Sounds like a few of us are home this morning? I'm not going in 'til this afternoon, if at all.

The best thing about "vigorous debate and dialogue" is that differences of opinion are finally understood. As long as we don't make it personal ("Stimpy, you IDIOT!") or get defensive ("Oh yeah, well yo mama!"), we're all good!

Let me say up front this next post is for Blake. I am sorry about the length, but it is required to get all the information out on the table.

Blake, Let me see if I can dissect the issues that I had.

Plug, Wires, Coil and Battery… It seems as though the Plugs might have been the root cause of my problem. I purchased High $$ plugs from J&P at $14.99 a piece. I noticed on install they had a different wrench size (normal) and not bigger per the old Buell plugs. Upon break and fix maintenance I found the Coil secondary winding shorted, the new Crane wires had lost their ohm rating by half using my Fluke meter and sustained what look to be arch patterns (Shielding physically removed in places) on them where they came in close proximity to metal. The Battery was STONE COLD DEAD and would not retain a charge. The plugs were not showing any physical damage. I reassembled the new coil, wires and used the old plugs. The bike had the same symptoms instantly. I purchased $2.99 Wal-mart plugs and the bike has run well since.

Valve train, per the dealer… The bike had a collapsed valve spring in the forward Jugg. I brought the bike in due to hearing a pronounced valve clattering at revs (3800-6000) in acceleration spurts. Commuting the bike in 100 degree weather to downtown Dallas from Frisco, about a 25 mile commute at 80mph my standard cruising speed I figured I needed to get the thing checked out. The service rep. asked the standard questions, (oil type and brand, riding style, miles on the bike) and upon finding the issue, he made the following statement. “The sportster motor was not intended to be a sportbike motor, there for I should change my riding style, Install an Oil Cooler and keep the revs down or I would float the valves, killing the seals and or collapsing springs. I needed to only run HD syn 3 oil and stay away from Mobile V-Twin 20/50 as I was running that. I would also get more valve train noise running synthetic oil and to just expect noise from the motor”. Owning an 83’ Ironhead, I think I know what motor noise sounds like compared to Valve train coming apart noise. I asked about the motor needing an oil cooler, he stated “it doesn’t do you any good if you’re not moving”. None the less that was the issue. I still under load in the upper revs as recent as this last weekend get valve clatter.

Muffler Clamps, I purchased the bike with an after market BOSS racing pipe. This pipe in no longer in production and if you do a search on X1 files will see it was a beast in every respect (sound, mounting etc.). The bike had the newer Y mount installed and an after market rear mount. This setup would tear its self apart daily. I and Lowes became good friends. I did everything from strap the rear pipe with Pipe junction fittings to aircraft banding. The front mount would break every other ride or so. I replaced with fence hangers to NASCAR racing hangers found in JEGGS. I finally purchased a D&D after market slip-on and went to the Dealer and ordered the stock Z bracket which on the 2001-2002 cyclones mount to the swing arm with swing arm bushings. I had none of this on my bike at this point. I then had to purchase the new bushing set for the Y mount at the front of the bike.

Vapor locking as it is affectionately known is caused when the fuel in the carb float bowl heats up to boiling. It is very common in racing or drag racing due to the higher intake manifold temps, thus isolator spacers between carbs and intakes. In my case I was commuting one very hot day this summer and noticed the bike shuttering and jerking I pulled it over and it died instantly. I tried to fire it back up, only to get back fires and the engine turning over but not starting. So, I looked and touched the Force winder with my leather gloves on, it felt like I was touching the header pipe. It burnt me through the leather. I knew instantly the Carburetor had to be at boiling point. I let the bike sit in the shad and I even put a red shop towel in some water that I carried in my backpack over the force winder. It was a pretty funny, kinda like watching an egg cook on the pavement. It just STEAMED away. I gave it about 15 min. and it started right up.

Motor Isolators or Rubberized motor mounts for the bike were supposed to have been replaced due to a recall. I started to notice an increase in vibration in the bike and with the muffler tearing its self apart I had to get a second opinion. I took it in and let them look at the bike they immediately disassembled the top isolator and showed me where the rubber had worn out. The replaced them and charged me stating the bike had been upgraded and these were normal wear related. I have just over 17k miles on the bike and it went through a set of motor mounts! WoW! In the Car industry they call that a Yugo! LOL just kidding….

So there are the issues…. Now if I can just get this tranny puking thing whooped!

Good report. Thanks for that.

What about the "swingarm bushing"?

Oh yeah! The swing arm bushings are in fact the muffler mount bushing. They are located on the Swing arm; when I purchased them from the HD Dealer he referred to them as Swing arm bushings. The original pair were plum worn out. I purchased a new set and ran them for another 3k miles and when I went to buy the new Z bracket I pulled them out and took them with me because they looked as though they had frayed on the center sleeve. After inspection the parts guy said "Yep, you need a new pair" I asked if they had any polyurethane, he replied they didn't carry anything but the rubber ones. So I bought them again. I couldn't buy just the bushings; I had to purchase a whole kit for $12. Anyway, I think that sums it up.

I am curious, I was reading at thread about putting XB wheels on the M2. I have a lead on a pair of wheels, but I am concerned with the axels and the mounting point for the rim brake. Do you have a break down of what it would take to do the swap? I have a lead on the brake rotor too.

You know, I missed this run last year and I'd really love to do it this year, but all day Sunday is just not an option this time of year. They've got me working six days a week pretty much all the way through January. In any case, everybody else should go. How cool would it be to have an all-Buell pack within the pack?

Angela, glad you got the bike back with no charges. You might try running steady at around 3200-3400 rpm for about 10 minutes. I believe thats the correct rpm for the ecm to learn the changes that have been made. Maybe that will help with the rough running...
I'll be out on the other side of Abilene next weekend visiting family and gathering a bit of firewood...Yall have fun...

Micah,
I don't know anything specific about changing to the XB wheels. Best post that question to the KV where those who know for sure will see it and respond.

I do suggest you use the neoprene muffler mount bushings from American Sport Bike. The more firmly the exhaust is held to the engine, the better.

Kandie isn't coming with me(that really sucks)

Still on for Monday night though.

Everybody ride safe tomorrow, make sure people know that Buell rules!

Sadly, I must work exactly in the middle of the day, precluding my attendance of any portion of the run. Retail's just dandy.

In any case, stay warm.

Yes, I am flying down on Sunday the 22nd.
I will be there at 12:22 PM
I will not have time to do any riding on Sunday like last year. You have no idea how sorry I am for that. No Glen Rose BBQ

So, I am free Monday night for the BBQ feast.
I am working on getting some "factory people" there as well.
We need to pick a place,a time, who's going to pick us up at the Gaylord.

Again, I am very sorry I can't ride with you guys like last year. That was a lot of fun for me.

We’ve been looking forward to this since the demo ride in October.
Who is picking a place to eat on Monday?

I'll volunteer to pick you guys up, Dave. I'm only 10 miles from there.

Brenham is beautiful, Road_thing. I went to A&M. The best part about that place was trying to avoid it as I explored the surrounding counties. I've been wanting to take the bike down that way to relive some old times. But it may be a bit far for a Monday night dinner. : )

BBQ again this time?

I was thinking of the Trail Dust in Arlington. Not BBQ, but Grade "A" Texas Angus cooked over an open pit mesquite fire. It don't get any better... fillets and porterhouses all around?

I can bring some of the best BBQ sauce there is if that is a requirement.

What you say Dave?

Well, we will soldier on with a "Daves Commemorative" ride on Saturday, or Sunday depending on the weather (last year's ride was a bit chilly, but a warm spell for Dave!).

Stay posted for the details.

Hey, I suggest we let Daves and the other vistors decide what kind of food to have. Steaks, BAR-B-Q, or Mexican... Some food they might not have up north, except for cheese and brats... : )

What'd ya say Daves, what kind of munchies sounds good to you???
