I figured it was time to move it here since we have a few that have expressed an interest in the ferry ride and cookout.

I'll have Carlos post a meeting time and place, etc. Any of those wanting to come and hang out at the house with me and Luke are welcome to do so.

We just need to get a head count for the cookout and for any that will be staying the night.

So far, it looks like it will be
4 - Nance
3 - Rainey
4 - Suarez
4 - Weaver

Just as a reminder, we have 2 sheepdogs and 2 cats in and out of the house. If you have allergies, bring your meds! I probably have something here at the house if needed as well.

We also have 2 tents and can get a 3rd if needed. We have 3 adult sleeping bags and probably 5 kids sleeping bags, plus plenty of pillows and extra blankets. Our 2 air mattresses no longer hold air, but can borrow a couple from friends.

Anyone riding from the extreme west is welcome to come in Friday night. This way you can be refreshed and not tired by time the group ride starts on Saturday. Several people are bringing their children. We have lots of inside and outside toys for little ones and a big wooden swing set out back.

Carlos is talking about a ride heading west on Sunday. This will give more riding time and get most of you closer to home as well.

I'll ask Carlos and have him post something this evening. So far it looks like it will be the Rainey/Nance/Suarez show.

Carlos and I took this ride Sunday night to check timing, etc. It was really nice. We actually took the M2 -- what a difference between the M2 and the Uly! Not necessarily bad, just different!

C3 Memorial Weekend Ferry Ride

Meet by the Washington waterfront at 11 a.m. or the Suarez house in Grifton at 10 a.m. Your choice, just let us know so no one gets left behind.

Ride Saturday from Washington and make a big loop covering some good country roads and 2 ferry rides.

Suarez house Saturday evening for cookout, music and beer or blender night!

Sunday - breakfast here and more riding.

We'll wing the rest of it.

Anyone wanting to come in Friday night just let us know. We'll probably be doing some honey do's, but will give you the remote and a cold beer! If you want to stay through Monday, that's OK too. We're flexible and have a grocery store 4 blocks away.

For those riding to Washington and the SO's driving to Grifton, I will be home. Let me check map quest and see how accurate the directions are to our house. I'll post again later.

Kristi

Dave and I won't be able to make it but wish we could. Sounds like lots of fun. If you need space, I know of a place that has lots of room and I think the owners are out of town. But I think it's pretty dark around there. Sounds like you guys will have lots of fun, I wish we could be there to enjoy the ride and friendship. Dave will be working all weekend, but I think Brankin is coming to stay Saturday night. I know Dave emailed him back, but I don't think we've heard yet if he's coming. Anyway, take PICTURES, we need to share even if by electronic means. Wish I could have gotten to meet some of you guys before I left town. I know the names, but never got the pleasure of riding with you.

Bueletta -- I think I know the place you're talking about. Seems I have a key, but no lights or water.......this is what they refer to as "roughing it" right?

I wish you were here also. Let's concentrate on October -- I think we'll call it the Anniversary Ride.

Carlos will have his camera as will JimR and JimN. Carlos and I really enjoyed the ride on Sunday. I just loved the "me" time. Haven't been on a ferry since you, Dave, Mark, Carlos and I went on the Honda. Talk about a long time ago.

I am ready for the weekend. Kristi and I rode some of the route last Sunday on the M2 and had a great time. The weather was in the upper 70s and sunny. We took off at about 4:30pm and headed to Washington. Some of the roads from here to there are in real need of paving, but they are working on some, so hopefully soon.

We passed Washington and headed down US-264 to NC-92. Historic Bath (That is a town, the oldest in North Carolina) looks as good as always. Within 30 minutes we were at Bayview Ferry on NC-306. I stopped to read the ferry times when I get popped on the back of the head by Kristi. They were holding the boat for us. So we ride straight on the ferry and across the Tar river. The crossing takes about 30 minutes and it is a great view.

We get to the other side and take off south down NC-306. At a cross road, NC-306 goes right, but I wanted to see what was to the left. Not much! After some long straights where you think you will never see civilization again, the wild life starts to put on a show. Has anyone here ever seen a Turkey Buzzard before? Kristi and I saw five on one road kill up close. These are hugh birds that stand three feet tall and have a wing span of 6+ feet. As I approach the road kill the birds scatter. They all went different directions and one pick going down the road in the same direction as me. I am running the big bird down fast as we are slowing from 65mph. The bird stays over the road only at about 4-5 ft off the ground. As I close it, I blow the horn and see the bird look back at me. It realizes it is not going to out run me. Like a loaded bomber, the bird points his winds up and to the right as I pass right under him. Pretty cool once I quit bracing for the impact. Stupid Bird!

After about 40 miles of wide open spaces I see a bride over the road. I think to myself, what is a bridge doing out here in the middle of no where. Well some how the state found the money to build this colossal bridge over the Inter-Coastal waterway. The highway goes under the bridge and then banks right to a stop sign. I take the bridge to see what is on the other side. It is a tall bridge with nothing else around it and the view is quite nice. On the other side we ride into a town called Hobucken. A sleepy run down little town. As we ride through town the road sign says pavement ends. We get to the edge of the pavement and stop to see an old run down duplex with a plaque on the front, "Hobucken Hilton." We did laugh. I check the map and the gravel road in front of me goes on for miles. Great Uly road but I am on the M2 and its getting late, so we turn around and head back over the bridge and the other way now on NC-304.

To be continued!

So we get to Oriental at 7pm. The weather is perfect so we eat at a restaurant with a hugh deck over looking the marina there. Between the boaters and the bikers, all couples there and Kristi and I are on the young side. Over the stereo, Jazz is playing and the environment was very nice. We had sea food and it was very good. Kristi is enjoying this ride, not only for the company, but a break from MOMMY duty.

At 8pm we realize we have to hustle home. A call to the babysitter and we are off. At dusk the bugs come out. I find some of the fun roads out there even though I can only see half of it because of the dead bugs on the visor. On the way back I stop for "gas", actually I have to clean the visor. I clocked 146.9 miles and the bike takes 2.67 gallons. Almost matched my best with the Buells (56mpg) at 55mpg. At this rate I could have gone almost 275 miles. Not bad considering I was running between 60-70mph most of the way. The trip helped the neglected M2, which now seems to have a little more kick than before the trip. We get home by 9:20pm and it was fun.

So what about Saturday, I have an initial route.

Leave Grifton by 10am to Washington waterfront.

Meet in Washington at 11am.

Leave Washington at 11:30am to make the 12:15pm Bayview Ferry.

The Ferry takes 30 minutes to cross.

We ride south on NC-306 to US-55 and then take the scenic route to Oriental where we will have lunch at around 1:30pm.

Leave Oriental at 2:15pm to make the Minnesott Beach Ferry at 2:45pm

Another 30 minute ride across the river.

We ride from the Ferry to Fort Macon out on the beach. We should make the fort by 3:45pm.

We are an hour and half away from home at this point so if we leave by 4:30pm, we will be in Grifton by 6pm.

So what do you think?

JimR - just sent you an e-mail. Ft. Fisher is about 2 hrs 40 minutes according to map quest. I hope you can work things out to come this weekend.

We had another tire put on the Uly today. Let's see how long this one lasts.

Give me a call if we can help make this weekend come together. If it's a bike issue, we have 2!

North Carolina Ferry Ride

Another great weekend. On Saturday Jim N and family left the Raleigh area to come over to the very metropolitan Grifton. They arrived and we sat and talked for a while before heading out to the coast for the ferries. The entire ride consisted of the oldest town in North Carolina (Bath NC inc in 1705), two ferries, a coastal Civil War fort and the beach.

At about 11:30am we get underway and rode to Washington NC for lunch. I ask the girls, "Do you want McDonald's or a nice restaurant?" You know the answer. After lunch we head out to the Bayview ferry. Along the way we make a brief stop at the waterfront of Bath, NC. and then make it to the ferry. Our timing was great, they were loading soon after pulling up. Once aboard the crew pulls us over into the shade and to the front.

Jim leaning on his bike with the girls in the background.

I call Kristi at home and find out that Webe and John are heading out to meet us at the next ferry. We ride from the Bayview ferry to the Minnesott Ferry where we meet up with the guys. We missed the ferry but that was okay because it was hot and I know of a great coffee and ice cream shop in Oriental.

The eastern North Carolina Dragon!

Oriental is very scenic and great place to take some pictures of the bike.

From left to right, my Uly, Jim's Uly, Webe's Super Glide (Blast needs a tire), and John's Sportster.

On top of a great view, the Ice Cream and smoothies were terrific!

More to come!

So after Ice Cream and Smoothies we go outside and see this go by.

The rider sees me taking the picture and turns around so I can get a few more. He says it is a 1966 BMW R50-2.

After a chat with the BMW rider it was time to head for the next ferry. We get on the Minnesott Ferry and again we are pulled in the shade and up front, it must be the Ulys.

Okay, so I know it's a Harley but I was looking at the C3 sticker on Webe's helmet.

The girls take a look at the boats and seagulls go by.

After the ferry it was off to the coast and Ft. Macon. We all take a stroll around the old civil war fort.

While the rest of us walked around, Jim decided that the cannon mount was a great place for a nap.

The bikes at the beach.

The girls at the beach.

After the beach it was the ride home and a late dinner. On the way we stop for gas and the Uly riding two up get 59.25mpg. I was very impressed.

The next day we took some shot before riding off to Goldsboro via some good back roads that I know. After lunch we head out west and I take Jim down Devil's Racetrack and we have some fun on the new pavement. By the time we cross I-40 on NC-210 and Jim knows where he is so he takes the lead and takes us down some roads he knows. We end up at Jim's house and the girls hang out for an hour and half until its time to go. Carlee and I load up, we had to gas up and the bike for the third straight time gets over 50mpg at 53.3mpg. We straight line the ride home and make it home just before 7pm.

For Carlee and I we rode 450 miles during the two days. The girls did not want the weekend to end but it was time. So we have to start making plans for the Tall Ships the first weekend of July.
