ok here goes. I had never used the stuff before & a few yrs ago I was putting my 1100 Virago up for about 6 months or so. Was storing it at my mother in-laws so I filled up with premium & added the proper amount of stabil & rode the bike out to Trevor, about 20 miles or so.

Went to get it about 6 months or so later & it would not start. Opened the bowl drains & nothing coming out, fuel pump would pump gas no problem, just wouldnt get in the carbs. Ended up pulling both carbs & the float needles were actually glued in their bores with a crusty red mixture.....same color as stabil. Cleaned it all up & bike started up & ran fine. Got home & parked it. About a week or so goes by & try to start it & same damn thing. Pulled carbs again & it was the same story. Had to pull the tank & flush it out real good along with the carbs & never had another problem.

We just had this discussion over on atc & a couple other guys had similar things happen, one was on a gas powered log splitter. Other guys had no issues & raved about stabil, but like I said before I have never had a problem starting anything that just sat with gas over the winter.

Has anyone here ever heard of gas turning to varnish like the stabil commericial actually claims? Has anyone experienced a bike or car that wouldnt start because the gas "went bad" over the winter? I have never heard of anyone who did.

But based on my experience I would never, ever use stabil nor recommend it to anyone.

Man can I ramble on or what?:D

The gas we are getting in this area is terrible and yes I have problems with the gas we get to pump in are investments. Usually people are having problems with small engines lawnmowers, etc but I seen it twice the year before last ounce in X1 and my other buddies V-MAX and the gas varnished the jets and the bowls had a gummy film in them. Now talking to a buddy that road races a car told me to store with race gas and I did last year for the first time and the bike ran so awesome when I started up for the first time.Put race gas in,Shut off gas,run the bike until carb is dry. Good night don't let the bed bugs bite.

Bads1...

Question...Wouldn't an octane booster accomplish the same thing with premium gas?

No threat from Bomber, why dont you come on down & deliver it yourself?:)

Plus you dont want to use race gas with fuel injection. I heard its supposed to screw up the O2 sensor real damn quick.

That I don't know Bill would have to ask Wes or my buddy that races cars. But for the $22.00 I spent on gas I'm not going to have any problems like my buddies did with there bikes. BadS1.

Dyna checked that one out,you don't want to use leaded race gas that will mess up your O2sensor not unleaded.

I've used Stabil for the past four years in my Buell. Other than making the exhaust stink, I've never had a problem. What I usually do is try to time a tank refill with storage. If not possible, I drain the tank first. Then I add the Stabil and fresh gas, run for 10-15 minutes. Lastly I shut off the petcock & run the engine until it dies. Not sure is this is really a great method but it seems to work good for me. Never a problem getting the bike to fire in the spring.

Is this topic really club related? Maybe we should move it to the knowledge board :D

Ok, I get it. Unleaded additives may work. Duh...

Concerning Sta-Bil, I have always read that less than the advertised dosage is better and that too much is a real bad thing.

Have to agree with the drain the system and use no additives approach. My Dad, The Engineer, taught me that a zillion years ago and all the gas powered equipment has always started flawlessly with no varnish build up.

In later years, he did the same thing and added the Sta-Bil in a very small amount to the tank after draining all. Bleed off what settled in the spring, shake up the rest and go for the gold.

Evidence: Problem free 53 year old outboard motor and 20 year old garden tractor. I could go on but won't as you get the drift. Just remember, when draining the system, to open the choke when the engine begins to stall. That gets as much of the gas out as possible without surgery.

Or be real quick with the throttle when the bike starts to puke out on you.

Do they even sell leaded race gas? And if so, why cant they simply switch over to unleaded? I doubt any of todays engines used in races have the old valve seats that would be screwed up by unleaded anymore.
