Mike,
We're hoping to make Silverton by 2 in the afternoon on Saturday. Perhaps we can meet there? We'll be doing lunch at the Handlebar (bar/restaurant) there in Silverton. It's towards the back of town and left one block.

If anyone knows Bart's phone number maybe they could give him a call for me. I just got into Pueblo but Darrell called and said that Dan high-sided over by Gunnison and is probably done for the trip. If he needs me to drive over there with the trailer to pick him up I won't be able to meet them in Silverton and maybe not Durango.

Thanks,
I don't think that he's hurt bad, they think at the worst he has a broken collar bone. They weren't sure if his Triumph was rideable since he broke a clutch lever and footpeg off of it.
Luckily they aren't too far away from where I'm at and I can run over with my trailer to pick him up.
I'm just waiting for them to call me back to see what to do.

Bart-

Sorry we missed this time around. The other guys headed home and the family didn't want to ride that far so we spent the night in Gunnison.
Here's a shot of my passenger and me headed down 149. Thanks for the shots of the Clear Creek waterfall. We might not have stopped if you hadn't given us the heads up.

Mike,
wow, sorry to hear about Dan, I hope heals quickly.
Sorry we missed each other. I didn't have my phone on, : (
We were in Gunnison for breakfast on Saturday, then headed west and stopped at Black Canyon.
That's where I turned on my phone and got CJ's messages. We got into Silverton an hour late, due to taking too many pictures of the snow. But I wanted to make sure I had plenty to post for my buds back in Phoenix. ;)
I hope everyone enjoyed themselves, despite the incident.
The weather certainly was on our side, and the scenery was spectacular.
I'm going to have to do this route again before summer is over! : )

I made the most of the trip on my own. Before we took off on sunday I rode up to Crested Butte, it was 32 deg.F, cold. On the way back to Gunnison I ran up a side road for awhile. I could see where a Ulysses would be a great bike around here.
The ride down 149 to Alamosa was great.
Coming back to Pueblo we took 165 from CO. City to Florence, what an excellent road! I'm glad that it was Monday and there was hardly any traffic at all.

I really wanted to ride from Montrose to Durango but that will have to wait for the next trip.
I'll post pics when I get a chance to shrink them.

Ok, well it took awhile to finally decompress from the weekend. What a ride!
I really had a good time, and once we got north of TA, the roads were great.

As a warning CJ, the road between Espanola and TA is under construction and is mostly dirt.

Anyway, Colorado was Beulltiful! We me at the Stealership, and rolled by 9AM heading north to Chama.
A quick stop for gas and we continued on to Pagosa Springs, and then up Hwy 149 to Lake City.

Kim in Colorado

Mona in Colorado

Is it going to rain?

It looked like rain, and we debated whether or not to put the rain gear on, but decided to press on.

waterfalls

we stopped to check out some of the waterfalls that Kim saw on the Lake City ride.

snow on the mountains

We started seeing some snow on the mountains.
Lake City was great, the hotel we stayed at had an awesome restaurant with it's own french chef. Great food!
Kim noticed a bolt on her clutch bracket had broken holding the top of the handguard on. Hmmm, time for a quick fix.

quick fix

The next morning we were rolling by 9AM heading for Gunnison. We didn't get gas, and took a chance.
My fuel light came on 24 miles from Gunnison. Whew! cutting it close. ;)
We gassed up, and had breakfast at a local diner. You could still see snow up at Crested Butte.
We headed west towards Montrose on Hwy 50 past the Blue Mesa Reservoir. The road kind of curves along the side of the lake, nice...

Blue Mesa Reservoir

Next stop was the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. This is a deep canyon, much like the grand canyon, only smaller.
I think it was 2700 ft from the river up to the top of the canyon.

river way down there

This is where I finally turned on my phone and noticed I had text and voice messages from CJ. After speaking with him, and finding out about the Iowa riders, we rode on into Montrose to get gas. We were running behind schedule to meet folks up at the Handlebars in Silverton, and it was HOT there. Almost 90 degrees, LOL. And with the snowy mountains for a backdrop, we couldn't wait to move on up the mountain into the cool air and around some more of those twistys.

snowy mountains

Everything was so GREEN, and the snow on the mountains, what a view!

Hwy 550 near Silverton

Silverton, CO

It was hard concentrating on the roads with such spectacular views, but we finally made it to Silverton, and met one of Kim's friends at the Handlebars restaurant.

Kim outside Handlebars

After a short stop for Iced tea, and some pics we started heading out of town, when I spotted this:

Antique snowmobile

I was thinking, "Ferris would love a pic of this" Looks pretty neat, I guess this is an antique snowmobile, eh?
We headed south out of Silverton down towards Durango. The road was great, the curves even better, and of course the scenery was spectacular.

Molass pass

We stopped at the pullout on the top of Molass pass to take some pics and enjoy the view.

We spent the night in Durango, and were back on the road at 9AM the next morning. I'm not sure which pass this was, it was between Durango and Pagosa Springs. But once again, the view was spectacular.

Colorado beauty

Talk about overloading your senses! Good friends, good roads, good weather and great scenery all made for a great weekend.
I killed many bugs along them Colorado roads.

bugs

And before it was all said and done,

941 miles

I had travelled 941 miles, with lots of smiles!]

I had a great time, and I'm ready to do it again... : )

All,

I am moving to Albuquerque in November after retiring from serving 20 years in the US Air Force. I have an XB12Ss and am trying to get the wife to sell her Suzuki 1200 Bandit for a Buell as well. We definitely want to hook up with you all for some rides. I'm a BRAG member with no local chapter here on the California Central Coast, so I'm looking forward to being part of an active chapter.

I'm also a track day ho and hope to hit Sandia Motorsports Park and Arroyo Seco with my Buell and my CBR track bike.

Well, that's about it. I wanted to introduce myself and start getting some advance info about riding in the "Land of Enchantment"...

Welcome Lee!

We generally have a ride every Sunday. Meet at the dealership in Santa Fe @ 9. This link outlines the rides the tentative schedule. It would be great to have some more riders. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=37&post=579321#POST57 9321

Also since you mentioned the track days, I think the next one is scheduled for July 30. You can check out smri-racing.org for more information. I know that that next weekend there is a race scheduled.

Again Welcome, hope to see ya on some rides soon. Cheers Kim

Hey Lee,
welcome to the insanity. ;)
you'll be getting here about the time the "riding season" ends. : (
but don't worry, some of us still ride during the cold months!
since your moving to 'Querque, I'll be able to show you most of the local roads close to town that keep me grinning, and when next "riding season" starts, you'll be itching to hit some of them roads up north that we covered with snow and dirt all winter.
The Santa Fe BRAG group, (Zia Thunder) Is headed up by Murrae, a ride instructor with Santa Fe HD/Buell,
and most of the rides are lead by the Asst. Director CJ. A nicer guy you'll never meet. All in all, a good group.

I didn't hear about todays ride before I left for Santa Fe on Saturday, and opted to go up to the Santa Fe ski area with Mona on Sunday. We went up on my white S2:

She went to the shop and test rode a few Buells and got her sling bag. Nice!
On the way back down to 'Querque on hwy14 I passed another Buell heading north. Didn't realize until we passed each other it was a city-x. Was that you KIM??? : )

CJ, sorry I missed your email, you sent that out at 1100PM on Saturday night? LOL
So how was the ride? We didn't get by the Stealership until 1100AM or so.
I hope you remembered to bring your camera! ;)

Well, I know it was really late. I meant to send it out a lot sooner, but the day got away from me.

Anyway, Kim and I were the only ones that showed up. Rather than do the TA/TP as the schedule listed, we went down 14, up the crest road, down to lunch at Ponderosa. I went back to ABQ from there and Kim back up 14. She is almost certainly the person you passed.

I got pulled over on the crest road, about 10 feet from the top. The cop was a US Forest Service guy in an unmarked Tahoe. I never saw him or remember passing him. Kim says that I was about half way thru one of those tight switchbacks when he passed me going the other way. She says she saw him point out the window at me, apparently telling me to slow down, but I was looking thru the curve and never saw him. I was pretty far over so paying attention to anything but the road is out of the question. Anyway, he didn't give me a ticket. Just gave me a lecture about how many kids they scrape off the mountain and how recklessly they drive, 70-80mph, passing up and down them mountain, etc. I just nodded my understanding and he asked me to slow it down, so I said I would.

There were a handful of other bikes up on the road, but the cops were determined to foil any attempts to enjoy the road. Too bad too because the conditions were perfect.

So Kim says she's doing some race school at the track next weekend. It's a full weekend event, school Friday night, track training Saturday, and races Sunday. $150. Makes me wish I had a spare $150.

The schedule calls for the High Road on Sunday. What do you think?

Wicked Twisty Tour

http://www.santafebrag.com/

This site is up for registering, but it is lacking content right now. CJ and I talked about getting some pictures of the rides to post. I know Bart should have some. I was also thinking about some google type maps of the routes. There are also some good links/info about the Enchanted Circle, that might be good to post. How about it, I feel that some info from riders in this area would be helpful

good ideas about the Enchanted twisties site! I would certainly be willing to donate any pics you may want for the site.
You can also just pull the pics off this thread. they are already optimized for the internet...
Also, the map idea is good, google has a satellite imaging map also.

Murrae also wanted me to mention on the board that Santa Fe HD/Buell is having a big sale until the end of the month on Buells. big deals on some great wheels!!!
I know the XB12's are going for less than $9000.

Well, it's the end of the model year. By the first of September, I'm sure they'll have the '07 models in and be selling like hotcakes.

In fact, if it's anything like three years ago when I bought my 9R, something big will be coming out. They released the 12's right after I closed the deal on my bike. I know they already came out with the Uly, the long, etc., but I just KNOW deep in my heart that there is another new Buell on the horizon. If it isn't an '07 model, it'll be '08 for sure. Maybe the sport tourer that I've been dreaming of, or maybe a liquid cooled bike based on the V-rod. We'll see, I guess.

The new mexican had an ad for the tent sale today and it had XB12S's for 7 grand, which got me thinking i could trade in the blast, put some cash down and have a small payment for a couple of years...

Then i checked what full coverage on a bike like that would be, and for a 24 yearold with 1 speeding ticket on his record, it was between 2500 and 4700 depending on who quoted me. It's as if they don't trust me to not kill myself and everyone with in 100ft of me.

And here i thought i might finally be able to start going on sunday rides again and actually keep up in the hills.
Apparently not.

as an aside if anyone sees a *stock* 2000 lightning for sale, let me know... especially if its black.

Alex,

Did you check with the HD insurance? If you are a brag member, you can use them. I also got quotes of 3K for insurance, but they found me one that was less then $500.

Regardless, you should come on the rides. The more riders the better.

Hello all.... I have been recently stationed in Albuquerque. I also just purchased a 2000 S3T. The wife and I are getting some riding in. I would like some info on local Buell clubs/rides. Can't wait to meet up with some fellow Buell's. The bike is currently down until I can replace the rocker box gaskets...they were gushing oil...but that should be a quick fix. }

Hey JJ,

Welcome to Albuquerque, and KAFB!
While there is not a BRAG group in Albq, there ARE alot of riders in the area. The closest BRAG group is up in Santa Fe headed by Murrae Haynes, one of the Riders edge instructors, and assisted by CJ, (Ghostrider) who lives down here in Rio Rancho. Here is a link to the ride schedule and also a description of the routes:
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=37&post=579321#POST57 9321

As you can see, there's a ride scheduled each Sunday until the end of the "riding season". Until you learn some of the routes, I suggest taking a ride east through the pass to Tejeiras, (i know that's spelled wrong) and go either north up Hwy 14 to Cedar Crest, or south down to the Ponderosa restaurant. Either direction is a nice ride and easily done after work, or on a weekend afternoon.

We also have some extended weekend rides up into Colorado and Arizona scheduled, I'm sure they'll be both fun and interesting.
Also, on top of all that excitement, we have a NATIONAL BRAG event coming up the end of September. The "Enchanted Twisties" should be a ride none of us miss.

Sorry to hear about the rockerbox gaskets, I hear that's a common problem for those years.
Ping me if you need anything or want any more info on the area. : )

Alex,
follow Kim's advice, there IS insurance out there for young and new riders, just gotta shop around.
I think the sale will last until the end of the month, and perhaps until the new models come out in July.

Yeah, it's cooler on the east side of the mountains, which makes it a nice getaway. :-)
I think this weekends scheduled ride is down Hwy 14 from Santa Fe, up Cedar Crest, and then down to the Ponderosa for lunch.

Hi New Mexico!
Wow, there's a lot of activity over here! That's great to see. Especially since nothing is going on here in AZ I'll have to get my backside over there for a ride soon. I'll definitely be at the Tame the Wicked Twisties event. Thanks for all that info on the vest Bartimus! I'm going to order one today. Maybe then I won't lose 5 pounds on a one hour ride here!

Have fun and remember,

Email from CJ
Hey all...

I was thinking of going on a mid-week ride tomorrow, Wednesday.
Anyone interested should email me or call me.

I was thinking of starting from Rio Rancho around 0800 or 0830 and
going up NM 4 thru Jemez Springs/Valle Grande, etc. Coming down into
Santa Fe around 11am. Murrae has some morning appointments but could
meet up with us at the shop around then. Then maybe down NM 14 and do
Cedar Crest, etc.

Everything is flexible, so let me know if you are interested.
CJR

Bart,
The ride on Sunday was good, we did the High Road to Taos. Had lunch and then took the High Road back to Fanta Se. We took some time to try and get shots of people riding to post for the Twisty Tour.

BTW, saw you and Mona Sat. on Cerrillos Rd about 4pm. Did you guys have a great ride?
I'm off to Denver on Sunday for two job interviews, so I won't be riding this coming weekend. But, I am going to ride the bike up to Denver.
