Spike - several of the guys have talked about VIR and it was discussed during the last meeting.

I'll start a thread in the adventure folder so the planning details stay in one place and don't roll into archives.

BTW - where ya been?? You've been quiet lately.

Hey guys,

There's a new HD/Buell dealership ("Thundertower" Harley) that opened a few weeks back near Columbia, SC. I've tossed out the idea of trying to have a "mass meet" of Buellers at the dealership during their grand opening festivities which begin this Saturday and run for the next month or so. See my post here:

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=37&post=717406#POST71 7406

If any of you are interested in participating, please join the discussion.

Thanks,
Hugh

JimN and Oldog - you are too kind!

Okay its going to her head. Stop.

Actually the fact that she is not one for letting the guys show her how it is done, is one of the things that's most attractive about her.

Did you know that Kristi as a teenager put a drive shaft in a Road Runner which was in a parking lot, in the rain for a friend? I got there just in time to put the end caps on the last u-joint. Hey what can I say, she had fair warning.

She also jumped on the Drag strip with one of our cars and raced an old boyfriend that wanted me to race him even though I knew my car was too fast for his. So I put Kristi in our slower car and told him if he could beat her, I would race him. She took him at the tree and never looked back. She beat him by almost two and a half seconds and was only 2/10 of second off my dial-in time for the car. All this on her first pass and the car was a stick shift.

Another time I was riding with Dave our De-funked Directors in his Beautiful '73 340 Charger Rally. Kristi was in our Omni GLH Turbo following when we turned on an On-Ramp and Dave floored it. Kristi turned in behind us and started making up ground fast. She was pushing us down the entrance ramp when Dave said, "just wait until we get passed 100mph, then we will see." At the bottom of the entrance ramp we were running 110mph. Kristi pulled into the left lane immediately pull beside us, waved and drove off ahead and kept going. We never did catch her.

She would also get frustrated just like the guys if she could not get the car fixed. Ask her how the dash board on that Spite Fire got broken.

Speaking of frustration, Webe came over and helped me put the brakes and wheel back together. We have determined that we are not qualified to be the front tire changers for the XBRR at VIR. We put the wheel back together by the diagram in the service manual, mistake! The spacers were backwards and the tire was rubbing the left tube. So we had to try again and keep that axle tube in place while mounting the wheel for the second time to the bike which is suspended from some exercise equipment I have in the barn (And Kristi didn't think I would ever find a good use for it). So on the second attempt the rotor was against the right fork tube and we were confused since we tried the spacers both ways. We scratch our heads for a minute before I had the revelation to tighten the axle nut. That work well enough so we replaced the brake pads with new and finally put back everything together.

It was too late to test ride the bike so today I took it out. The bike ran great and no more rattle from the front of the bike. You can actually hear the motor and it is a sweet sound with the V&H exhaust. On the test ride I hit reserve so I stop at the gas station near home to fill up. So just when you think the saga is over, nope we are not done. No matter what I try I can not get this gas cap off. I twist the tab and twist the tab and it rattles but will not come off. I check the lock but no help. The gas cap is not coming off. So to not look any more foolish that I already do, I go home reciting some great words most merchant marines would blush over. I get home squeeze past the truck blocking my driveway and then start to remove the gas cap assembly from the tank. I drop the overfill valve in the tank and have to retrieve it by hand. I look at the cap, move the internals by hand and see that the seals are a bit dry and sticking. I think this is my problem so Kristi helps me and we condition them and put the gas cap assembly back on the bike. I try it and it comes off no problem, so I start the bike up and head back to the gas station. I get there and the (I'll skip the twelve adjectives I recited) gas cap would not come off again. The store clerk is giving me one of those, is this guy for real look, so I again go home with no gas. In the barn the bike goes and again I remove the gas cap assembly from the tank and again I drop the overfill valve in the tank and have to retrieve it by hand. So I take the cap assembly apart and find that this fine American motorcycle has a Taiwanese gas cap that has a plastic cam that locks the part in place. This plastic cam has a rounded key way and allows the outer lever to rotate without moving the cam.

So here is the great thing about Brankin. I am talking to him and he says I need to know more about the cap. I say its made in Taiwan. He says, "well good because I am looking at the plastic cam here and I have a few more." So sometime between now and then I will get up with Brankin and get the part, put the bike back together and hopefully be able to ride it again.

It is a sweet ride though. I put twenty miles on her tonight and it runs perfect. A few gasket leaks I have to address this winter, but a throttle response that puts the Uly to shame.

Rubberdown - I'll call you after I get to work. I've a few thoughts myself, which I'll post so you can mull them over before we talk.

The weather on Saturday is iffy, but the further north we go, the better our odds. If we meet in Greensboro or Winston-Salem and then head north into Virginia we should be good with the weather. Once in VA we can head West over to Damascus, then swing south to take us back to Asheville. We will get to run Shadey Valley, and there is a state park we get to ride through as well, which is just beautiful.

Through the park
Shady Valley

Have you ever done 421?

Yea, I know, but Photoshop is what I was after. I think I might get some great shots in October, but I know not all the group will be there. Maybe if everyone could email me there favorite shots of themselves, I could put something together and have the C-3 logo in the corner.

Hey Rubberdown and Jlnance...If you guys ride up toward Virginia on Sunday morning, I'd like to join in for awhile. Need to make a grits run to the Mill. I know a fun backroad route. Bring U4 with ya! Oh...the XB has never ran better. Runs a little bit stronger, pulls a helluva lot better through all gears, but OH so much smoother. I still haven't really whacked it yet. But, I'm very pleased. Seriously, I'll probably head up that way Sunday morning anyway. Give me a call or post. Later...

I just got off the phone with Rubberdown. Here is the current thinking. We will meet fairly early Sunday morning near Greensboro. Mike is going to call Twig to set up an exact time & place. Then we will head north to hw 58 over more or less the route I laid out this morning.

Carlos, hope you can join us. I believe the tenative plan is for you to spend Saturday night here?
