Hey Bart and all ... besides BRAG, is this the best place for chatter about the upcoming BRAG event?

Good pointers on The Pace by the way.

Kim, thanks for the info on the park. I had noticed it was reasonably close but didn't know if there was traffic from hell or any other reason not to stay there... When it doubt, ask the locals...
Has it ever stopped raining out there???
Scheduled the vacation today and will try to make reservations tomorrow morning...

See Yall in a few weeks...

Hey guys,

I didn't realize there was a New Mexico thread, so I was just hanging out on the normal Ulysses one. Thanks Bartimus for informing me. I will try to keep up with the local news in here now. I am signed up for the Sante Fe Brag ride. Are you guys all staying up there at the Holiday Inn?

I saw some dirty bike pics so I thought I would post the latest look of my Uly. Had to ride home thru a flash flood the other morning and I live in an area of dirt roads that now look like riverbeds.

Well, I think being the Assistant Director is a moot point. It's really not THAT organized. I think of it as more informal, despite the "official" demands of BRAG HQ. And you know that I don't condone squid riding either. I guess I just give people a few opportunities to hear where I'm coming from and change their behavior before I declare them unwelcome in my presence.

Kevin - don't sweat it. There's no ruckus. We're always like this.

I'm really looking forward to seeing all these riders at the event. I figure I'll get out on the road sometime between now and then to scope it out and report back on conditions. In regards to the rain, it has let up over the past week or so. It has rained unusually often and heavy during the time when it's normally dry. Now that we are into the traditional wet time, I'm not sure what to expect. However if you aren't from here, be sure to pack for cool weather. The elevation is over a mile in Santa Fe and will be up to 10,000 ft over some of the mountain passes. I expect highs in the 60's during the day up north and lows in the high 40's at night.

The enchanted twisties event seems to be shaping up nicely. We have riders from all over the country showing up. The dates are Sept 29/30 Oct 1. The confusion comes from the dealership event calendar which should be corrected to show both the state HOG rally and the BRAG Enchanted Twisties. The info lives at www.santafebrag.com. I have emailed Erik about attending with the riders from the band since they have a concert date in Albuquerque on Oct 1st, but he hasn't responded. If they do decide to attend, I'm going to keep it as a surprise.

I've ordered extra t-shirts for the late registrations. We have a "peak to peak" ride scheduled for Friday that is all paved but includes two fire road sections for Ulys on each end. On Saturday there are two separate routes. One paved that runs up to Taos and around the Enchanted Circle and covers routes that some of you will know from the Taos rallies of the past. The other a combination of paved and fire roads in the Jemez area. Sunday there are routes planned in two directions with the northern route running over the Brazos on 64. We're planning on riding the routes the two weeks prior to the event. Any volunteers for route checking should let me know when they're available. I'll be checking routes during the week since my weekends are eaten up with teaching and on the 21st-24th I'll be helping with the HOG event. I'm less concerned about the paved sections as as I am about the the fire roads for the Ulys with all of the rain we've had. The routes I've ridden lately are all in good shape, and hopefully the gravel we're seeing on some of the paved sections will be burned off by traffic. We also need to finalize the GPS info for those who want it.

As for safety and organization, I agree with both Bart and CJ. Safety is THE primary concern with group rides. I will print out the two articles that Bart has in his post to distribute with the ride info and set the tone for the event. As Bart states, these are social events and not track days. There will also be riders with each group who are familiar with the routes who can lead and set the pace. They will be acting as safety officers as well.

Any disputes or concerns about riders or safety can be taken to the safety officers and hopefully the issues will be dealt with in a similar style to the BRAG ride we did to Colorado in July- when one rider cut another off by passing too closely and not watching their mirrors and spacing, the situation was dealt with privately and politely and put to rest. If riders feel they need to ride at a faster pace than the group, they will be encouraged to ride ahead on their own. There will be rider meetings every morning to address these issues and to cover the ground rules for riding with the group. As CJ says, I want to give riders an opportunity to learn and change their behavior before I declare them unwelcome. One of the things we learn as RiderCoaches for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation is that riders need to learn from their mistakes, and communicating in a non-threatening manner supports that learning.

I encourage all of you to email me with your concerns and suggestions for group safety so we can have a coherent set of rules that meets everyone's expectations.

The only "reprimanding" I will ever do will be for poor attitude toward other riders and it will definitely be done in private. I feel there is never a good reason to embarrass anyone in front of a group or belittle them because they have made a mistake either consciously or unconsciously. These are social events and we need to treat each other with respect, especially if there is a mistake made. If the individual chooses to not learn from their mistakes and continues to display unsafe riding, they will be asked to leave the group.

I look forward to seeing you all- both old friends we've ridden with and new friends and having a great time riding some of the best roads in the West.

Good luck getting that red mud off the bike. I have washed mine about 4 times, and still haven't gotten it all off. If you find or have some trick for it let me know.

I've all ready washed it off once. We don't have the real red kind of clay around me though. More of a brownish sand. As far as wash, I only use Meguiars Soft Wash car wash on all my vehicles. The thick clear pink gel kind. Haven't had any problems yet. The sticky seat fabric is the hardest to get it out of on the Uly. High pressure is usually the answer there. S-100 works pretty good on motorcycles too, but tends to be expensive since it is only sold at bike shops.

Murrae,

Will the rides on Saturday be a one or the other event? I ride a Uly and would like to do the Uly rides, but on the other hand the only places I've ever been in New Mexico is Jemez and Sandia. I would really like to check out the Taos and Enchanted circle rides I hear so much about. See something new if you know what I mean. Where does the southern riders Sunday route head thru?

Thanks,
Joel

Jm- The rides Saturday are indeed a one or the other deal- the enchanted circle as mapped is about 285 miles round trip and with lunch will put riders back in Santa Fe late afternoon after an early leave. The Jemez route will go up Cochiti Canyon to Rt4 at the Caldera, then west to Forest Road 110 to Ponderosa and on into Jemez Springs and the Los Ojos restaurant. We will return to Santa Fe back up Rt4 on pavement through Bandolier National Monument. This ride is in the 150 mile range round trip, but will take as long due to the slower fire road speeds. The southern route Sunday has not been finalized at this point due to construction- we will have a route planned by the rally but it will probably be mostly if not all pavement. Probably down 14 to I 40 and then further south on 14 to the Ponderosa Restaurant (different from the Ponderosa on Saturday).

Either route is a gas- the Enchanted Circle is ALL twisties (ask CJ). The Cochiti Canyon and 110 fire roads are well maintained and not too technical and route 4 is all twisties except for the first and last 15 miles or so.

If you've never done the enchanted circle, you might want to take that route- it should be spectacular in late September. We can always ping you when we're planning a Uly dirt excursion- we can do the Cochiti/Jemez route anytime before snow- late October would rock.

We will advise a few friends about the KLR- excellent motorcycle!

One other question, will anyone have VDSTS available to do a TPS reset? I should be at 1000 miles or slightly over around time for the trip and might want to get it done. I really like the way the bike runs right now and I'm not sure if I should get it done yet though. Just wondering if someone will have it with them.

Route Update or Warning:

I rode the High Road to Taos today, over to Angel Fire/Black Lake, and down to Mora. They are chipsealing the whole route! Dang! There is loads - O - loose gravel everywhere! It is the first time I have ever ridden that road close to or at the speed limit and a few time well below. From the looks of it, they are going to be at it for quite sometime.

That and yesterday I tried to go down 84 from Chama to Espanola, they still have that road completely ripped up, no pavement to be seen for many miles. Trust me don't try it in the rain, it is like mud boggin'.

Damn. That sucks. The up side is that going up from Taos thru Red River and back down to Angel Fire is a sweet road. If we needed to, we could skip black lake. We could go up the high road, go around, then back out via Dixon and the low road. That last stretch is not as cool, but is do-able.

Regarding the lunch stop on the Enchanted Circle, it depends on the pace. I know a great little restaurant in Angel Fire that would be great. I don't know the name, though. That might be too far and too late. We might opt for Red River and I don't know a specific place up there, but could scout it out. I think I'll be able to go either tomorrow or Wednesday, but cannot guarantee either.

Any chance you would be able to e-mail the GPS routes in a format that Garmin's Mapsource can open (when you get it all finalized). Just in case a non-techno type wanted to down load them before departing for New Mexico. PS please also show the location of the friday check-in.
Thanks

Let see.....

The Roads- They are chip sealing in places-we were through part of the high road yesterday- but should have many routes burned in by the time we're there. I will ride the routes the week before to confirm. We're thinking of alternatives or partial routes and may combine the two on Saturday into one- we could do the canyon road to Taos, run across the gorge to the Brazos and back, down 285, across through El Rito to 84 to Espanola to White Rock/Bandolier and down through Jemez and back on Rt.4 to Santa Fe. There are some good Uly roads in there and that route should avoid almost all construction/chip sealing. We could lunch at the Los Ojos in Jemez. You locals (locos) let me know what you think.

The Restaurant- I'm open for ideas- there's the Bull O The Woods in Red River, several in Angel Fire. If any locals have a preference, let me know so I can set it up when we ride the routes. If we change the route as mentioned above, it will be the Los Ojos in Jemez.

TPS reset- We have a digital tech and scanalyzer here. I can do it for you at no charge. The check/reset is part of the 1k service.

Check-in/ gps maps- Check in will be at SFHD/Buell, 3501 Cerrillos Road and I will be there at 0800 with breakfast. The GPS maps can be emailed, but we will have a laptop and cords to upload into the Garmin Quest and one other Garmin unit. If this won't work, let me know an we'll arrange something.

I think that covers all of the questions and concerns- there are always great roads to ride here without construction, so I'm not worried about having a great time. Gee, if all of you road ulys the roads wouldn't be an issue............
I'm in Kansas City from the 6th-13th but I'll have my laptop and will check this site and return any emails.

I'm not to interested in the low road from Taos, it's too straight! The high road is the ONLY road!

As for the lunch stop, I agree with CJ, Angel Fire has a nice little place, the name escapes me also, but they cater to the two wheeled crowd and serve up some good vittles.

Ok,
Which Holiday inn is the reservations supposed to be at? The web link won't accept the bet group code anywhere. I called them both and they say they have no events for those days at the $79 rate or any group blocks for Sante Fe HD, BRAG, Buell, or any other possible name I could think of. Any assitance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Bartimus-
The high road is mostly fresh gravel chip seal- at least from Chimayo to Penasco and the new signs that were up seemed to indicate that they were going to extend the construction. We could take the high road to Penasco (10 miles of gravel) then go to Dixon (great road with new pavement and nice twisties) and meet the low road at Embudo and on to Taos. Basically I'll make the call the week before and if necessary report and let the group vote- it's everybody's rally. Not everyone is used to riding mountain roads, let alone if they are covered in small gravel. Safety first.

Yeah- the tubers are beautiful- remember we have two- but the Ulys are such better bikes that will go ANYWHERE and require no modifications to perform to expectations. Not to mention they will carry a ton of stuff effortlessly. I guess you only ride the CityX when you don't want stuff to fall off.

The Hotel- The Holiday Inn Santa Fe at 4048 Cerrillos Road, 505-473-4646, $79/night with pool, workout room, bar, restaurant, etc. The link on the www.santafebrag.com website is still active. Checked with them a few minutes ago.

Lets Rock!

I don't know Bart. I thought the Uly, was too cool, when I demo'd it. I just couldn't touch the ground and get the sidestand down once I was done riding it. Small problem really.

The High Road maybe just fine by then, but after last week, I'm a bit sensitive when it comes to gravel. My poor lil' bike will never be the same.

But, I managed to put 855 miles on it this weekend, may not look the same, but it runs just fine!

Dave,
thanks for the muffler, how much was the shipping?
Bummer you won't be able to make the ride. : (

I have ridden a few Uly's now, and I'm not impressed with the power OR the looks.
(the looks especially), they don't feel much stronger than my XB9.
I'm not interested enough in off-roading to by such an ugly thing, and I don't consider it a replacement for the S2/S3 platform.
If I want to go off-road, i'll take the XR600 out for a spin. ;)

Murrae,
My Garmin software allows me to map out the routes on the computer and then save it as a file to download into the GPS.
Do you want me to map out some routes and email them to you?

Kim,
Your getting to be a road warrior!
