I'm (informally) planning a Death valley trip during the Martin Luther King weekend Jan 13-16, 2005.

If you haven't been to Death Valley before, you don't know what you are missing, and January is a great time of year (weather wise) to go.
http://www.nps.gov/deva/

CA-190 has been re-opened as have other access roads (since the flood damage of Aug, 2004).

There are some awesome roads, scenery and destination points to ride to from the centrally located Furnace Creek area. My plan is to camp - lows during Jan are in the 50-60's and camp fires are allowed - but motel accommodations are also available.

As well as great sealed roads, there are also some great fire roads that provide access to additional destination and vista points - and as a proud new Uly owner, herein is where my motivation lies

Anyway, I'm going for sure, and with me so far are 3 other riders, 2 BMW's and a Suzuki. I also know that during that weekend, there will be a bunch of Beemer riders in the area, although, I believe they'll be moteling in Beatty somewhere.

So, just putting the feelers out to see if I can interest any from this group - and not just the Uly riders

Death Valley is awesome, and probably one of California's best gems...

Cheers
-Jack

So, anybody here considering this event?

As an FYI - regarding attendance - here are some stats as of today 1.13.06

53 campers
19 camping (rv)
52 hotel

67 California
27 Arizona
10 Nevada
22 Other

(this is not counting spouses)

for a grand total of 126 plus about 20 spouses.

The wife and I have a walk-in camp spot reserved.
Our plan is to leave Thursday evening, 26th, at around 4:30pm from Burbank area and ride as far as Barstow, where we'll overnight in luxury digs (Quality Inn). We'll then head out early Friday morning. Taking it easy, we should arrive in Furnace Creek by noon.

Can't wait

Got back last night - we had a great time

I left the office on Thursday afternoon around 2:30 pm, and met up with the wife, Cindy, at her place of employment in Glendale area

We were on the road by 4pm, on our way to Barstow where we would overnight, making the rest of the trip on Friday morning.

Bit of a late start Friday morning, so we stopped of for an early lunch at Mad Greeks in Baker

Next stop, DV Junction - intersection of Hwy 127 and 190

We arrived around 3pm, and decided to just set up our tent, wonder around the campsite, looking at bikes, and chat with folks.

Fast forward to the next morning - spot the only 'other' Uly?

A mix of other bikes, but mainly Katooms, GS' and KLRs

Frank's Uly

Cindy and I rode out together to explore some of the sites. Our first visit was to the abandon mining town of Rhyolite - a once booming town with a population of 10,000 people

If there was a dirt alternative, Cindy would take the sealed road route and I'd meet her at our destination...

Then it was off to Scotty's Castle

Then Ubehebe crater.

I had planned to ride Titus Canyon, but it was closed 3 miles up toward the mouth due to rock slide

Awesome place

Then it was back to camp for the evening festivities

Nothing quite like a beer with new friends after a big day out riding

Sunday morning, there was like this mass exodus, so we packed our things and headed for home

Still time to check out a few trails on the way home

After gassing up in Olancha, we bolted home on the 395.

The trip was short, but a lot of fun. death Valley has so much to offer - every time we go back there we see something new.

The Uly handled itself admirably, and while the off road opportunities were limited, I now have a better understanding of what this thing is capable off.

Maybe next year, some more of you guys might like to join us - or, how about a Uly Death Valley weekend - wouldn't that be sweet

Few more pictures posted here...

Cheers
-Jack

Jack,

When I was in LA #1 Hogs, we always camped in DV around Superbowl weekend and always had a great time. Got to know the place pretty well. Glad you and yours had a great time too.

You should try the route into DV via Trona and take the historic old road that bypasses much of 190. Verrry scenic, twisty and interesting.

There's one point where the road forks right and up going to the Charcoal Kilns. This time of year there might even be snow and ruts to navigate through. It's an interesing diversion if you're into exploring.

Great photos, Rhinowerks. I rode to DV last Nov. on my new Uly from the Seattle area. Stayed at Stovepipe Wells 2 nights & seen Scottys castle, Ubehebe crater, Artists pallete, Badwater Basin, and
rode through Wildrose alone at night.(what a rush) Weather was awesome,(it was in the 40's & 50's at home). Left DV through Scotty's Junction & rode through Lida, NV to Big Pine CA. AWESOME road. Could of caught air on some of them whoopdees (but that would be outside the law!!). I plan to do it again someday. 2600mi. The Uly is very comfy.
