Hello All,

I'm taking the g/f up to Roanoke tomorrow. I don't know that I'll have any time to ride other than the trip up and back. But assuming I do get an hour or so to play around, any recomendations on where to go?

Also, it's always nice to have someone to call if things break. I looked on the rider assistance network page and found a Howard Miller listed as being near there. Does anyone know what his screen name is and if he is still active?

Nuts,
Now don't freak out but I MAY have to bail on tomorrows ride. I was reaching for a fork and threw my back out badly. I am hoping that it will be somewhat better tomorrow and the ride will loosen it up like last time. I'll call you around 2:00 to let you know.

Jlnance,
If you only have an hour take route 116 from downtown. Once you go over the mountain take the first right onto Boones Mill Rd.. This will lead you back to route 220. You can then take 220 North back into Roanoke. Provided you go at least the speed limit you should be able to complete the loop in an hour. If you do get a chance to spend more time riding consider heading out with us tomorrow afternoon (if my back isn't locked up). Nice twisty roads and wonderful scenery. Our trips usually take about 4-5 hours.
I don't know the fellow you mentioned but you are more than welcome to call if you have any problems while up here. Check your PMs' for my number.

Tank,
If I get the extra dough I may "rent" some garage space from you since ours willl be full and I ain't too keen on leaving the Bolt' outside in the weather.

Jim, the premier road around Roanoke has got to be 221 between Bent Mountain and Cave Spring. Although route 311 and 43 are some serious contenders. I'll Pm my cell #. Shoot me a ring when you get near and I'll see if I can run out and meet ya. Any ideas when you'd be "around?" All of the sudden I have things to do during the regular day hours rather than waiting for Mr. Bailer. HHAAAA. Reaching for a fork, where does he come up with these lame excuses. Jim, just give me a call anytime after 7am and I'll get a bead on your location and I'll see if I can line something up for us. NUTS

Cmon' Nuts! When I call and say I'm able to go I hope you have a little ridin' left in ya'. If not at least call before YOU head out so I can see how the back feels.
I know it is pathetic but that is the whole truth. Reached across the table to get a fork and almost fell in the macaroni salad. I did however manage to eat 6 cheeseburgers and 4 heaping servings of mac and cheese through my pain.
Thanks Tank! I'll try and help out with what I can. If the Treetops get too full I may not have any option but to come up with the money to rent a bed. I had thought about crashing on the floor but the more I think about it the more I worry it will hammer my back for the following day. Besides I like to stay up all night and watch tv which may be hard with 4 people in the same room trying to sleep.

That must have been some get together! Are you sure you'll be sober enough to ride tomorrow? I distinctly remember someone crying about ankle braces today.
I still got an ATV to get myself and my game out of the woods. Unfortunately for you it now looks like you will have to drag yourself and your game down to the main road (provided you don't flinch at the shot and miss).
Ahh, the joys of getting old.

Nuts,
5:00 in the am and the muscle relaxers have done their job. I am going to go out on a limb and tentatively say that we are on for the ride. Call me at 2:00 to wake me up.
You did get my message about Steve going along right? Try not to get sucked into his crazineness. Lets just have a nice ride and let him run at his own pace.
Until then rest well my hung over friend.

Nuts,
I reset the suspension to the aggressive setting this evening. Afterwards I was setting on the bike and rocking it back and forth while applying the front brake and noticed a "dinging" sound each time the brake was applied. I checked EVERYTHING up front and all appeared o.k. so I need you to try it on your bike to see if you get the same thing.
A bad day just got worse. Very rarely do I actually want to beat the crap out of someone but today is certainly one of those days. If I ain't in a better mood tomorrow I'll just stay inside to save the first poor sucker who mouths off to me a beating.

Ater doing it over and over for two hours I believe it is either the "floating" rotor or the wheel bearings.
When you roll out of bed and get a moment go sit on your bike with it in neutral. Roll it backwards and slam om the front brake. Then roll forward and slam on the front brake. Does it make a metallic clunk?
If not I reckon its' time for new wheel bearings which kinda sucks since the bike only has 6400 miles on it.
On a side note, including yesterdays' 120 mile jaunt I have put 742 miles on the bike since our tire/oil change bonanza. At this rate I may hit the big 10,000 mark before riding season ends.

The Lightning indeed has the metallic clunk. I've heard it since new and thought it may be the steering head bearings. I think you're getting plenty of miles in and the jinx will fade once we get another decent ride behind us. I think I might just go for a ride now. NUTS

Mine has made the clunk since new also. Narrowed it down to either the floating rotor, or the pads moving around slightly in the caliper. I'm leaning toward the latter.

Hey Guys, I just got back to Raleigh. I wish I could have met up with some of you all, but this was a romantic getaway with the g/f and there wasn't much free time. I really appreciate the phone numbers.

You all have a great city. It's been about 12 years since I've been there, so it was all new to me. The g/f had found a couple hotels online, but we didn't have reservations. The first one we found looked like a dive, but the second was
nice.

hotel

I guess being owned by Virginia Tech explains this guy:

They were very bike friendly too. If I'd taken the car, I would have had to pay to park. But the bikes got to park on one of the walkways out front:

bikes

And look what else was parked there:

Cyclone

I left him a note. He has Virginia plates, but I assume he isn't from Roanoke, or he wouldn't be staying at a hotel.

Later that afternoon one of the porters asked me what kind of bike I had. I told him a Buell, expecting him not to know what that was. Instead he answered "The Ulysses? I haven't ridden one of those yet, but I have ridden an XB9R, and I've got a BMW right now." I guess that explains the bike parking.

Later that night the g/f and I walked downtown to look for dinner. We ended up at a place called Metro. The girl got prime rib:

That thing was about 3 inches thick. It was a nice place.

It won't be 12 years before I come back to Roanoke this time.

Jim, glad to hear you had a good time. You happened to find the nicest hotel and the nicest restaurant in the city. Well, the restaurant is a personal preference thing. I know that steak had to cost atleast 3 tankfulls of premium. I know how good the food is there and I know it was well worth it! I haven't seen the Cyclone locally but it sure is a beauty. There are 2 S3's in that paint scheme. Maybe we'll be able to meet next time. How were the roads? NUTS

Nuts - The tip was more than I usually spend for a meal.

I didn't get a chance to explore any side roads, but I came in on 220. That was a nice ride, even though it's a fairly major highway.

Jim,
You should have at least called me and ole' Nuts and invited us over to the restaurant for a meal (on your tab of course )! Seriously though glad you had a safe and enjoyable trip. Feel free to drop on in here and shoot the bull with us anytime.

Tank,
Thanks for checking your bike to see if it did the same thing. The sound still bothers me but it puts my mind at ease knowing you and Nuts both have the same noise coming from the front end.
Even though it concerns me I just sayed screw it and took the bike out and thrashed it up and down one of our local curvy mountain roads. Brother, I was hangin' off that thing and whipping it into the curves like I have never done before. Looking back though I think riding in a bad mood isn't the greatest of ideas since I was pushing it faster and harder than I ever have before. By the time I got done my muscles were sore from slinging the bike around.

Nuts,
Just got back from the fair. OH MY GRACIOUS! There was hot, sweaty, nubile, half clothed, tanned skinned, large chested, platinum haired, juicy bottomed, nimble little nymphs all over the place.
Giggity, giggity, giggity!!
Where did I put my cantaloupe? I'M RICK JAMES BIATCH!

Charlie, I recall that now. I have talked to the owner of SD and recall he had a Cyclone. He said it was kept in Tennessee where his son-in-law mostly rides it. It would be great to see it being ridden back here. I've got a hankering that Seth's S3 will be for sale sometime soon. The guy who bought it just didn't look like a "lifer" to me. If it becomes available for a decent price I might be compelled to add to the stable. Good to hear from you and I hope to see you before too long. NUTS

Jackie, I've got to tell you about the Virginia Dragon. Hwy 60 from Buena Vista East to 29. Brother, it was SWWEEEEET! Made the wife carsick! Man we have got to ride that road before long. Can you call Tony and see if he is willing to sell the trailer for a higher price. Maybe for what he owes on it? Maybe we can contact the boss (wife) and see what she has as a rock bottom offer. Pops is having difficulty finding a suitable trailer for less than $6K. So you didn't feel the need to get all Mike Tysony last night huh. Let's plan something for this weekend buddy. NUTS

That my friend, is criminal! How would you like to be caked in mud and ridden around like that? Forget that question since you've probably done it in one of your Samuel Adams induced episodes.
Glad we didn't take Tony up on his fishing offer since the creek still looks too muddy for GOOD fishing. May catch one here or there but not the quantities you are used to.
Don't be hatin' just because I got an Alpinestar sticker on my fairing. Got a JR one when I bought the jacket so if you are nice I'll let you have it. You can put it on your psychedelic lid beside the bulldog.

Nuts,
You only wish your bike looked as hip as the one you posted a pic of. Nice chrome muffler, polished rim edges, sweet rear sets, shiny black plastics that don't have truck liner all over them (OHHHH YEAH I SAID IT!).
Talked to Tony and he sold it to his neighbor. The guy gave him some cash and took over the payments. Still doesn't have the title. He did mention he would like to buy the Bolt'. Here we go again! Something trying to tempt me into an 07 model and another monthly payment. I just can't escape it! The only thing is now that I have my official first scratch I can relax a little. Hate to have to go through the whole process again with a brand new one I still owed money on.
By the way, scored me two big ole' bottles of Plexus today.

Tank,
I was cruising along yesterday and something slammed into my front fairing. I thought it was a beetle. When I went to clean her up today I noticed there were no guts but a one inch gash. I was devastated. I used the sticker to cover it up so I wouldn't have to look at it and get nauseous every day.
As stupid as it may sound to you all I am thinking about ordering a new fairing. What can I say it is a sickness.
