Just as a reminder to this group; ride your own ride. Don't feel the need to "keep up". You won't be left behind, nor will you be picked on or teased for being the slower rider. Daddy is doing well. He's back to work, but still waiting on some test results. He saw his Nephrologist today and he thinks they may look at a stint in his left kidney. They are going to staff it will Urology and go from there. Thanks for asking. Are you going to make it out this weekend? I've got to see if I can get a sitter. MikeW - I love E-bay! That's the only reason Carlos got his first HD/FXGR/RG (can never remember the order!) jacket. I'm located in western NC and ride the Blue Ridge Parkway a lot and the Dragon/Cherahola Skyway at least once a year. Currently own a Sporty but looking for a Buell to add to the stable. Let me pick yer brains for a minute....Like I said on the main board, I currently own a Sportster, but I'm looking to add a Buell. I have found an X1 Lightning in NC, 2001 model with 6,895 miles for $5,800. V&H exhaust with PM wheels....looks like it's in excellent cond. I looked up KelleyBBook and that's the going retail for this model. What do you guys think? any thing funky about this year/model that I should be aware of? What about the price? Wanted to get some feedback before I called about it. Any help, thanks in advance!   M2nc Posted on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 05:37 pm:        Biker_girl - Welcome to C3. The X1 has advantages and disadvantages. It is the most powerful bike for the 2001 model year but it did have problems with the fuel injection system and a few other items that bikes like the M2 did not have. The price for the bike is not terrible but you can do better. Old tube frame Buells can be had for under $5,000. You can find XB9 Lightnings 2003-2004 for the same price and mileage as the one you have listed here. I do not know what you prefer, but the XB Buells are more reliable than the older tube frames. Mind you I say this, but I have an M2 with 43,000 miles that I just rode to Salisbury and back last weekend with no trouble. I also have the Uly and both bikes I would ride anywhere. I think you will find the smaller XBs easier to maneuver, but cramp in comparison to the tubers which lean you more over (Lightning X1 to Lightning XB that is). Also the XB9S comes in a low version with a 28" seat height if needed. It all depends on what you are looking for. For my trip to the Smoke Out, the M2 was the perfect bike. Allot of old choppers where a new XB would stick out like a sore thumb, while the M2's only worry was being swiped as a chopper doner.   1313 Posted on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 09:49 pm:        The 2001 X1 was a fine motorcycle. All of the idiosyncrasies of previous Buell's were eliminated on the 2001 models. The (lightened) flywheel weight was corrected, the shorter rear shock was OE, the cams were High Contact Ratio, and the list goes on and on. The DDFI problems were mainly when DDFI was introduced in 1999. My only personal 'beef' with the 2001 X1 is that it did not say American Motorcycles beneath the Buell lettering on the tank cover - all other years did. As Carlos points out 'The price for the bike is not terrible but you can do better.'. However, the X1 model has an advantage over all other tube framed Buell's except the Holy Grail of Buell tube framers, the S2, in the removable sideplate which makes belt replacement an undaunting task for even the least experienced wrench. If you are used to a low Sporty, I'd suggest trying the X1 on for size before getting too serious about it. The seat height is nowhere near the nosebleed Ulysses seat height, but it sure ain't as low as some other Buell's. The seat is slightly narrower than others for the rider, so that may help some. If you plan on modifying your future Buell, carb'ed bikes are a lot easier for a do-it-yourselfer to do as re-jetting is a lot easier than re-mapping, but with fuel injection knowledge entering the realm of the do-it-yourselfer this may not be that big of a concern. 1313 (Message edited by 1313 on June 28, 2006)   Southern Marine Posted on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 09:56 pm:        Brankin, if you ever need a hitch cover, I found one for you.   Southern Marine Posted on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 10:00 pm:        By the way, this is what me and the wife have been doing for the past week. Excellent bike, mine is same year, with the PM wheels to date: rocker box gaskets, HD kit key switch, Custom Chrome cylinder head temp sensor, HD Side stand switch. HD head light harness chafed ground wire repaired rear shock Ebay new I might add. PM items: head and swing arm bearings & dust seals Rear Isos the bearings were rough but could have been used longer exhaust studs (preventative measure) the o2 sensor intake seals I also changed the oil pump gear. as part of the PM I have never been stranded, the one thing if the air cleaner has not been changed, the suit case is quiet but it is not the greatest at keeping dirt out of the motor. As 1313 said its a fine motorcycle Brankin any info on the tire changing ritual, I have never changed radials what should be watching out for?   Jlnance Posted on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 11:00 pm:        Mark - Can you bring the ez outs over When I got my tire changed they told me they couldn't get the bolt that hold the front fender on out. I discovered later that ment they had rounded out the head trying. And I discovered tonight it ment they managed to get it a few turns out before rounding it out. I can't believe I'm drilling bolts on my new bike. I think it should be fairly easy to get out. It isn't rusted in. It's locktighted. They already broke the locktight loose, but it's still difficult to turn the bolt after you do. And they managed to strip the torx head out after getting it backed out about 1/8th of an inch. So if we can get the ez-out in there, we should be able to get it to turn w/o too much drama. Free tonight?   Rubberdown Posted on Thursday, June 29, 2006 - 04:37 pm:        Me and the boy have decided to leave Friday evening about 4:00 p.m. and try to camp at Flanner Beach campground in the Croatan Forest. Hopefully we will be able to get a spot, if not, then we look for ditch, culvert, or hollow tree. I've discovered that I can fit our 2 man tent, two ground pads, and a polar fleece blanket in one saddle bag. We gonna try to get into Beaufort really early to avoid the traffic. The parade of tall ships is a 9:00 a.m.. After we've had enough, we'll go touring. I can't wait. My cell is 910 783 5133. I decided to run down tengen road, which involved a discussion with an officer about why 40 in a 25 is a bad idea, and why one should carry their registration with them. BTW, there is big difference, when asked for your registration, between "I don't have it," and "I don't have it with me." In the end I was admonished to slow down and sent on my way. He said they were after drugs tonight. He did enquire as to whether I had any drugs on me. Do people really ever say yes when asked that? I did work on my bolt earlier. Drilling stainless is notably more difficult than drilling header studs. I drilled a 5/32 hole into it, which is what the screw extractor I bought said to use. I couldn't get it to work. The extractor wouldn't bite. While I was down there, I noticed that the other bolt wasn't snug, so I got out my new torx socket to snug it up. I tried to turn it and shattered the driver. So I now have an extensive collection of torx drivers, none of which fit the bolts on anything I own. I am at somewhat of a loss as to why the bolts that hold on a dinky plastic fender require so much locktight that heads are stripping and tools are shattering.   Aydenxb9 Posted on Friday, June 30, 2006 - 07:48 am:        Jim, the extractor won't bite into stainless, as it's the same or near the same hardness. Just keep up'ing the drill size until the head comes off the shank, but don't drill into the shank. Then try to turn the shank out with a pair of vice grips. If that fails, then you'll have to drill the shank out and re-tap the hole. I ran into the exact same problem after the "burnout" incident when replacing the front fender.
