Hi guys,

Matty and Timbo win the prize! That was Larry W. (Kidcoocoo) on his Beemer with me alongside on the S2 (with new Forcewinder). Timbo and Cafe Bill were unfortunately unable to join us. We tried. ;)

Slaughter, sorry we couldn't stop to chat. Larry and I were both pressed time-wise. We had to get our 400 miles in and be home for family stuff.

I left SB early and we met at 7:48am at the Shell station at the base of ACH. Fueled and went to Newcomb's Ranch for breakfast. Back down to Big Tujunga, up Angeles Forest to Palmdale, then West (where we saw Slaughter) past Lake Hughes to N2, up to The Old Road, then 138 W. to another side street into Gorman. I-5 to Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley / Cerro Noroeste to the 33, then back down Cerro to Lockwood Valley, then West on LV to the 33, then South into Ojai.

Then back to SB for me, and back to LA for Larry. Fun day.

Slaughter, if you wanna ride with us sometime give a holler and I'll make sure to let you know the details.

More details on the upcoming Golden State BRAG ride to Solvang's Vintage Motorcycle Museum. It's happening Sunday, Mar 23. There will be two starting points: Glendale HD/B at 8:00 a.m, and Ventura HD/B at 9:30. Ventura dealer is in Camarillo. Take Central Ave exit and right from the NB 101, then left on Del Norte. Their phone is 805-981-9904. Lunch break in Ojai around noon. Any questions, call Tim or Candice at (661)274-1096.

It'll be a scenic backroad ride but we're not doing Camino Cielo (unless everybody wants to see the hang gliders up close).

Sparky,

I think you are talking about THIS Sunday, February 23 are you not?? - NOT March 23rd. The notice I got was for this coming Sunday (Candice said you helped route planning so I think maybe it is a boo boo on your post here). Anyways, the ride is this coming weekend, not a month off.

I am bummed because I am missing the ride to Solvang this weekend because of this *$%# prior commitment.

Jim_SB,

Hell yeah, I'll ride with you. I turned L there at Leona Valley to pick up the other 4 - we headed out to Ojai for sushi then back.

I am working Sunday (don't ask...) - but Saturday I can chew through my restraints and break away if you are doing anything.

Had my first "off road" on the Great Pumpkin (my "Chris Matty replica" S3) later in that day on the way back from Ojai. I was running into a turn a little hard, got off the brake going in... didn't think it was going to be that TIGHT, exited wide and into the gravel on Lake Hughes Rd (coming back via Castaic) Maaaan, I know better'n ta use a touch of brake at the apex - and not expect her to try to stand right up. Kept rubber down, helmet up and got to do a bit of a wobbly slide - really entertained my buddy running maybe 1-2 seconds behind me on his VFR750 - especially because he thought I was going to pull back onto the road (and into him) - I let her stop in the dirt before pulling back onto the pavement. STOOPID! He said it was pretty dramatic to see from that close.

Ferris,

I probably need to have my nose rubbed in my priorities so I can be trained!

Yeah on the Buell colors. Was up at Newcombs on Halloween day and that was the first time I made the connection with black and orange and Halloween after getting a couple comments. I just thought the color combo was cool when I got the bike - sorta Harley-like, never thought of the Halloween theme.

Slaughter, Can't ride Saturday. If possible I'm going to hook up with the Glendale BRAG guys Sunday at Ventura Buell for the ride up to Solvang (they're coming by my house anyway).

What route did you take to Ojai? 126? If so you should check out Lockwood Valley to the 33. Takes longer but it's worth it. There are several moist/dirty seasonal creek crossings. NBD if you slow down for them. So if you try Lockwood and you see a sign that says "Caution: Flooding" slow your arse down! The road is perfect except for those 7 or 8 crossings. They are all in dips so none can be seen in advance.

We were at the Deer Lodge in Ojai at 1:30 for lunch. Is that where you ended up?

Lake Hughes Road is fun. Gotta get that corner entry speed right though, eh? ;)

We'll hook up eventually. And I do need to do a scouting ride up in FB's neighborhood too. I'll keep you and Ferris in mind...

Matty, you riding up on Sunday?

Jim,

We ate at (brain cramp) - Something-or-other Bob's Fresh Fish/Sushi... danged if I can't remember the right name.

Maybe let's plan an invasion of Lake Isabella. I haven't ridden up there since I had a bike that shifted on the right side.

I know Candice and Tim up here are always interested in other rides. Have 2 other Buellers at work that're wanting to start making a ride or 2.

Oops, you're right. Golden State is Feb 23, sorry. I was thinking about Jerry Johnson's upcoming BRAG weekend on March 8/9 & got cornfused.

BTW, I proposed a ride to Kernville at the last Golden State meeting, & Tim & Candice put it on the near calendar. It'll be the general route that Ferris mentioned Feb 15 above. I've done that one a few times. This is an especially nice ride in Springtime when the hills are bright green and the cows wander the open range on Caliente-Bodfish. Perhaps FB could meet us in Tehachapi when the date gets firmed up?

Ferris (and others)

A couple of us are running up to Kernville this Saturday. This isn't a Buell ride just a mix of our regular group of sportbikers from work here.

Any recommendations for lunch up there? We'll be leaving from this area around 0900. If you want to meet for lunch, we could make that happen, too.

This is pure coincidence - the others proposed Kernville/Isabella just a half hour ago so I thought I'd pop on here and give you a warning.

Sparky, FYI if any of the BRAG riders decide to stop at Cold Springs Tavern on the way home Sunday make sure they use the Paradise Road route from the 154 (the back way going under Cold Springs Bridge). Stagecoach Road is closed between CST and the 154 due to a mud and rock slide.

Just get off the 154 at Paradise (which only goes East there), go about a half mile and turn right onto Stagecoach Road. Ignore the "road closed to through traffic" sign and proceed a couple miles to CST.

Sunday is 'bike day' at CST. Only bikes are allowed in the parking lot. Live music from 1pm on. No cover charge. Usually quite popular.

Ferris (and anybody else),

We're heading for Kernville/Isabella this Saturday. I just had this sprung on my by one of the regulars an hour ago. I know you're out of town but maybe we'll scout your area while you are not there to defend it.

This is our work-based mob of 4 or so sport bike riders, not a Buell group. Doubt there are going to be other Buellers along with the really cool ride happening Sunday. (still bummed about having to miss the ride Sunday) Might have another Buell or 2 along but... kinda iffy. Probably be me, an RC51, VFR750 and a GSXR1000

If anybody is around, let's do lunch!

Lunch in Kernville. It's gotta be Cheryl's Diner, right Ferris? Map and directions, no charge.

Jim_SB, is Paradise Rd the left turn intersection going south on 154?

Have fun & do watch out for those cows,
Sparky

oh sure, y'all decide to come visit when i'm gonna be away for the weekend? some friends YOU are! ;)

Sparky is The Man when it comes to this sort of stuff, and Cheryl's Diner is a worthy grub-stop. check out his map and directions, what a guy!

after lunch it's worth heading north out of Kernville and pointing up-river, altho eventually you'll have to u-turn due to winter-time road closures.

155 from Wofford Heights up to Greenhorn Summit and beyond is bitchin', but watch for sand in the roadway near the top. if you go this way, the descent from Glennville down to Bakersfield on Granite Road (part of last year's ALL-Cal BRAG Tour, altho going the opposite direction) will be some of the best riding you'll likely do all day.

exiting the Lake/Kern River Valley, 178 down-canyon to Bakersfield is a hoot, but your options for twisty stuff get real limited once you get there.

or, exit the Lake/KRV to the east on 178 (as per Sparky's directions) and aim for 14. 178 along here is a bunch of fun, with clean, fresh tarmac and lots of cool sweepers, and no traffic.

SB Jim, let's pick a weekend to do your recon work up here, then post the info and see if we can entice some of our local fellow Hooligan friends to join us, k?

ride to lean,
FB :)

ps: we've had a TON of rain up here of late, and plenty of our bestest roads are dirty in places from run-off.

and, assume there's a BFC (big frikkin' cow) around every corner...

Okay, I see all these jokes about cows in the road up by Ferris. What's up with that? Farm country? Come 'round a tight right hander and make hamburger? :?

Hey now, just because we are riding up this Sat doesn't mean we can't just do it again next weekend (I also have next Friday off, too) Nothing wrong about hitting an alternate route up the second time in a week.

in an issue of Thunder Press several years ago, i told the story of riding hot with fast-guy Roger Roeszler, from Deadwood, SD down to Nemo, at speeds that were, at times, quite jail-worthy.

cresting a rise at a ton-plus, there were three BFC's crossing the road, and it took every bit of our respective Thunderbolts' excellent Performance Machine-engineered WHOA!!!-ability to avoid steaks on the house (and on the forks).

much of the Kern River Valley is free range, so.......assume there is a BFC around every corner. and unlike us, they typically move well UNDER the posted limit.

Slaughter, the following weekend is bad for me, too (it's actually GOOD, but bad for riding...), but let's keep this train-wreck-of-thought alive, as it's obvious there's a tremendous day (or weekend) of Hooligan-esque riding just waiting for the right time to happen :)

Ferris (and others),

Yeah, let's hold this thought, keep the thread alive. - The Kernville/Isabella run from here is a great ride. Take a mid-day break there and walk around a bit and still make it back down here before dark.

Days are only getting longer and warmer.

Trying to get in a ride somewhere pretty regularly when I am not diving.
