Nuts,

Thanks for the info on the Ulys. I knew Shenandoah had two on the floor shortly before last weekend. I just don't understand why they keep the brand if the sales staff doesn't want to sell them, or can't sell them. Sorry I had to vent just a little.

Man you guys looked like you had a great time even with the broken bike parts.

I hope to get down Roanoke way on my bike before winter sets in. I seem to get to Lynchburg but can't get over the mountain.

NUTS, it was cool to run into you at breakfast up at Bluffs Lodge, sounds like you all had a great ride.

i got home late Thursday night, 25 days, 8103 miles, and 19 states (not including several altered states...) after it all began.

if you're interested, there are pix in the Storm Fronts "BRATPAC II" thread, and i just started a thread in the Tale Section called "BRAT/Matt '06".

after falling in love all over again with the BRP, me and my sweetie are half-seriously scheming about relocating to Virginia, and are presently looking at the general vicinity of Mt. Airy.

would love to get some feedback from some locals - either here or offline - as to what it's like to call Virginia home, housing costs, weather, etc., etc.

thanks in advance.

ride to lean,
Ferris

Mt. Airy is a nice area. My dad has a place on the BRP in Hillsville VA just north of Mt. Airy. They loved the mountains, but have moved back to eastern NC because of the grandchildren. However, he still has his place in VA. We're hoping to get up there and meet up with the VA crowd to do some spring time riding.

Come on Ferris - come on down to NC. We'll even give you a C3 decal like the one that's riding around on the Buell demo truck!

Jerry, I figure here is as good as any place to "give up the goods," as there are other posters with longer tenure in these here hills. Mt. Airy appears to be just east of the Blue Ridge and southeast of Smith Mtn Lake (The Lake). Having lived in flat, straight(roads),hot, humid, overpopulated South Florida for 28 years I found VA a welcome change. First assignment get yourself a "Virginia Atlas& Gazetteer," available on any online bookstore. There is no better, alternate throne activity!

My wife and I found the cost of living here to be very acceptable. We bought a 3 bedroom 2 bath house with garage, basement, and large yard for less than $150k. In S.Florida this would've been $350k! Ideally we would like to be in a more rural community but we've got time for that. We bought our home on our honeymoon in only 3 days. If you have skills there are plenty of jobs here but due to the low cost of living pay for unskilled work is low. My wife is a physician in residency and makes a salary unequalled in most parts of the country, while I make notably less than I did in FL.

Land prices I would guess to be between $1k-$3k per acre in the Mt.Airy area unless you get closer to "The Lake," where prices have gotten ridiculous in the last 5 years. Greensboro NC is the airport of choice round here due to significantly lower prices than Roanoke with a healthy offering of direct flights. Greensboro is 1.5-2 hrs from Roanoke so probably no more than an hour from Mt. Airy.

Bad news is state income tax, the depth of its wickedness I don't care to know. They take the most out the soonest so I can play with a check in February. Personal Property Tax: Basically you have to pay this for every vehicle you own. Based on the value and then relieved a certain amount. These payment are significantly higher in the larger cities! 2003 Toyota Tacoma value @ $13,000. I pay $200 per year in taxes on that vehicle alone. My wifes car, another $150. New Ulysses, $100. Living in the city and driving a brand, newest, latest hurts. I've never seen so many beater cars in all my life! Insurance rates are extremely fair. My house is $405 per year. Cars are $40 per month, Uly goes $500 for the year with all the bells and whistles. I just filled the truck up @ $1.95 per gallon. Oh Yeah!

Annual snow fall in Roanoke averages 20 inches. Not too bad and the boss understands if you can't make it to work. Virginia has over 1.5 million acres of public lands. My parents are looking to move to the Shenandoah Valley in the next year and I'd like to think we could find a way to get back here. My wife has to take a fellowship that isn't offered locally so that'll be two years away. I've already claimed my love for this land and if at all possible we'll find ourselves back in "The Commonwealth." Any more questions we'll get answered for you right quick. NUTS

Like VA, NC charges you each year for vehicle tax. If you live in the city limits, you will not only pay city tax, but county tax as well for your house each year.

Job markets are probably better around Winston Salem (just south of Mt. Airy) and Greensboro. Winston-Salem has some really good hospitals as well. My Daddy always went to WS for his medical specialist.

NC has one of the highest tax per gallon of gas. We are currently ranging from $1.96 - $2.38 depending on where you are. The coast was that much higher than inland this past weekend.

Our insurance rates are not great in this state in my opinion. We have a 94 Suburban and 96 Caravan and pay $95 per month - clean records, both in our 40's with no other licensed drivers. The M2 with liabiality only is $200/year and the Uly with full coverage is $1000/year with Allstate.

Winters vary depending on where you are in NC. We here in the east get much less snow, but will have a nasty ice storm or two during the year. Our snow is usually gone within a few days! After being in Green Bay, WI and Cincinnati OH, the snow here is not so bad! But beware, you cannot get milk or bread if they even mention the "s" word!!

Both states offer the mountains, beaches and several historical sites for weekend getaways or week long vacations. Best of luck on your search. Either state, you've got a good group of Bueller to ride with!!

Ferris, Mt. Airy is in NC. But we would love to have you down here.

yep, my bad on the VA/NC thing as it pertains to Mount Airy, but that's the general area that caught my eye on the way up the BRP.

actually, there's a bitchin' little brick farmhouse for sale at MP 190 (Orchard Gap, just north of the border), with two barns and 29 acres, but the price is way too high for our comfort ($295,000).

however, lust has now set in for this area, and Denise and i have been snooping around online, and asking questions here on BADWEB from locals, and are definitely "interested."

the NC/VA job market isn't applicable to us, per se, as we're self-employed, work from home (wherever that may be), and need only a high-speed internet connection to stay plugged in with our employer. (we're both medical transcriptionists).

really appreciate all the great feedback, thank you! the major draw for us is close proximity to the BRP, and all the cool little paved roads that shadow the BRP in that area. anybody have any direct experience with the Blacksburg/Christiansburg/Radford areas?

one of our real worries is humidity. where we live in SoCal you MIGHT get one day a year where there's a little moisture in the air in the morning when you wake up. is the west side of the mountains typically drier in terms of humidity than the east side???

how long is the riding season, on average?

thanks again for all the advice, and the show of friendship and hospitality, very, very much appreciated. who knows, we may be neighbors soon... : )

we're both medical transcriptionists

Do you know Kathy Rockel? She was president of one of the transcriptionists trade associations at some point in the past.

one of our real worries is humidity.

Then you don't want to live anywhere near the coast. Or even the piedmont. If you're actually in the mountians the humidity isn't so bad.

You should be able to ride all year. Feb is the coldest month and there will be days it is too cold to enjoy riding, particularly up in the mountians. But it is rare to have a day that doens't get above freezing, and rare to have a week w/o a day in the 50s.

Caution: The mountains seem to throw a wrench in every forecasters machine. Sometimes the storms break up on their way over, other times the valleys suck the moisture in for a quick wash. I generally ride year round; sometimes the colder months produce shorter rides though.

Christiansburg/Blacksburg/Radford is a beautiful area. We have a certain loop that runs us right through the heart of those towns providing innumerable thrills along the way. Can you believe you'd get sick of the BRP? Once you get settled and find all the roads that one has to play on here the BRP starts to look mundane. It closes in the winter too! I did however see a flock of wild turkey poults followed immediately by an adult black bear yesterday in the vicinity of Floyd.

Extremely local knowledge is best. There are uncountable tracts of land for sale should someone ASK. The pieces that are advertised seem to have owners and realtors conspiring to scam the non locals. If you can find a realtor who really KNOWS the area you should be golden.

I think I'll be headed in some direction hunting for sale signs next Sunday. Jerry, Denise any suggestions? It'd be a joy to ride those roads and jot down a couple of contact #'s. NUTS

Do you know Kathy Rockel?

negative. one of the things we like about our job is that we have so little contact with the outside world. we don't do the MT trade shows - it just isn't necessary for us. in fact, i've never even physically met my boss, and have only spoken with her on the phone maybe once or twice over the years. that's the beauty of working from home, along with the lack of commute time, and commute expense. plus, we can live anywhere we want, as long as we have a high-speed internet connection.

If you're actually in the mountians the humidity isn't so bad.

honestly, we'd like to live right ON the Parkway, but it's doubtful that we'll want to pay the prices they seem to get up there. that said, living as CLOSE as we can get to the Parkway, i.e. "in the mountains," sounds ideal, and sounds like it reduces our humidity exposure as much as possible.

the ability to ride all year isn't "mandatory," but since we presently live in an area that allows this, and love the ability to do so, we'd hate to move to an area that "shuts down" for extended periods of time due to the winter weather.

believe it or not, here in sunny SoCal (we live next to Lake Isabella, about 40 miles NE of Bakersfield, at the southern tip of the Sierra Nevadas), we routinely get overnight January and February temps down into the high 'teens.

however, it's a "dry" cold (sounds funny, but it's true), and about an hour after the sun comes up it's warm enough outside to recreate, be it riding, hiking, boating, etc.

thanks for the feedback! : )

Can you believe you'd get sick of the BRP?

well, that seems a stretch, but your point is well taken. that's one of the reasons i like the section of the Parkway near the VA/NC border, is all the beautiful little paved gems that criss-cross and parallel the Parkway along there.

as you know, the southern end of the BRP is much, much different, in terms of terrain (altho still staggeringly beautiful), and also doesn't have as much unfettered "side" access to the Parkway, i.e. all the magnificent "alternate" routes such as you find further north.

I think I'll be headed in some direction hunting for sale signs next Sunday. Jerry, Denise any suggestions? It'd be a joy to ride those roads and jot down a couple of contact #'s.

gosh, that'd be WONDERFUL! (and isn't it great to have such a cool excuse to go riding??? : ) )

Denise hasn't seen your part of the world yet, altho i've done my best to describe it to her, and i've shown her the pix i took of the farmhouse and the surrounding countryside at MP 190. that said, she's kinda relying on my instincts at this point as to what sounds "the best" in that area.

right now we're focusing in the general area from Roanoke to the north to Sparta and Mount Airy to the south. as i've said, we'd like to be as close to the Parkway as possible, but are not discounting the possiblity of hunkering down in one of the delightful little towns that reside along the Parkway in that area.

an old, well-kept farmhouse, with a barn and a little land, would be bitchin', but we're keeping an open mind, and could also easily live at 2nd and Main in some charming little mountain burg.

thanks NUTS! : )

Spruce Pine, NC is a popular place:

http://local.google.com/local?f=q&hl=en&q=spruce+pine,+nc&ie=UTF8&z=12&ll=35.929 927,-82.080574&spn=0.12927,0.346069&om=1

I don't know about VA, but the effects of people moving to NC has been interesting socially. Small town NC is very conservative politically and socially. Yet the state has drawn many retired hippies. So you end up with places like Ashville, and Pittsboro, which are small but much more liberal.

The conservatives make moonshine.
The liberals grow pot.

Your choice of location will affect the kind of neighbors you have.
