Rodger that.

I did a reconnaissance run to Port Dover today. Seem's quite a few other people had the same idea. I had a footlong hotdog and some fries while watching old guys along the pier doing their best to win the "perch derby" that was going on. My step dad wants to see what all the fuss is about on the 13th so we're riding down EARLY to beat the crowds. Anyone else heading down? Personally I find it to be a much more enjoyable trip any other day of the year.

I was out riding last night, and noticed my shifter was loose - thought I would tighten it when I got home. Turning left at an intersection, rear end broke loose under very little power, and I almost dropped it. Got home, checked shifter bolt - noticed oil over left side of bike, and only droplets on the rear tire. Primary gasket had blown out at the shifter bolt. It looks like possibly the same failure Lawrence had at Mosport (and he was "smoking"!) - I can't believe how slippery my tire was, and how lucky Lornce was that Mosport is a "right turn" track! I have removed the chin fairing, and will do pre-flight checks from now on....

Glad to hear you didn't get yourself into a high-side situation John. Make sure you get the "newer" gasket and not the crap paper one. Seeing that you'll have the cover off, its a good time to look at the primary tension adjuster and primary chain. I replaced both of mine at 30K. I also put in a new (aftermarket) clutch. A marked improvement over the stock unit. Keep an eye on that bolt...I had two blow outs before switching to the different gasket. No problems (not even a loose shifter bolt) since then.

Picked up the new style gasket last night (34955-89B $33.95 CDN) - thin metal covered with a paper on both sides. Previous gasket (James Gasket with silicone bead) looked like it decomposed in the area under the shifter bolt. I think the front chin fairing bracket broke, the fairing shaking caused the bolts to loosen, and then the gasket let go. Small things seem to have big effects on these bikes...

Pretty close to the 401 and Dufferin St.
I've been to TO several time a year for the past 10 or so years for hockey, and I have brought the bike up too, so I am aware of the cage situation there. My cell is 847.560.3825

So you must be aware that there are no good motorcycle roads within an hour or so of Toronto. Most of us S.O.B's are west of Toronto (sorry Brett). What's your time-line like? We could head north-east towards Algonquin Park. It's been a while since I've ridden that way. Round trip is about six hours though...?

Lornce, K, Mike with the big BMW, John, and the rest of you guys...I know your all up for a "Power Cruise"??!!

Caboose, I will be up there on the 12th for 2 weeks. The kid is in camp only until 12:30 the 1st week, until 4pm the 2nd week. the weekend in between is pretty open. Looking for something to do. The kid is 16, and is fairly good on the back end. I can pretty much handle anything. During the week I do the Tuesday night ride with the Fuzzy Riders (see fuzzy-riders.com) Other than that, I don't much know my way around outside of TO proper.
Open to ideas.

Jay,

I can appreciate your concern, but my carburetted Buells have been pretty fool proof. I'm not too worried about riding the S2 to James Bay

Mosport was a blast, the S1 is handling really well with the S2 forks and clip-on bars. I want a bigger motor. : ) Soon as I figure out how to reduce some of the pictures I've got on cd, I'll post a few here.

cheers,
Lawrence

Hi Jay,

I've got your pit tent sitting here in my livingroom. I'll take it to work tomorrow and drop it off on the way home. Should be by around 7 or 8. Would that work?

Aaron's pipe is completely fractured from the collector. In the absence of a jig he suggested tacking it while on the bike, then remove it to complete the welding. I think that's a pretty good idea. There's a piece missing, too. It's going to need a patch. What do you think?

Kahuna's bike sheared a front motor isolator bolt off in the head today. No biggie, I thought, when my own S1 did the same - with BOTH bolts - the broken studs were pretty easy to remove. No such luck with K's....

What a mess. The stud itself was MUCH harder than the studs in my S1. We had a devil of a time drilling it to accept an easy out. Didn't have a square easy-out that'd fit, only a spiral piece. I hate spiral easy-outs..... Especially when they break off in a Buell cylinder head. That's as far as we got before we decided it'd be best if K just limped home with one bolt.

I'm hoping maybe Brian can remove this mess with one of his edm machines..... Ugh.

Yeah...we'll have to tack the header in-place for sure. The area to be welded must be very clean. Dirty steel + TIG welding = cracked welds. Can you guys source out a piece of thin stainless for the patch? I've got suitable shielding gas hooked up to my welder, but I'll need to pick up some correct filler rod.

Tough luck K. Why do these bolts shear off? Isolators wear out and putting to much vibs/stress on the bolts?

Did it last year. Not much trouble considering the money you can save.
The Duck club in Canada has a good article on it:
http://www.docc.ca/html/border_crossing.html
The best site is:
http://www.riv.ca/english/html/how_to_import.html
DO NOT try to drag it across and deal with it here, you'll get burned.
Basically, you figure out which border crossing you're bringing it to, and get the owner to send a copy of the title 72 hours prior to your arrival. Customs checks to make sure it isn't hot and clears the paperwork as you come back home. (I'd call the US customs at the border crossing and talk to them) You get Canada customs to do their thing, pay an import fee and taxes and you're away. You then have 90 days to get it inspected (fee included in import fee) by CDN Tire and it's road legal.
Oh yeah, you need a recall compliance letter with your vin, call harley and they'll set you up with one. Sounds like a lot, but it's only about three hours of phone calls and jerking around, and I saved about two grand after all the fees and taxes. They're giving away Buells and Ducks down south compared to here. Drop me a line if you have any questions.

That's a lotta hassle, Newfer. Yourta just buy my S2 while I'm feeling foolish enough to sell it.

I'd make you a good deal cause you're a Newfie.... even though you're an evil, scum-sucking insurance broker.

Hmmmmn, anyone out there?

Been some awesome fall riding weather. Anyone been doing any awesome fall riding?

Test rode the new Ulysses yesterday at Barrie H-D on my way to Muskoka.

There isn't a twisty road within forty miles of Barrie (and they wouldn't let me take it to Southwood Road) so I can't comment on the handling (though I'm sure it's stellar). What it is, is roomy, smooth and comfy with nice light controls that don't demand your attention. I liked it.

Amazing how different from our tubers these XB bikes are. Engines feel smoother, suspensions seem tauter and the chassis' are more "flickable". Using tuber-type riding cues, you feel like you're turning into corners too soon. ie: with a bit of familiarization you'll carry more corner entry speed than a tuber. Neat. : )

Hope all's well with you guys and maybe we'll see you on the road some time!

ciao,
Lorenzo

Wondering the same here Lorence, thought that everyone sold their Buells or just constantly riding through this glorious summer.
Just north of Barrie off 11 there is rd.13 I will try and get the name of it! was just on it for the first time last week and I would have to say its better than the 507 out Lindsay way.even a little rough so the Uly would have a fair testing ground.Still have not seen one myself cause I do avoid the dealerships like the plague.
Would be nice to get a couple of Buells together for a ride seems as if your the only one but thats not that bad cause my S3 still stops them in their tracks.
Till next time, Shawn
