Jim,
Congrats on the adjustment of priorities and the side benefit of it producing a new bike. As much as I hate to see another tuber go by the wayside (and possibly become chopper donor bait) moving forward is definitely a step in the right direction.
I walked in the dealership at 5:30. By the time I left, they had been closed for an hour and a half.
That is a definite sign of a good dealer! I bought every bike I've owned from Uke's H-D/Buell in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Everytime I've been there, whether to buy a bike or just some parts, the owner, Keith, and I always get to talking motorcycles & riding and it's usually at least an hour after the store has closed that we part ways. That type of experience really creates a bond that surpasses the normal salesman-customer relationship. It's good to see that type of experience exists here (and the dealership actually has a Buell sign on their building!).

Dave,

Carlos enjoys his to pieces! Very eloquently put! He sure does, doesn't he?

Spike,
Don't remind me about jaywalking...I got a ticket for jaywalking in downtown Milwaukee on the way to see a White Zombie concert (now that kinda dates me, doesn't it?). Hope all turns out well for you. It seems to me that he is the one who violated the law. But in this sue-happy society it's hard to say nowadays.

I must admit that I have no idea who White Zombie is. But then again you're talking to someone who asked "Who's Elvis" when I was informed that he had died. But Rebecca knows who they are. She says you're not showing your age until you start talking about going to see the Sex Pistols or The Ramones.

Jim-mechanical extended warranties can be a good deal. Just one major malfunction beyond the factory warranty period pays for the cost of the contract. We have one on Pauletta's Sportster. Don't have one on my Lightning because I knew I'd be tinkering with the thing too much and didn't want to risk breaking the terms of the contract.

Tire warranties on the other hand, on a motorcycle like a Buell are about worthless. The amount they pay is usually based on tread depth, and with any sport bike tire, it's either new, or worn-out. The costs of those contracts are such that you'd have to use it several times before getting your money's worth out of it. I'm dubious about regular maintainance contracts as well as they don't offer enough savings to be worth the cost that is usually financed. Pay for regular maintainance out of pocket.

Speaking of White Zombie-has anyone seen Rob Zombie lately? He's kinda cleaned himself up, doesn't look like he's been living under a leaking Chevy any longer.

Jim,

The "spikes" comment was a joke. I am not wanting to admit that I am turning into a fair weather rider because I no longer feel comfortable riding in temperatures below freezing.

I finally got back on a bike Wednesday. Twelve days after the spill, I'm back up and riding. I'm still waiting on parts for the Uly so the M2 got me back up and riding. I had to go to school and I only have a Motorcycle Parking Pass, so at lunch I went home and pulled out the M2. You know, I prefer the Carb to the fuel injection. M2 fired right up after a three week hiatus and it has better light throttle response than the Uly. The POS trans did not make the toes or the ankle feel better that's for sure, but I did ride 70 miles Wednesday and rode again to work Thursday.

Thursday was about perfect riding weather to me. In the morning it was in the forties, and it the afternoon it was in the fifties. Cool enough that you are comfortable in riding gear and don't have to clean the bugs off you and the bike, yet warm enough that you don't have to worry about Ice. I really enjoyed the ride.

"Rebecca pointed out that this is my third bike in 17 months. I thought of you."

You have me beat. The Uly was my third bike in 28 months. Though I predict that you will slow down on your motorcycle purchases. The Uly is a great all-around motorcycle. If I were to buy another motorcycle now, it would be something totally different. A full blown Crotch Rocket or a fat/phat Cruiser or something like that, though I really have no interest right now in another motorcycle.

"Carlos enjoys his to pieces!"

I guess "enjoys his to clutch levers," wouldn't make any sense.

About $225.00 worth of pieces to be exact.

That doesn't bother me as much as this foot that seemed to be coming along nicely until yesterday. The ball of my foot started hurting yesterday at work and I had stay off it last night. This has me on a quest for the perfect boot. The ones I had on saved my foot and especially my toes from more serious injury, but with better protecting boots, I could have walked away without a scratch. So this has me on a quest.

You know you have gotten a serious boot when your 4 year old daughter looks at you new boots and asks "Why do you have a monster boot?" From the mouth of babes. I tried these Iron Age boots I found online, but they did not fit very comfortably. The concept I thought would have been perfect. Leather 10" boot, Steel Toe, Metatarsle Guard, Steel Shank and Kevlar lined. The boot is waterproof and Goretex lined which is perfect for that all weather rider. It was a snug fit and for that kind of money, I think I'm going to send them back.

Any ideas on where I can find protective foot wear that can be used on the bike and at work?

It's cold today , but I went riding anyway. Now I'm under the covers, sipping coffee, and trying to warm back up.

The bike is nice. My bag fits on the back like a glove, and Buell has thoughtfully put bag hooks under the seat.

Bag

I used the helmet lock, just to say I had. I swerved around a box laying in the road. It definitly does not swerve as easily as the Blast! I would have played more, but after you've been in the cold for a while, it stops being fun.

I think I'm going to like this bike a lot. The riding position suites me better than the others. I'm way too tall for the Blast. The Cyclone fits better, but it's pegs are more rearset, which makes my legs hurt after a while. I like the midset pegs on this bike.

I've got an idea. I've got an 11 year old daughter who rides with me sometimes. I know Carlos has a daughter about the same age, and Mike has a son thats in that ballpark. I don't know about the rest of you, but chime in and tell us about your kids.

Anyway, I think my daughter would enjoy going on a group ride where there were other people her age. I would certainly enjoy it. Would you all like to try do a parent/child ride in the spring? (People w/o childeren are welcome, I'd just like some kids there.)

Since I'm floating this idea, let me propose an agenda. I'm not wedded to this if someone has a better idea, but I think it's a lot more likely to happen if we start with a concrete idea.

Morrow Mountain State Park is located near Albemaral, NC, about 100 miles west of Raleigh. It's in the Uwahare national forest, which has good roads to ride. It is the only state park with a swiming pool, which endears it to my child.

Lets ride up there next May or June. We can enjoy the roads, have lunch in Albemaral, take a dip in the pool, and head back home. Any interest?
Carlos, you and Carlie would be welcome to spend a night here as it would be a long trip for you.

Nah, a White Zombie show doesn't date you until you admit what album they were pushing at the time. I *almost* saw them when they were touring after they released Astro Creep, but I ended up going out of town with my parents that weekend. I can't even remember where we went now, but I still remember missing White Zombie. : (

Speaking of jaywalking tickets . . . I lost my license for a while because of a jaywalking ticket. Up until that point I didn't even realize jaywalking was illegal, so not paying the ticket was my own way of rebelling. I didn't think it made sense to take away my license for something I did when I wasn't even in my car, but the DMV and I don't agree on a lot of things

Jim. Thats great news about your new bike. I was out riding for a while today too and it wasn't that bad with all my cold weather gear on. First time I have been riding since my auto accident Sept 14th. This is the perfect time/weather to break in a new bike. With cold temps the motor shouldn't overheat like it could in the summer. This was the first week back to work. Five whole days in a row. I'm beat. Need some time off!!! Let me know when your out riding and I'll try to meet ya for coffee.

Hey Jim,

Missed your call this afternoon -- crashed at the Hilton about 8:00 AM -- and after working all night I had to cut off the phones for a bit of shut-eye.

Sounds like the Uly has found a good home. I kind of like your plan on riding 100 miles west of RDU,,,I can probably gather up some Buelligans to join up (my 'kids' ride their own though ; ).)

I'm not ready for the whole grandpa gig at this point in my life. I better first see some graduate degrees before the whole pro-creation thing kicks off -- the gravy train ends when Dad's not the main man in their lives ; )

Brankin,
I was surprised in the mail today by a Christmas card. Very nice gesture and a Merry Christmas to you and your C-3 group as well. We have put together a fledgling BRAG group together sponsored by Bloomington, IN dealership (where Bubba worked for a while). We are gonna attempt a homecoming excursion. This hoosier won't be alone in '06. I really enjoyed '05 with Frank! How's he doing? Take care, all! Chad (skeeter)

Hi Jim...pretty nice bike you just purchased. The black looks so much better than the butterscotch.I bought my '03 black xb9s from the Ray Price dealer last Feb with only 2150 miles. I'll have to send my son to the dealer to check out the shirts...for my hopefully xmas present. He lives just off Gorman St. Hope to meet you this spring, or summer in the sandhills of NC.

Jim, the "kids" ride sounds great. I know Carlee would be into a long ride on the Uly. She is still 10, but by time we get this ride off she will be 11.

Greg, there is something wrong here. We are only two years apart in age and your kids ride their own while my youngest is 19 months old. That got Kristi and I thinking if we had had a Baby the first we started dating, it could buy alcohol today. Man, I not ready for Carlee to become a teenage let alone be old enough to make me a grandfather.

Uhm, heellloo! We've been trying to get you down this way for a year now. Marrow Mountain is one of our destination's on our weekend rides, except for today.
How about a children ride over and play on Saturday. Camp out here, fire, BBQ, etc, etc..Ya'll could head out the next morning refreshed. Cool idea Jim. My 13 year old likes to ride, but not for hours upon hours in a straight line. Maybe hope for her yet. Let's get serious about it, I think you could be onto a great idea. Perhaps even a bit longer distance and hit some of the Falls that they could play in.

Notes from this morning's ride:

- wearing thermal underwear (longjohns) increases the time it takes to get dressed

- excessive layers are not particularly comfortable

- a widescreen laptop will fit into a Buell slingbag (barely)

- putting on a slingbag containing a large non-flexible object while wearing excessive layers can be tricky

- two weeks in an unheated garage in cold temperatures is enough to reset the clock on an XB

- an XB with a drummer idling in my garage with the door shut produces an odd resonance that causes things in the bedroom to rattle

- a Shoei RF900 is ineffective at preventing or eliminating fog

- bright sunlight through a foggy face shield produces intense glare

- the stoplight on 401 at the main entrance to WTCC still does not change for motorcycles

- 26 degrees is cold
