes available for everyone to ride. It's all your choice.
the groups will be small, and going in different directions/routes.
If you can't keep up, don't worry. Most of us leading the rides will pull over on a regular basis to let the slower riders catch up and to enjoy the scenery, etc.
REMEMBER, it's not a bad thing to be slow, it is a GOOD thing to be safe and make it to the end of the ride. : )
We want everyone to enjoy themselves, and We try to take all into consideration.
Don't be nervous, just plan on enjoying yourself. There will be maps handed out with your BRAG package you receive. Look it, and the routes over carefully, and take it with you!
If you end up on the route I am leading you have no worries as I cater to the slower crowd. : )

Don't worry about the questions or the nervousness, it's ok. Just plan on enjoying yourself, and meeting new friends. It's all good.

Thanks for the help Bartimus! I really am looking forward to going on these rides and meeting new friends as well as having as much fun as possible. I have been looking forward to this all month. Every time I think about it my stomach gets all twisted with excitement. I made arrangements at work and with the family to attend this event. I will be there looking for all that have been here answering all my questions and sharing information with myself and others. Thanks again!! See you Friday, I will be there early!

Just an update.

There is a ride planned for Friday, I don't know what time they are planning on leaving the dealership. It is the peak to peak run, Murrae has maps, and there will be riders along who know the routes.

Don't sweat it, I did my first group rides with these guys. They were great!
You are going to have a great time.

Rob,

This is also my first group ride. I feel just as you do. This is also my first trip overnight on a bike so I'm struggling with the packing part since I'm staying at the Hotel to get away from the kids for a weekend.

I was planning on getting there early on Friday. What time is the Peak to Peak ride starting so I know when to be there by?

Looks like I'll miss the "organized" Peak to Peak on Friday then; there's a seminar at UNM I want to attend that's over sometime after 11:00...probably won't quite make it to SF in time. No worries.

Dr_greg,

You could probably meet the group at the Sandia Peak and make the trip back up to Santa Fe with us. You could make your UNM function as well as get part of the Friday ride in. Just a thought so you don't have to head up alone.

I was thinking of heading up Hwy 14 around 2PM.
Not sure what the timetable will end up being on the peak to peak ride, but if anyone wants to ride up with me we can meet somewhere on the east side and head up together.
Maybe even meet the Santa Fe group at the top or bottom of the crest?

I got a great shot on top of Santa Fe on Friday with part of the group. The photo is much better full size with all the changing leaves and such in the background. It was great meeting all the people I did. I hope I get to do it more often.

Murrae, thanks for everything and especially the work on Sunday.

WOW! What a great time! This was one of the best rides I've done in NM in the last three years of Buellin'!!

So, because Bart wasn't there, I'll recount my sphincter clench from today:

We're riding 64 from TP to TA. The "fast" group is Bill, Kelly, Chris the Brit, and the guy on the black X1 who's name I can't remember. Me and Luis take off after them leaving Murrae to lead the rest of the group.

The front four quickly pull about a half mile ahead of Luis and I. But we're having a good time doing 100mph thru the sweepers. We'd agreed to stop at the top in advance to give Nate a chance to take group photos, etc. So, we do. Of course, Kelly and Chris had passed Bill and didn't stop. They eventually found their way back.

After this stop, the "fast" guys are farting around and basically not ready when everyone else is to leave. Murrae is waiting for his ducks to get into a row, so I take off with Luis in tow. We haul ass down the west side of the mountains passing several cars and enjoying the twisties. We catch up to Nate in the SUV and he starts taking shots of us out the window as we follow and lean through the curves. (I thought Marie was going to wipe out a few times cause she was hauling ass in that truck/SUV.)

Eventually, they pull to the side and we pass. At that point, there are a few nice "full-radius" 300* turns, nice perfect curves with a slight downhill. We do a long right, a quick 90* left and go downhill into a long right 300* curve.

As I'm going around this thing, I'm really hauling ass and leaning way over. I know Luis is right behind me even though I haven' looked in the mirror. He's been like my shadow for the past 20 miles. So, because of the hill, I can't see the end of the curve or what comes next. I'm looking as far through it as I can when finally it opens up for me to see the road. What do I see?

An 18-wheeler hog truck. The front of this truck is in my lane facing me with his left wheel in my right shoulder. The trailer is stretched out across the whole road where it eventually registers that he pulled out of some dirt path in the field there. He's turning uphill right at me but blocking the entire road. He's going like 5mph and I'm going like 500mph.

He must've seen us and shit too cause he kept it moving creating a SMALL opening behind his trailer that just seems to have fit a white Firebolt. I made a bee line to the opening while braking like a mad man and downshifting two gears at once.

I squeek through the opening and simultaneously realize that the road curves back left and thankfully nobody is coming. I look in the mirror to make sure that Luis isn't hog slop and what do I see? THREE MOTORCYCLES!! About 2mm behind Luis is Bill Conway and about 2mm behind him is Murrae.

At this point, we are all alive and rolling, but I pull over anyway because I'm thinking that someone else could be right behind them and this fag still crossing the whole road to get on his right side. Thankfully, nobody else was confronted with that.

Later, when I told them about it, they said, "What hog truck?"

Anyone want to buy a set of "used" leathers? Only soiled once.

PS: I'll post my pics later.

A rally postscript:

What a great weekend! Many thanks to all who attended and made the event possible. This was a rider's event from the beginning and the weather and roads were excellent. Both old and new friends.

Thanks to Marie for approving the event and all of her support. Also thanks to Nathan for attending and taking great pics.
Marie told me they are holding the current copy of FUELL magazine so they can get the rally report in. Nathan's photos should be on the Buell website under the BRAG pull down for "adventures" in about two weeks. I can email Marie and ask about CD copies if anyone is interested. Ping me at mhaynes@ridenow.com and let me know. I'm sure there will be many postings with photos- Bart and CJ are usually covering events.

Many thanks to those who supported the event- Santa Fe Buell and Bob McLaughlin for the seed money and support. Many thanks to Zane, Bart, Bill, Kim and CJ for route checking and leading rides. Can't forget Mabel who put up with me not having any days off for the last three weeks.

I told Marie that we would be interested in doing something again next year and she will pass this on to BRAG. If not, we'll do the Taos Rally (now also known as the Chick Hancock Invitational) sometime in August or September. Let me know what you all want to do.

The new biker gang, "The Bastard Pups", a support gang for the Slimy Crud Gang from Wisconsin, was formed during the rally and will be taking applications as soon as Peter Egan and his crew approve. The patch should be a hoot.

Everyone ride safe. See you soon.

Yea, it would seem a great time was had by all. I know I certainly enjoyed myself. : )

Ok, here are the pics I managed to take when I wasn't moving...

Friday night meet and greet

This is from the first night, Friday at the Blue Corn, where we all got together for some chow.

nice lightning

Saturday morning, this was a Lightning with that "lightning" body work, I don't think this guy went on the ride, though.

Kelly from AZ

We passed the moderate group along the way, and stopped on a hill with a curve to take pics of the group as they went by.
Kelly strikes a pose for the folks back in AZ that didn't make it.

Hi CJ!

here CJ waves as he goes by,

BRAG group

And the rest of the group, close behind.

first gas stop, Taos

Our first gas stop in Taos.
From Taos we headed north to Questa, and then on to Red River for lunch.
I have to mention, that the road from Questa to Red river was so SWEEEET! Nice pavement, great curves, light traffic, and some of the most gorgeous colors nature could produce.

Lunch stop

The lineup outside of the lunch stop.

Mona chopper

Outside of the restaurant, there was one of those little electric "choppers" chained up.

Kelly doing the poser thing

You could tell who the "posers" are, LOL

chow time!

the "Bear"

The food was excellent, and the waitress really busted butt to keep all of us fed.

what a beauty!

Once again, the "lineup" before we left.

Mona and I separated from the group at lunch, and got ahead of them. We decided to take the low road and stop at Embudo station to check out some more foliage.

Buell foliage

Mona foliage

From there, we headed back to Santa Fe for some refreshments and relaxation before the award dinner that night...

BRAG dinner

That feller with the "bird" is the guy from England, I think he won the longest distance award, LOL.

CJ and Angela

CJ and Angela ham it up for the camera

BRAG dinner

Those fellas at the end don't look too happy, they must not have had enough beer yet...

Bad boyz

This must be where they sat the bad boyz, I see that troublemaker from AZ is there on the right. ;)

Nathan and friend

After a hard day of taking pictures, Nathan kicked back with a soda and a new friend. They both look pretty content...

So that was Saturday night. There were two routes planned on Sunday, the Brazos, where CJ had his butt puckering moment, and Hwy 14 down the east side of the Sandia's to the Ponderosa restaurant.

Sunday police escort

Here the Brazos group prepares to depart with their police escort.

Brazos group

Mona and I, along with Bear, and Rick, (and his dog, Pierre) headed down Hwy 14.
A nice lazy ride to end a great weekend.

I want to thank all the out of state riders that made it to our little corner of the world to enjoy our scenery, and curvy roads. It was a pleasure meeting you, and riding with you.
And thanks to the local New Mexicans that showed up, we put on a good show, had a good turn out, and hopefully everyone took back some great memories.

See-ya next time!

Nice pics...Wish I could have been there...Instead I had to go to Ruidoso..on the was back I was taking 532 up to Ski Apache... I only made it about 4 miles up the 12 mile ride... I crashed..pretty hard. Pics to come...The bike is thrashed...My right thigh is bruised and swollen. My right lower back has road rash and bruising. My Right shoulder is bruised..and to top it all off I my CT scan said I had a Brain bleed. According to the Neurologist and the other Doc's all should be back to good in a few weeks.

I don't really remember much about the accident... I remember setting up for the turn...(a left hand sweeper) pushing left, lean left... and rolled on the throttle... I remember about half way through the turn...I don't remember any pegs scraping or seeing any other vehicles. I was going about 35 when I went into the turn.

Apparently I blacked-out for awhile. I was awaken by a guy in a truck asking me if I was OK...I was about 15 feet before my bike... It was like waking up from a dream. I always wear all of my gear... but when I woke up I didn;t have my helmet or gloves on. I walked back up to the bike and saw my Helmet, Gloves, and Ear Plugs in a nice neat pile near the bike...I can only assume after the crash I took them off...

I refused EMS at the scene... But as soon as I got into ABQ I went to the VA hospital...to get checked out...

I am still here...I don't have a full assessment of the bike yet..I'll keep you posted...
