Csg,
Ping me at: Buelligan63@comcast.net
and I'll email you one for the enchanted circle that leaves from the hotel.
Let me know if it downloads into your unit ok.
My Garmin is an eTrex Venture, I believe Murrae's is the Harley/Buell Garmin unit.
the software should work for all the "garmin" units, i would think...

CJ,

Check out Jebediahs(sp), they have good BBQ and wings....

KKP

Kim, that makes it sound like maybe you aren't going. You are going on this rally, right?

ALL: This Sunday says HOG/BRAG TBA. Anyone want to ride? Anyone know what the weather is going to do? I'd like to scout some rally routes and I have a new tire to scuff up. (Thanks, Bart! That was $0.49 that I owe you, right? )

Let me know.

which holiday inn will everyone be staying at? There are two in Santa Fe...
The Holiday Inn, and the Holiday Inn Express...
I've been setting up my GPS maps to start from the Holiday Inn since I heard no mention of "express".

CJ,
Since you put it that way, you owe me $150.00. ;)

The weather is going to be raining, and I'm not riding anywhere, I'm packing stuff getting ready to move.
Anyone want to volunteer to help me move next weekend, on the 16th?

CJ,

Oh yeah, I'll be at the rally! I was just suggesting a place for you to stop and try out during one of your weekday rides.

I've got plans for a car show on Sunday, so no all day rides, for me. I may head out either really early in the morning or late in the day.

Bart,
Buddy. I'd help ya move, but I'm going to be in Telluride for the Blues and Brews. .

I just need to decide if I'm riding the bike up or if I'm taking the car. I'm leaning toward the bike, but I've just about had enough cold wet rides. I swear it took two days for my feet (I need better boots) to dry out and the circulation to come back after last weekend.

I'll be sure to have one for you guys too.

Kim,
You may want to give Mona a call, she may want to go to that Blues and brews also.
As for the cold, wet riding, my Buell boots kept me dry, and warm during the Deluge Mona and I rode through in Texas on the way home during vacation.
And electric vests do wonders at keeping your core warm and toasty.
They have them down here in 'querque at cycle gear...

OK all,
I Am from here, but I have a silly question. Where does the "enchanted Circle" run through?
What ride would you all recommend for a newbie? I think I have someone to cover my "Post" at work, so I am going to try and make the rides.

Brewtus,
welcome to our insanity!
The enchanted circle runs from Taos, past angelfire to eagle nest through Red river to Questa and back to Taos...
As far as what ride to recommend to a newbie, you have already ridden it, Hwy 14 between Santa Fe and Alb. Maybe you should try the Jemez?

the enchanted circle isn't that technical.
Beginning riders can ride it no problem, just gotta remember to ride within your abilities.

You do need to get a map of the state if you want to find some of these routes we ride.
here is the route to Jemez Springs from Santa Fe.

Happy riding!

Thanks Bartimus,
Looks like a very fun ride!
I will definitely get me some maps of the area. Thanks for the help.
By the way,
I think I saw Kim riding in front of my house a while ago. Bike looked similar.
Kim was that you? I think you were riding with another blue bike, maybe Yamaha? You were on SR14 heading south toward Madrid.

Hey Brewtus! Yup, that was Chris and I. We went down to check out the fair. Just got back and am getting ready to hit the hot tub.

We'll likely do the Jemez route to get to Abq. tomorrow. That is where the car show is, and we did 14 up and down today. There is also another track day down there tomorrow. I'm still not up to riding on the track but, I do want to stop by and watch some of the better riders again.

If anyone else wants to do Jemez tomorrow, let me know. 670.0938

Cheers

Jm-
I should have a few for sale in the Spring- New body work, full warranty, around $2800.

Brewtus-
The Jemez route is usually as Bart has indicated. The one for the Rally includes dirt fire roads for the Ulys.

Bart- The Holiday Inn is at Cerrillos and Rodeo- Kim posted the address here in an earlier post. You can also get it at www.santafebrag.com.

See you all when I get back

I did the NM Heroes Memorial ride today. There were about 200 bikes I estimate. There were 2 Uly's and my S3T representing the Buell market. We rode from the Billet Grill in ABQ, downtown, then up to the State Police training center..final stop in Santa Fe was at the National Cemetary. Nice day... Not nearly my normal ride...but nice to show support/rememberance...

I know Murrae is the New Mexico Rider's Edge instructor with the black Uly, but who has the orange one? My Brother said he was parked behind two Uly's with New Mexico Plates at the Hotel in Kansas City. I assume the black one was Murrae, but not sure of the orange one. My Brother is an Ohio instructor. Huge guy about 6'5", 270lbs, wears a size 15 shoe. His name is Mitch. You might have seen him. Anyways, just curious as to the owners of the bikes.

I did the ride today with me and my daughter. It was freezing.... I saw 2 other Buells near TP... Hopefully I will be able to make the rides at the end of the month... By the way south of TA, on the way to Abiqiue, there is a lot of road construction in the form of 8-10 miles of gravel road with "Motorcycles be Extremely Cautious" signs...

Yeah, I did the ride Sunday, too. I was at the shop from 0900-0945 and nobody showed, so I took off.

I rode up the high road and it was under construction much of the way. From SF all the way to Truchas was normal. Truchas to Penasco (basically where the fruit stands are where if you turn left it's to Dixon and right is to Penasco) was all torn up and what Murrae calls "pea gravel". I just call it super rough pavement, like they came along and scraped all the good stuff off and left the shite underneath. I was able to take it at a relatively good speed, though. Just have to watch. If I'm not mistaken, it was this type of road surface that Kim was on when she high-sided.

Then, from the other side of Penasco to the Rock wall was ok. However, at the Rock Wall, that whole road is torn up in both directions. I didn't turn toward Sipapu, but looking that way, it was torn up as far as I could see. I turned toward Taos and it's torn up all through the best parts, all of the twisties right up to where it flattens out before you cruise into town. Sucks. Again, I took it at relatively good speed, but don't know if newer riders would chance it, or even if I should have. That type of road surface makes it really tough to tell if there is "loose" gravel on the road, as opposed to the packed gravel that it really is.

OK, so then Taos was fine and I decided to go out to TA/TP since I've not done that route this season. It was colder than a well digger's butt out there with the wind, but I managed to reach maximum velocity for several miles of slightly hilly but straight US64 between Taos and TP.

From TP to TA, it starts out ok. Then a few miles in, there is a stretch of construction. The first few miles of it are that same rough packed "pea gravel" that I saw before. Then, it reached a part where they had finished paving both lanes and there was about a seven or eight mile stretch of fresh black asphalt with no striping, just those little yellow flappy things in the middle of the road. That was nice. Then there is a short stretch, maybe two miles, where it's a mixed bag of crap with patched areas in it. From there on, it's the same old road without modification, maybe from about halfway on to TA.

OK, so I gas up in TA ($3.29/gal) and head south on US84. Well, as JJ points out, there is a stretch of about 7 miles, not far south of US64, where it is not just loose gravel, it's DEEP gravel. Imagine riding on a beach somewhere well above the tide markers where the sand is soft and plentiful. There was a guy in front of me on an OLD Goldwing with a trailer who almost wiped out TWICE while I was following him. The problem isn't just the gravel, it's the cross ruts that the machinery makes while traversing the road, causes divets like speed bumps which really cause you to fly around like crazy. Definitely not recommended for group travel, in my opinion.

Anyway, after that, I came down through Espanola, cut over to White Rock, and then down NM4 through Jemez Springs. That route is standard and unconstructed so far.

Leave it to the state of NM. They don't pave any of our favorite roads for like 10 years. Now that they finally are, it's the same month that we're bringing in all kinds of tourists to ride them with us. Ironic.

PS: I got a "new" job that I started today. I'm the Director of Security at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa.

CJ,

Congrats on getting the "old" job back.
Thanks for the heads up on the route conditions. I guess the enchanted circle will be a no-go for the rally unless you have a Uoogly. : (

I did Hwy14 this weekend, between Madrid and Santa Fe there are about 5 spots where they scraped about an inch off of the road in these huge 20' squares. One is in a corner. : (
I guess they just couldn't leave a nice freshly paved road alone since we have riders coming into town, LOL.
Other than that, the road is nice.
Cedar Crest is still in good shape, and the stretch south of Tejeras to the Ponderosa is sweet...

CJ, Congrats, on the job!!!!!! So when do ya close on the new house?

It seems like they are moving really fast on the paving of 84. I came through there last night on my way back from T-Hell-U-Ride Blues and Brews(aka 3 days heavy drinking 10:30 am to 2am). There was only 2 miles on the south bound side that wasn't paved and 1 mile on the north bound side that wasn't paved.

So by the end of the month, it should be completely paved. They doing more of that chip sealing (pea graveling) a large stretch of the road just north of the Ghost ranch. It didn't seem to be too bad, most of the really loose stuff seams to have blown off the road.

I'm going to try to get Tuesday next week off to run a couple of the routes with Murrea.

Bart,

Is the ride for 10/6 to 10/9 still a go? It is getting really kinda cold up in CO. It froze three nights this weekend. Maybe if you are still planning a ride. We could pick up the AZ191 route??? Just a thought.

Kim,
I'm not sure what the scheduled rides are for those dates. I'm in Farmington at the moment, and have just been called off for an emergancy in Arizona. I may be back by Friday, not sure.
AZ191 sounds good though, Mona and I had a blast out there the last time we went out.
I don't want to freeze my azz of up in CO if I don't have to. (I'm such a wuss)
I also need to check my work schedule to see if I can get the extra day off for that weekend. : (
