Jim (U4euh),
I had made tentative plans to go to Raleigh to check it out, but as soaked as I got Friday night, er...Satruday morning leaving the all night party I was at I didn't want to ride in rain the next day. It's good that things 'worked out' for you.

Spike,
What exactly is mangina season? I got a hunch about it, but I don't want to go jumping to any conclusions...Something tells me it's gonna be funny, though.

M2nc,
Too busy riding that Ulysses and posting about doing wheelies with your daughter on the back on the 'Uly board' to post here? What's up with the LaVale pics? Didn't we miss a meeting? Seems like it should have been the day that we (you, me and Dave) went riding trying to break, I mean break in your Uly. (Too late to call ya so I had to harass ya here...)

Everyone,
I've been thinking (that is where the smoke is coming from)...since I haven't made it to Michael's during the summer months, and the fair fall weather should hopefully bring out an eclectic mix of riders, and my most favorite holiday is approaching...would anyone be interested in doing a Michael's run on Sunday, October 30th? Just a thought at this point, but could most certainly be turned into action. If Spike is unable to make it he will have to remind us all of the route we took back to the Fuquay area earlier this year (or any better roads he's scoped out by now).

1313,

Be careful, it's been my experience that things stop working when you let the smoke out.

About mangina season . . . I don't know that there's a way to explain it without sound like a middle-schooler.

It's what happens when you ride in the cold too long and your boys start to retreat. They go inside seeking warmth and you're left with what seems like . . . well . . . a "mangina". By the way- did you ever see Baseketball? I'm reminded of the bit where he refers to the Foster's beer commercials and says, "How to speak San Fransican . . ."

About Michael's- It's definitely a different experience in the cold. Dramatically smaller crowd, less trendy. You'll still have the dedicated BMW set though. When it's really cold it's easier to find a table, but there's a transitionary period where they stop setting up tables outside and the inside becomes as crowded as it is in the summer. I'm up for another ride to Michaels, but the 30th is no good for me. Looking into November I should be available on the 6th and the 20th as long as I know in advance.

Mike L.

How about this Sunday for Michaels?

They go inside seeking warmth ...

LOL - I thought it was just me. I did a 120 miles in the cold once. Stopped at a filling station, went into the restroom, and discover that its GONE.

Spike,
I thought it was only electrical/electronic things that quit working when you let the smoke out of them. Maybe next time I should wear some earplugs... Mangina - got it, but I usually refer to that as 'when your outie becomes and innie'. Same same, but different.

Jim (Nance),
This Sunday won't work for me. I can't have any fun until I have the dough saved for (and have purchased) my plane tickets home for Christmas. I should be there by the end of the month, hopefully no later as I wouldn't want to spoil my Halloween. I guess I will just have to live vicariously until then...

Jim (Rainey),
That is one thing I really enjoy about working for a German company. Drinking is not discouraged. In fact, it was my boss (a German) who threw the party. In typical Milwaukee-raised beer drinkin' fashion I was the first to arrive and the last to leave. Most Germans seem to think that Americans can't drink...until they hang out with me. Maybe that's why I haven't had any travel to Germany lately...

Dave, Carlos-
I've been too busy to give you guys a call, and you both seem kind of silent lately. What's up? What's new? Does the XB9S airbox cover fit the XB12X and vice versa or are they indeed different?

Oh yeah, I must add before having any serious fun I will have to do the 105,000 mile maintenance to my S2 also...

It's funny how the miles accumulate at a slower after a certain point, especially when I prefer the Buell over the V-Rod any day.

Here is the picture that cost me a clutch lever.

With a Smile

Day one after riding some break in miles, I get home and the wife and I decide to take pictures of the new toy. We decided to take the pictures in the yard. So I ride in the yard and get the brain fart to use the front hill as banking for my U-turn to get in position. I find the stops on the steering head much sooner than I expected so I instinctively pull the clutch and brake and stop the bike. I put my left foot down (down hill) which would have worked if I had a 51" inseam. Since I don't the bike rolls over. I jumped off and roll down the hill to see my brand new bike down on the grass. Since the steering was locked over to the left, the bike landed on the left brush guard. These guards are just clipped on the bar ends so it gives way and hits the lever which breaks the ball off the end. Yeah, I was happy, can't you see it in my smile.

The bike is great even with the shorter clutch lever. I hit 500 miles today and opened it up for the first time. It scoots quite nicely. I posted on another page that the bike does wheelie very easy while riding two up. It really wheelies just as well as any XB12. The deal though is the comfort of the bike. It is amazing. The small windshield does work. I hit some seriuos speed today and could ride straight up. It really amazes me how comfortable, yet agile it is. Going past the airport today the bike proved it can do whatever any other Buell could do. I went through the 10mph curve between 40-45mph which wasn't bad considering the road was covered in dirt

The trip to La Vale was fun. Thursday the roads were okay, very scenic and really perfect for riding two up with the wife. I think I behaved, She squeezed me and hit me in the back of the helmet once. I thought i did okay.

I did get a chance to go down and up the hill at SR42. Kristi and I went down first, then we met into Jose's group at the bottom. We followed them up and then the group took turns going up and down the hill.

From the pictures on the Appalachian thread you can see it rain Friday. It was still a good time. Here was a good picture in Davis WV where we stopped for lunch.

Kristi & Me

We rode two up 180 miles on Thursday so Kristi and the M2 did great.

As for this weekend I have to agree with Brankin that I will not be able to make it. I would like to retake the picture for Fuell. I have on big orange reason but i thought we might be able to get some of those that did not make it last time like Dave and Brandy. What do you think? If Mike is available on November the 6th, how about making it for that day?

Sitting in a internet cafe on Topsail Island, drinking coffee and taking a break. Been touring on the 9R for a few days around coastal NC. Bike's been flawless, loaded or unloaded. Upgraded the pullys and belt to 06' spec. so I feel pretty confident with the bike. Got a new pair of Avon 45/46 tires before I left. I like em'. U4, let's hit the twisties in the Uwharrie's this week end! Heading away from the coast soon and going to tour some back roads of lower eastern NC swamp country and make my way home.

Came home via Hwy. 210. Pretty cool road with lots of sweepers. Little traffic. Ran 80-110 mph for miles with the full Ventura pack system stuffed. Only problem was my damn jacket flapping so I just laid down on the tank. Bike was great. Ehhhhh, speak up. I'm a little deaf from the Special Ops pipe bellowing for hours.

1313 is getting anxious!!

As for me, well Mike W. and myself have been riding:

Had a blast on Sunday! Took most of these as grabs from video.
http://media.putfile.com/curveswithgoodsoundclip
I know it is short, but you can get the idea of what my airbox soundslike sitting over the top of it. Notice the Red Car. He left Mike about 3-4 feet of room, cuz he was over the line(the car,not Mike). You can see me stand it up a bit then drop down deep giving the jerk plenty of room. You guys gotta make out this way, we found even more roads!!!!!!!

Just working on the head light adjustment on the Uly. I'm halfway there. I stripped the head of the lower adjustment screw and I do not have a replacement so I did the best I could with the upper adjustment and now it at least works.

I'm still playing with the suspension. Cracked the preload back down for reach, soften rebound and compression adjustment back for single riding. You know I never messed with the adjustment on the M2 because I like it from the start. But let some Harley mechanics set up a Buell and that gives you all the reason to readjust it.

While testing the headlights tonight, I road down a dirt road that really goes off the beaten path. It was too cool with the full moon and being away from everything else. It has been too long since I've been on a dirt bike. I hit my first soft sand rut and about freaked out. After relaxing on the bars, the rest of the ride was fun. I should have had the camera.

105,000 mile service will be completed tomorrow morning. I'm letting the primary drain out all the nasty used Sport Trans Fluid overnight. Just have to go out in the morning (or will it be afternoon?) and put the plug back in, add new fluid, adjust primary chain, clutch and clutch cable and it will be good to go.

Picking up the oil and trans fluid today I checked out the 2nd Ulysses that Shelton's got in and had a nice chat with John. He plans to head out to the Gap in the near future on his XB9S. Notice that I didn't say anything about picking up an oil filter? I've used the same oil filter for the last 69,000 miles!

What's everyone else been up to since it's been so damned quiet around here lately?!?!

Last two nights I went with the family to the New Bern Ghost Walk and we had a good time.

On Friday I had to meet the clan there because I was working and Kristi had to take a friend to pick up her car. So I rode the M2 (Uly is in for its 1000 mile service) to New Bern HD and bought some oil. I had time to do some riding and found a long cut to Maysville on the ride.

I rode down Brices Creek Rd to Pollocksville, then shimmied over to Snake Rd (what Kinstonians call it) and then instead of taking a left at the end of Snake Rd., I turned right. The road twists its way back some five to ten miles before it dead ends into a dirt road. The condition of the road was poor. They were doing this tar and gravel routine to the edges of the road and there was gravel in the middle of the curves where cages don't ride. In time though when they finish it will be a fun road. Allot of switch backs and 35mph curves. It is similar to the tightest portions of Snake Rd. The further down the road you go, the better the road condition. It seems they started there repairs at the end of the road.

Since I was not on the Uly, I turned around at the Dirt portion of the road and found another road that turned to the left just a few hundred feet back from the dirt. This road was called New River Rd. and it was awesome. The road had very little straightaways. It was either switch back or ran into a long radius curve, one after another. The road condition was not great but better than the first road. It was not flat either. On a couple of the switch backs the curves were banked. The worst part of the road were the dips and uneven, plus small bridges (like Old Maple Hill Road). The entire road was challenging to ride but very fun. I would have to say it comes in second to Old Maple Hill Rd, but has features about it that make it almost as much fun. The road pops out on by the large grain silos just south of Maysville (Other side of the river from the camp ground) on Highway 17.

The next time we take we ride from New Bern to Jacksonville, I will have to take you guys down it.

About the only thing new with me is I can now stand up to pee!!!! I'm still out of work from my auto accident the 14th of last month. Hope to be able to put some weight on my right foot in about three weeks. If so I'll be on my City X enjoying what's left of the fall colors. My 67 mustang was totaled. Picked up a used Jeep SUV with big air bags and hope to be driving soon. Has anyone been to Michael's Sunday mornings?

Kinda reminds me of a Frank Zappa tune, but I digress.

Gramps,
It's good to hear that you are progressing in your recovery. Hope that the rest continues at Lightning speed.

M2nc,
I had to go to a party this afternoon in Pollocksville. If I had more time and the temp was a little bit warmer I might have wandered off to search for New River Rd. We'll definitely have to hit it on our next excursion in that direction.

Gramps, good to hear from you. I hope to see you up and riding soon.

lightning speed

Speaking of lightning speed, I saw a tree get hit by lightning in the neighbor's yard Saturday morning at around 1am. The dog was barking at the thunder and woke me up. I was trying to settle him down when a FLASH!, BOOM! falling white sparks. I happened to be looking out the windows in the right direction when the lightning hit the tree. The flash was so bright that Kristi came down asking where it hit. It was the closest lightning strike I've ever actually seen and it was too cool. No damage from the hit, the last time lightning hit that close it fried my modem, but not this time.

Spike,

I think it may be too early to attempt using your 'digging rights', but then again some of your searches could target or stumble upon the right thing...

Just out of curiosity, any idea when the Winter Dealer Meeting is?

Regarding Yamaha's - I've only ridden one. It was a first year R1 that was in Buell's 'competitive bike evaluation fleet'. It was boring at legal road speeds and was only fun to ride when you were breaking the law. Plus I never liked IL4's...
