For those going to Summit Point from points North:

We'll be meeting @ HD/Buell Frederick @ 8:30am and departing NLT 8:45

Please make sure you've had your Wheaties, are gassed up (fill your tanks - no smart ass comments please) and ready to go.

Bring $15 for admission to the track.
Try to wear you best Buell gear to show support for our fellow Buelligans racing Sunday.

Am I missing anything?

It was a great Saturday for a ride and watching some racing! Got to meet Jose, and a couple of other Buellers. Thanks to Ramon for organizing the ride from Frederick and to Pete for some great pix (until his camera did the electric slide right off the shelf). A couple of the Buells did really well in the races and it was nice to put some faces with the names.

I will be at Summit Point on Saturday for a track day and a couple more will be there on Sunday.

That was a fun weekend for a race geek like myself. the only bummer was getting wet on the way home but I did not get completely soaked so that was cool.

We had a decent Buell turnout, great job by Ramon rounding up his Frederick gang, glad you liked Sandy Hook road, it's one of my favorites. It was great meeting everybody finally!

Nice to see all the Buell riders duking it out on the track. Thanks to Keith (BuellRcr), Pete A, Art and crew, Patrick and his brother Pete, the Dunn brothers, Jeff Gouchenor, Bryan Bemisderfer, the Rozynski brothers for giving us a great show and the hospitality in the pits. If I forgot your name, sorry!

I hope Pete (Blublak) can get his camera fixed that was a major bummer.

Many thanks also to Nate Kern for an awesome riding display on his BMW's and Battley Cycles for the free food.

Memorial day will ge awesome!

Spread the word, plan on being there!

We should coordinate where we should meet at the track, probably at Turn 9, which is right in front of you and to your left after the entry gate.

Looks like rain this Saturday, so our next ride will be May 20th.

If you have a route you'd like to lead, feel free to do so, just let me know so I can pass it along.

If not, the next ride I have planned will be to the 6(?) covered bridges of Frederick Co. It's approximately 2.5 hrs and includes riding through the Catoctin State Park.

I'd like to check this ride out next Tuesday or Wednesday if anyone's interested.

I just met and incredibly nice lady (Cindy) that provides a great service to us riders: leather repairs and alterations. She's located in Greenbelt and I believe does leathers alteration for Battley Cycles.

I just turned in my jacket to have the main zipper replaced and a seam re-stitched. Cindy said she can have it ready tomorrow with an upgraded zipper all for $50! This is absolutely fantastic considering the HD shops, taylors/seamstresses and dry-cleaners all stated the best turn around time they could offer was 2 weeks (6-8 weeks for HD). Prices ranged from $30-$75 just for the zipper.

I'd post her info here, but I'm not sure what the policy is regarding promotion of non-sponsoring businesses. If you need your leathers or jackets repaired let me know and I'll give you her info or call Batlley Cycles (motor-clothes dept.) in Rockville.

Blublak, Jose,

I hope the weather holds out for you like it did for me today. Weather was great, not a drop of rain, and the day was AWESOME!

First, there were only about 20 riders total, maybe 12 for the White group. You pretty much had a clear track and virtually no traffic. Plus, they only ran 2 groups (white and ART Basic then red and blue together) so you were on the track basically twice an hour! A lot of track time and personal attention from the instructors.

Second, the track is tremendous. It is very technical, and physically demanding. It was a little intimidating at first since there are soooo many turns, and your wondering how in the hell am I going to remember the turns/lines etc. But after a couple of sessions, it falls into place and is an absolute blast to ride.

Hope you guys have as much fun as I did. I'm checking the schedule to see when they're doing Shenandoah again!

Mio

The good news: I was having a blast, I was going fast and I got bumped up to Red (Intermediate), and I was not getting passed that much....

The bad news: I got greedy and went out without taking a break at the end of the day and ended up going down.

What happened is that the track was opened up to everybody at the end of the day because of the on/off light rain and the smart people going home so nobody was going out on the track.

I had just come in from my Red session, and they said anybody could go back out, so I did, without taking a break.

The good news: I was on my SV, not the Buell

The Bad news: Destroyed the tach/speedo, two dents in the tank from the handlebar, bent shifter and lost left peg and clutch lever.

Good News: Helmet, back protector & leathers did their jobs

Bad news: Destroyed my favorite helmet (the Suomy Bostrom Laguna Replica) and have a rip/hole in the back of the leathers.

The good news: no broken bones

The bad: really sore right thigh/left ankle head/neck/hip/elbows

The Good news: Linda's in Italy till next week, she has not found out yet.

The BAD news: Linda's in Italy till next week, she has not found out yet.

I'm pretty sure this is where I went down. Pete had a better view and remembers what happened, I don't remember going down. I think I hit the slick area in that turn with my rear wheel as I was flipping the bike over from right to left and went over the left side of the bike.

Hey Mio.. Give a guy a break.. I just am now working on getting back into the 'regular' world again..

Ok, Sunday. Early it was raining pretty hard at my place, which delayed my departure. However, after only a few miles it started to slack off, then went dry as I got within about 35 miles or so of Summit Point. Jose called me to make sure I was OK (like I said, I was running late) and when I arrived, the pit area was pretty sparse, a lot of folks had canceled expecting bad weather.

We set up, checked in and got ready for the day. Jose on his SV and I on the XB9R (now with Drummer SS). The crowd was so small, that once again, it was divided into two groups. ART/White and Red/Blue. Wow, Shenandoah is a technical work out! Man, several blind turns, (we ran it the reverse of the CCS with no chicane in the middle of the main straight) quick elevation changes and that off camber up hill left into the downhill right was a killer (more on that later). Right off the bat, I think we had two folks go down, they were trying to cook along on cold tires, cold track and possibly no knowledge of what was coming up. Lucky for us, they both ran off so it just yellows, no reds. Jose was soon flying around the track, passing folk's left and right and running like a bat out of hell!

For me, I already know I'm slow, so I wasn't really worried about his passing me, besides, Jose is a very courteous passer and unlike a few of the guys that were there, he never tried to 'squeeze' in (on me at least) forcing me to either change lines or back off my ride earlier then I had wanted.

The groups were running 20 minutes each so there was a lot of track time compared to their regular days. This was actually really good, since it gave me a lot of time to work out how I wanted to ride the 2.1-mile circuit. I was surprised to see several patches on this 'new' track. But for the most part, it's all a very a nice place to run.

Starting on the main straight (even though we had pit-out elsewhere) let me try and take you through it... We'll 'number' them accordingly..
The main straight is a good long stretch of slightly curved road leading to (T-1) a narrow, think paper clip, 180* left, then a short straight that's slightly up hill and into (T-2/3) a true double right that is actually down hill for (T-2) and Uphill for (T-3). (The 'flat' of this turn is where pit-out was), a short twist (T-4) to the right and a slightly increasing radius left at the top of the hill (T-5) and you're onto flat ground for a short straight. Then it's a full 180*+ Double apex left (T-6/7) that once again goes up hill, and leads to a blind left/right. You have to make sure you're aligned right before you crest this little hill and suddenly drop several feet, (T-8) making a fast left (T-9) right and onto another short straight (during CCS, when coming the other way, there is an extra turn thrown in that we didn't' use) and into (T-10) a kind of odd right once again heading slightly up hill through a gently right curving straight. Under the bridge and it's a (T-11) jog right, then up hill, (T-12) off camber left that you really need to pull hard around. Just past the apex of this left it drops down again sharply and cuts back right. (T-13) Just off the curb on this down hill right is a patch that's a bit rough and you either go inside it (against the curb) or outside it. I was running inside as much as I could since (still descending) you flop over into a (T-14) left and onto a slighter grade portion that has an increasing radius left opening onto the main straight (T-15). If you hit this right, you can carry a ton of speed onto the straight and begin your shot down hill to T-1. All in all, there isn't that much time to relax on this track, but it is a rush when you get the timing down.

Now, good news, Jose got bumped up to Red group! (Told you he was fast)

I had a few pucker inducing moments, but all in all feel I did well. For the first half of the day I had been plagued by this guy on an R6 that would blow past me in the straights, then hang me up through the turns, and just as I was getting close enough to pass him, he'd be on the straight and would run away from me again. Finally, I thought I'd figured out his timing and could get by him. On the main straight a 'coach' flew past me and dropped in right behind the R6. I made the turn (T-1) and by the time I reached (T-3) I was on the coaches tail. Pulling through (T-4) I poked my nose up the inside of the coach (who was watching Mr. R6) and let him know I was there. As we came out of (T-5) the coach signaled me to go and I rolled on hard in third (damn, that Drummer has a great 'roar' to it) and was almost on top of R6 by the time we dropped through (T-7/8/9) I was closing fast and could almost read the lettering on his helmet, I fell over for (T-10) and rolled on hard, as he went wider for his approach towards the bridge, I hammered it and slipped under and into (T-11) a bit hot, I clamped down and hauled it down for that off camber (T-12). Not sure what happened to R6. I was half expecting him to blast past me on the main straight, but as I came into (T-1) I hadn't seen him yet. The session ended on that lap so I came off track (I think he was like two bikes behind me at pit out, but I'm not sure). Yeah, I'm feeling pretty good about that move.

On the next session, I was actually knee down in (T-13) with my puck running along the curbing when all of a sudden my knee bounced up violently, shaking me up for a moment. Later, I took a look.. There is a patch in the curbing there, and that's what I hit with my puck! OK, minor pucker moment there..

I rained at about 3:30pm as I was just coming through (T-12) and didn't see the red flag till I was entering T-1 and did a lap in the downpour. (T-13) was slick like someone had spilled oil on it and even at very low speeds it felt nasty. I rolled off the track alone, with a couple of the 'officials' looking at me and shaking their heads. My reply.. "Hey, I'm a Bad Weather Biker!"

After the rain stopped I decided I was tired and didn't want to push myself since I'd be back the next day. Jose went out though and was riding well. They had so many people leave due to the rain that they had shifted to an open track. I saw Jose come in briefly and head right back out (I was over at the TPM trailer) and figured I'd change and wait to help him load up as well.

The bad news... As I was just starting to load everything back into the truck. I heard someone go down in (T-13). I started looking for Jose.. A bout a minute passed and the red flags were out and no Jose. Damn! I hopped on my bike and rode over to the wall.. Sure enough there was his SV laying in the track. About twenty feet from there was Jose, kneeling on the track talking with the Para-medics. They got him up and into the ambulance as the trailer came over to pick up his bike. From talking with Jose and a couple of the others there.. Here's what I know. He's fine (just probably really, really sore). He must have hit that slick patch and his rear came out a little, then it caught and he high-sided hard. He took a serious shot, since I was told that he lay on the track for about thirty seconds before he moved and never got off the track until the medics arrived. We're guessing he was knocked silly when he hit. His lid took a good shot and is now relegated to a wall ornament. I'm sure he'll be in here soon enough to give us his take on what happened.

Ok, that's all for now, I'll tell you about Summit Main - Monday - Later.

Wow! A lot more excitement at your day than mine. We had one flag the entire day, a red at the end of the day. Other than that, it was super clean (weather was cooperating as well).

Jose, hope you're ok and the bike will survive another day.

It sounds as if you guys enjoyed the track as much as I did. I cannot wait to get on it again. I may do the Jefferson this Saturday with NESBA. Anyone up for that? Blublak? Jose?

Unfortunately, that's not the up to date version. I was trying to number them to follow my post, but I don't have a good editor here at work (that will let me 'paint' on the image.) Dang...

But, if you take that first turn to the left of the main straight, well.. that would be T-1 in my earlier post.

Ok, I think this is a sort of representation of the course as we ran it..

TPMSHEN

I marked Pit out with a series of dashes and a thin line from the pit area. Pit in is off the main straight. I added the short straight (that wasn't on the map) and took the 'car' turn (heavily banked) out so as not to confuse (too much).
