Hey Pierre,
Welcome to the New Mexico thread and congrats on your purchase! I'm sure you'll love it as much as we love our Buells. You need to take a run up to Cloudcroft, and then head over to Ruidosa for some curvy roads. Lots of nice curves up on the Mescalero Apache reservation...

to those that didn't make the ride to Embudo station...
Too bad, so sad, but I'm glad !!!
What a Buelltiful day for a ride. I guess the "riding season" still hasn't started yet, it was only in the 70's, with clear blue skies.
I decided to ride the white S2 this weekend...

White Thunder

Ended up riding all the way to Taos, and met Mona on her way back from Farmington.
We stopped along the Rio Grande for a bit...

Nice Tail !

Everyone missed a nice ride, and some great weather! Let me know when this "riding season" starts, I'm looking forward to doing some riding. (that is, as soon as the weather gets nicer!)

ha ha hee hee ha ha ha , You guys crack me up!!!

I'll stop lurking for a bit. The ride along the Rio Grande on Sunday from Taos to Santa Fe was absolutely beautiful -perfect weather and not too much traffic. A "fair weather" rider's day for sure. So I have to wonder where all the Buell riders were???

Bart- Great Pix -your bike looks super there! Oh yeah, and RedKing looks real good too.

Sunday, was an absolutly great day. I was really bummed to not be riding.

I'm looking foward this weekends ride. I have even rounded up two more riders. Might even have a third, I'm still working on him. Great guys, even if they don't have Buells. .

They are coming from Espanola and Los Alamos, and would like to meet us at the corner of 84/285 and 503.

Bart, CJ are you going to make it?

OK, new update: Looks like our ride will be more full this week. The current lineup looks like: Bart, Kim, Kim's two friends, Kim Ingraham, CJ, Robert Dinn, Jim Mosher, Frank D'Augustino, Warren Peary, Larry Duran, Josh Meaders, and I got like five maybe's and left about a zillion messages. I think Pablo Sanchez, Luis Sanchez, and Nick Karnezis are probable.

Murrae says he now has some backup instructors so he'll be able to get off on Sunday more often. One of the calls I made is a girl who's in Murrae's class this week and will be up for rides in future weeks.

Robert Dinn got himself a job working at the Sandia Motorsports track and Tracy Riffe has been racing there really regular for the past year or so. Both said that next Sunday, the 14th (Mother's Day), is a track day there. Tracy is sending me info via email. They are having one next month as well. The ride schedule calls for Stanley Fire Station with the HOG group. Yay.

I will be out of town the 10th thru 16th and won't make it out that week. But, things are starting to look up for the group. Let's try to get some more of them out more regularly and maybe this will be something more enjoyable for all.

Cool. Hey, Pierre, you should come up and stay over on Saturday night so you can ride Sunday with us.

I just got a call from Tim LaForge, a Santa Fe Cop with a white 9R like mine. He is definitely coming out Sunday and is bringing two other Buellers with him. This is going to be a really nice ride.

Bart, Remind me to stop and take pictures once in a while!

Hello all...

I called and spoke to many of you yesterday, left messages for those that had a machine, and nothing for those that didn't or I didn't have a good number for. I'm trying to update my list of contacts and would appreciate everyone getting back to me with updated phone, email, the fact that you still own and ride a Buell, etc. (You can also include the name, number, and email of any other Buellers you know that aren't on this list.)

As mentioned yesterday, we are having a ride this week. We will meet on Sunday, May 7th, at 0900 at Santa Fe HD/Buell. Those coming up from the Albuquerque/Rio Rancho areas can meet us at the McDonald's in Bernalillo (I-25 exit 242) between 0800-0815 and ride up together. Once assembled, we will head out of Santa Fe and take the High Road to Taos. This is a nice scenic ride which I'm sure nearly everyone has done at least once. However, since they finished the construction on the lower section, it is really beautiful. We'll grab some lunch in Taos (location TBD) and then select a scenic route to return. US64 to Angel Fire and then around the Black Lake area to Mora was suggested.

I'm attaching a list of all our upcoming rides. There currently is a ride each and every Sunday, with a few overnight out of town rides sprinkled in. Some of it looks repetitive because it is. There's only so many places we can go on a day ride. Thanks to Bart and Murrae Haynes for putting this list together. I'm going to be working with both of them to update the list as we get feedback from many of you.

Next week, May 14th, is Mother's Day. The ride list says we will be going to Stanley Fire Station with HOG, but that's not going to be any fun for us. So, instead, some of you may be interested in a Track Day at Sandia Motorsports Park on the west side of Albuquerque. Robert Dinn works over there part time and Tracy Riffe has been racing his Suzuki GS1100 there for about a year and a half. Both have said that the track day is going to be really great. They will do another in June, but I don't have the date on that just yet. Cost is $65 per person who wants to get on the track. (I'm 99% sure you need to bring your own set of full leathers.) This time it's sponsored by Sandia and Santa Fe BMW dealers. We've talked about trying to organize a Buell sponsored track day, but I think that'll be difficult as long as we continue to draw single digit attendance for our normal rides.

SO... with that in mind, please come out and ride with us on SUNDAY!

Also: some folks are not able to make the Sunday rides due to work schedules, Murrae included. So, for those folks, I'm going to organize at least one mid-week ride each month. It will be on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday and will be a nice full day of riding. Murrae and I went around the Enchanted Circle last week on Wednesday, and it was awesome. No cars, no cops, no other bikes, and only one deer.

Enough rambling from me. See you Sunday.
CJ Rodden

WOW, that's a mouthfull, thanks CJ.
I'm up for any route back, as it's all going to be new for me, I'm sure.
I think you should plan on stopping every 50 miles or so for pictures, pick any available overlook with a good view. I want some pics, and obviously you do too.

As for the following week, I know Kim was interested in a track day, and Mona may be also. Me, I'll just watch and take pictures. I've spent enough time on racetracks in my lifetime. ;)
Now do they require a FULL set of leathers? ie; one piece? Or are Ballistic two piece riding outfits accepted?
We'll need to find out as most riders don't have actual leathers. (except CJ) : )

Looks like a good group getting organized for this weekend, perhaps we can get them more involved with this message board also...

Oh, does this mean that the riding season is going to start soon?

I would have gone last week but the board was quiet about an ride actually being planned. Instead I went from santa fe, to los alamos, through the jemez, down to abq and back up i-25 by myself. 210 miles in total (my longest ride in one day so far).

I'll be there this sunday, with a full tank of gas.

Does anyone know what the dealer's policy is on a 150 mile test drive ; ) specifically the bikes with gold rims?

Nice turnout today! Was good meeting everyone, and riding that High road to Taos. Nice road! Need to do that one more often, wish I could have ridden back that route also, but... Had things to do.
Here are my pics from today...

Thanks again to everyone that showed up, it was pretty good.
Still need to work on those group riding skills. NO PASSING in the same lane!
Perhaps next weekend we can do the trackday out at Sandia?
It is Mothers day though, so I imagine most of the guys will be busy with them "honey-doos" ;)

Bart & Robert dancing to express their joy!??

As you can see there was a lot of picture taking today.

Good ride, only one bike had some trouble with the fuel line on the last leg heading back to Santa Fe.

See ya guys next time.

Cheers
Kim

PS Bart; My vote is for the track day next weekend. Thanks for the info.

I think I made a mistake and scheduled myself to be driving a chase truck for a Baja 500 competitor that weekend... If I did I'll be kicking myself the entire weekend thinking of running 191 with all of you...

We were setting up our schedule and accomodations for the Springfast. It looks like you are riding just Sat. & Sun. spending the night in Gunnison?
Darrell, Dan & the boys are going to come out Wed. the 31st and take off on the bikes Thu. 6/1, leaving the truck & trailer in W.Pueblo. They are going to ride around the Durango, Siverton area and probably meet up with the group in Gunnison.
I still am not sure what I'm doing considering what my son decides. I'd like to come over & meet the group too if I can make it work.

Mike,
the schedule is for 3 days, Fri, Sat, and Sunday. the route takes us out of NM and into Co up through Pagosa springs, to Lake City. I'm thinking of overnighting there, and the next day, Sat, up through Montrose, down through Silverton, and overnighting in Durango. Sun, leaving Durango, heading east thru Pagosa springs and back down through Chama, NM and on into Santa Fe...

Total mileage for the trip is around 850 miles in 3 days. : )

Hi New Mexico Buellers!
Looks like you all finally decided to start riding again. You might be getting to the 70's there, but it's hitting over 100 here in Phoenix daily now. oh well, that just means you go faster for better air flow!
Bart, you must be tickled pink with all those Buell riders! Well have fun and maybe I'll come over for a weekend ride with you all sometime soon.

Have you thought of where to stay yet? Darrell is itchin to get reservations so if you want him to choose the place I'll let you know where he picks. We have a Brag meeting Tue. so we can talk about it then.
We may not be to Pueblo until Fri. so we'll try to get down and meet up with Darrell's and your groups in Durango. I wouldn't have a problem riding over to Lake City Fri. but the rest of my group may not be up to it.

Don't know, the forecast looked too cold, so I opted to go to AZ and run HWY191.
Turned out there was an iron butt rally going on so we got to check out their bikes and shoot the breeze with them.
I tried not to be a rude, azzhole, honest! Also, there was a Phoenix sport rider group doing the road on Saturday from the south. We did end up seeing most of them on our southern leg.

There was a group from Phoenix that came up Saturday morning, this was some of them.

Just some of the curves

We opted to ride both directions on Saturday, south down HWY191 to Morienci and then turn around and come back up to Alpine.

Beautiful weather, great curves, and good riders made for a fun weekend. Kelly, great seeing and riding with you and Lissette again, we look forward to the next ride!

I was the only one who went to Lake City from here. The weather turned out to be great, just about the perfect temp.

Since I was heading up alone, I opted to hit Pagosa Springs on Friday and then ride sat. over the Wolf Creek Pass to Salida to meet up with the Denver BRAG guys.

Wolf Creek Pass, even with the snow around it was really nice.

The restaurant where I met up the Denver group.

Lake City is just a beautiful area.

A couple of the riders missed the turn off to the waterfall, but here is most of the group. They are a blast to ride and hang with.

I'm looking forward to seeing them all again for the Twisty Tour Weekend.

Well, Red River was interesting. I'd never been to the rally before, so it was neat to see the thousands of bikes and associated characters milling around. NMSP had a fleet of their new Beemers out. It was more like they were parading rather than patrolling. They rode in a pack with lights flashing, etc. Sorta funny.

So we left the shop with four Buell's, two Harley's, a Honda, and a Yamaha. Murrae, Mabel, Conway, and I along with a bunch of folks I didn't know. So when we got to Taos, the guy on the Yamaha dropped off. Apparently we were going a little too fast for him. (It's his first bike, two weeks old.) Also, the couple on the big dresser dropped off too. I was ok with that since they chose the first gas stop as the perfect spot to start drinking beers. The rest of us drove on to Red River.

We hung in Red River for a couple hours, eating, shopping, etc. Left about 2:30 to get to Angel Fire. We were due to stop at the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial since some folks had apparently said they would hook up with us there, but I didn't see them. After a short stop there, we gassed up in Angel Fire and headed off toward Mora via Black Lake.

That stretch was uneventful, despite my continued uneasiness on that unstriped, narrow, twisty, knarled section in the woods. After a brief stop in Mora, we were off again, which is good because it was getting late and I was hours from home and behind schedule. So, pulling out of Mora and up the mountain road, we started really moving. Down the other side and thru the sweepers the pace was very brisk. I was in front with Murrae and Conway following closely. Not far behind them was the dude on the ST1300. Mabel was bringing up the rear with a guy on a Sporty (I think... all Harley's look the same to me.)

So anyway, as we start up the next set of mountains getting close to Sipapu, the guy on the Honda starts dropping back. At a certain point, we were just so far ahead that we didn't see anyone. So, we stop at the Rock Wall and wait. Murrae sees some dudes he knows and starts talking. Me and Conway are just milling around. Before long, I realize that we've been there what seems like a long time without them catching up. I ask Bill about it and he says he is also getting concerned.

A little car pulls up and tells us that someone crashed about ten miles back and are we waiting for them? Yes. She describes them and sure enough, the guy on the ST1300 went down. They say he's ok, up walking around, etc., but obviously, we're going back. So ten or fifteen minutes later, we're there. NMSP and Mora County are on scene and the ambulance is just pulling away when we arrive. Apparently, as he was going around an uphill left handed curve, he was carrying too much speed and started to drift out to the right. I suspect he sorta fixated on the overly large run off area (which was full of slate looking rocks) and he apparently told Mabel that when he grabbed the brakes, he was already in the dirt, so skidded out and low sided. The bike apparently flipped and was looking pretty broken up. The guy had a knarly looking scrape across the front right of his helmet, so good thing he had it on.

One of the guys said he had a gash on his wrist, was limping around with a badly injured ankle, and could possibly have broken some ribs. All in all, it could have been a lot worse.

It was this guy's first group ride and while I don't know how long he'd been riding or riding that bike, I did hear him say early in the day that he'd gotten back into it after years of not riding. In my mind, it reinforces what we say all the time, and in fact said many times that day: Ride your own ride. It's no use trying to keep up with guys that are riding faster than you should be riding. Just go your own pace and you'll be sure to get there in one piece, although that might be five or six minutes after the front group.

So, then it took me FOREVER to get home. I don't know why but the clock sped up and our tires slowed down. It seems like it took me three hours to get back after that.

Oh, and I forgot my camera, so no pics. Sorry.
Hope to see you all next time!

Darrell, Dan & the boys are out there now. They are going to reverse the route Sat. and hope to meet you along the way. Otherwise they'll meet you at Days Inn in Durango. Since the boys are new riders they wanted to take it easy on them.
We'll leave Pueblo W. on Sat. and run over to Durango and hopefully meet up with everyone.
Have a good ride and hope to see you there!
