"SAFETY!!!"

On your LEFT HANDLE BAR CONTROL GROUP there is a
"PASSING LAMP SWITCH" !!!

The way you use this "PASSING LAMP SWITCH" is to
ride with your LOW BEAM HEADLAMP ON !!! This swith when operated on and off will make your HIGH BEAM "FLASH" while the LOW BEAM stays ON !!!
ANYTIME YOU SEE(THINK) A DRIVER IN FRONT OF YOU
MAY DO SOMETHING THAT MAY OR MAY NOT SACRE THE "BUELLschitte" out of you start FASHING YOUR "HIGH BEAM" !!! IF YOU SEE A CAR THAT MAY OR MAY NOT PULL OUT IN FRONT OF YOU START FLASHING YOUR HIGH BEAM !!!

Drivers DO NOT "SEE" a single headlamp wheather it be on HIGH BEAM or LOW BEAM, "BUT" when this
"SWITCH" is used in this way it will save your "ARSE" 99.9% of the time as it has my ARSE !!!

"RIDE AS SAFE AS YOU CAN !!!"

Flashing headlights help but when someone isn't paying attention, you could be driving a semi and they'd still pull out in front of you. Nick, looks like you're off the hook for those two work related research projects. I'll try and get out there to visit when I can if that's ok with Sammie.

Sammie, thanks for the update on Nick. So sorry to hear about the accident and his injuries. Like others have said, let us know if there is anything we can do.

Since I'm not going to Daytona, it's easy for me to suggest/offer. but since a lot of people are going to be in the area, might there be some practical tasks they can take care of to help Sammie and Nick out? Shopping, clean the gutters, mow the lawn - that kind of stuff.

My very best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

I'm speechless.. (and that's a first ~l~) All of you are wonderful friends to Nick... well and to me, too. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart!
At this point, I don't know what I need help with, to be honest. There's so much left undone from getting ready to have the party and of course from all the house painting and such. I suppose at some point I will have to ask some of you for help. I can't tell you all how much Nick and I appreciate your well wishes and offers for help. In a day or so I will be printing all of your messages and taking them to the hospital so he can read them. It'll mean so much to him.
Ok, here's today's update.. so far... Nick is in pre-op right now. They will call me when he actually goes into surgery so I can time my return to the hospital. He'll be having 3 surgeries today. Yep, three! Seems they discovered that Nick's left leg is broken, too. ~sigh~ I think they called it the "fib-tib", it's the bone just under his knee. So that will be operated on also.
Jim and everyone else, to reach me you can write to sultry@sultry-leather.com (my business email) or you can call Nick's cell phone (which I am not very good with... I keep muting it! ~l~) Here's my cell # 386-216-7203. When I am at the hospital I don't get a signal at all, so don't think I'm just not answering. Please leave a message and let me know you are one of the Buellers. I will return all calls as soon as I am able.
Thank you, Frank, that's very kind of you.
I am already gathering stuff for the lawyer I am going to hire. Pictures of Nick's bike and the car the woman who pulled out in front of him was driving (before it changes), skid mark measurements, and so on.

Here is what I am thinking.. I'm sure some of you want to send cards or such, but instead of sending them to the hospital, please wait until I tell you Nick is home. You can then send them to our house and he will be able to enjoy them. He is going to be so doped up for the next week, at least. Not only that, I am already going to have a heck of a time getting him home, I don't think I could handle flowers or whatever, too. I think Nick gave you all our home address, right?
I have to admit to myself that there is a chance that Nick won't come directly home from the hospital. He may be put in re-hab to help him walk again. I don't know anything definite yet, but I will surely let you all know as soon as I know anything else. I will write again tonight/morning, when I get home and let you all know how surgery went and anything else there may be to tell.
Thanks to you all again for being here and for being our friends.

Sammie

Sammie:

Great to talk to you this morning and, party aside, let Nick know he's got friends all over the world at the ready to help.

If fact, remind him that although he may not be aware of it both Blake and I have had some experience in surgery. . . . well, not ACTUALLY surgery, but something like it. You could get the Doctors to do the real complicated stuff and Blake and I can set the simple bones.

All the best to you and we are here and ready to help,
Court

P.S. - I foresee a special event for Friday night.

Nick,
Hope surgery goes well and may the road to recovery be smooth and swift.

Sammie, sounds like you have a few friendly people local to you but you'll be surrounded by them soon. I was not going to come to Daytona but I'll rethink if Court's "special event" on Friday involves helping with your house painting as you'll need all the supervision you can get.

Sammie; this last fracture is probably the fibula. A skinny bone that sits to the outside of the shin bone. It helps support things, in particular around the ankle, so it's a good thing to get it fixed.

If they offer a rehab stay I'd suggest taking them up on the offer. Getting Nick home in a state where he'll need help with *everything" is going to be a huge strain on both of you. Better to have the pros handling the tough stuff - including cracking the whip in rehab - than having the 2 of you struggle.

Anyway - please tell Nick we're thinking of him. The best of NYC Juju projected your way.

Sammie,

Thanks for keeping us in the know.

You and Nick have a lot on your hands.

You both were very generous in offering to have so many strangers at your place this year but first things first - TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES!!! Don't feel obligated to follow through on the party thing now!

Tell Nick that we're all keeping both of you in our thoughts.

Please accept whatever small offers of help we may be able to come up with.

Here we go... Nick's current update:
First let me say, I don't know why things were changed from one day to the next. I never could get much, if any, explanation.
Today Nick had 2 surgeries, not 3. They operated on both of his legs. He got pins in both, the right leg (femur) is wrapped in some kind of foam. The left (tib-fib) is wrapped in ace bandages. They didn't operate on his left shoulder. The only reason I heard that made any sense as to why not is that they could have done nerve damage. I understand that and it makes sense, just none of the rest of it did. I never even got to talk to the actual surgeon. Ugh, that's a whole other story about how icky this day has been. Not only that, but some one decided today that he doesn't need the brace. I got this news through Nick, no one ever spoke to me. I feel like I got blindsided after all I heard yesterday! Guess they've decided that the spine can just mend on it's own. I could do some serious grumbling here, but I won't. It was confirmed today that Nick will be going into a re-hab when he's released. It kills me that he won't be home, but I'm glad, too. They can do more for him than I could. Nick is in an incredible amount of pain even though he's getting quite a bit of Morphine. I feel so bad for him. I suppose I've said that already.
Again, you all leave me stunned with your oh so generous offers of help and friendships. Thank you so much!
What's going on Friday, Court? Which Friday?
I wish I could go through and thank you all individually, but when I start I end up crying and I'm trying very hard not to do that.
I have to get some sleep tonight, it didn't happen last night, the carpet people are coming out very early to lay the new carpet and I have to start getting our house back together. It's a lot of cleaning, some painting, door hanging and that kind of stuff, so there's no point in asking for help with those piddley things. I just have to manage my time better! ~l~ There is one thing that I will need help with at some point though. Nick was getting ready to clean and stain the cement around the pool and I know it'll drive him batty knowing he can't do it. I was thinking that maybe, if any of you could do it, that it would be cool if it were finished when he came home from re-hab. That's what I'm trying to do with the rest of these things we were just finishing up on.
Anywho... let me know....
Thanks so much from both of us!

Goodnight and Blessed be,

Sammie

Sammie,

Thanks for the update. I know it's been a long day for you. We've spent our fair share of time in hospitals with my sister during her lifetime. If the doctor's aren't taking the time to talk to you, demand their time. My Mom and I sometimes have to go in with the Bossy Mom, Bi*^&y Sister approach so we know what's going on each and every day. Don't be afraid to be assertive when it comes to Nick's medical care. They should be talking to someone who's not on Morphine, and as his wife, that's you. I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't know. Sometimes doctors just drive me crazy.

While I know you want him home, Re-hab will be time well spent for Nick. It can really make a difference in the healing process. Know that you're not alone. The BadWeb community has proven the goodness in people over and over. Try and get some sleep.

Good night, Kristi

If the doctor's aren't taking the time to talk to you, demand their time.

Being kinda in the business, let me second that. Get the name(s) of the doctor in charge of Nick's care. Get an office phone # and address, and then keep bugging them. Don't expect that things you ask for via the nurses will actually reach the doctors. Be polite but insistent.

On the brace thing; I understand your frustration of not being kept informed, but "no brace" can only be a good thing. I don't know the specifics, but if the doctors feel the brace is unnecessary , it may well be because whatever fractures they found have been found to be stable/not moving around. Take it as a positive sign.

If there are any specifics you'd like to talk more about, please shoot me a mail (via my profile: click on my user name to the left on this page and my profile will pop up) and I'll send you my phone numbers.

Sammy...thanks for taking the time yesterday to talk to me.It's unfathonable to me what all your going through at this time.Obviously everyone in the Buell world are pulling for you two,and will continue to as long as it takes to get Nick better.......so count ME in to help on that concrete staining....you got my number so call before the 8th and tell me what I can bring over.
And what others have said about the Surgeons....you HAVE to get in their faces to get info at a time like this...Ask for a briefing at least from all the major players in this so you can be informed and get their ideas for rehab.Pick out the most factual Surgeon and though their bedside manner is usually the worst they will give you the pertinent facts straight up with the least bull.Stay positive and see you all soon!

Sammi, hang in there. Perhaps someone could volunteer to help set up some help. Sammi is not gonna have a lot of time to call a bunch of people etc but if she had one point of contact who could coordinate volunteers perhaps that would help?

Sammi, by all means think about contacting Henrik. You may not know this but he is pretty good at all that doctor talk;) (He's an MD.) He could be a huge help to you in understanding what is going on.
