I have some break in miles to burn, who is in.

Wanna ride to Raleigh? I'd come down there to see it, but I've got the kids this weekend.

Some pics of today's Breakin' the Uly in Ride:

Proving that how big a bike is has nothing to do with the shadow it casts, but placement of the helmet...

I don't care what anyone else thinks (not that I ever have), but compare these next 2 pics:

Will the real Crow T. Robot please stand up?

I'd like to pass along one reminder that was pointed out to me firsthand today. When you are on reserve and you you are a little heavier on the throttle in order to beat traffic across a 4-lane divided highway, your front tire WILL launch into the air like there's no tomorrow when you go over the crest in the center of the highway. I knew it would come up, I just wasn't expecting it to come up THAT much. I don't think the cross traffic was expecting the show either...

What? Nobody remembers what reserve is? Maybe I should go back over to the Old School Buell board...they'll know what I am talking about...

Ode to Ulysses

Q: What does the above symbolize?

A: I was bored the other night, nothing more, nothing less.

Carlos, Jlnance and anyone else going to the BRAG Adventure in Maryland: Have a great time, take pictures and bring stories back.

Carlos, when I talked with Court last night he said that he would have your Ulysses called back to the factory if you don't take it to the BRAG Adventure. That being said, what Buell are you taking to Maryland?

BTW, I was only kidding about Court saying that, but he did call me (3 times!) last night.

Does anyone recognize the artwork on this '98 S3-T?

dedsld: For an inseam challenged rider who wants a sport-tourer, would swapping the suspension from a Ulysses with that from a Lightning Long produce any negative handling aspects?
Jon: It's not that easy, the first negative effect would be the rear tire would hit the Ulysses trunk pan. The Ulysses has more ground clearance when the suspension is fully bottomed out than the Lightning Long does. We took advantage of that space on Ulysses to make the trunk bigger, so no the suspension is not swappable between the two.

Random Buell bit excerpted from the live chat.
But the funniest one had to be:

jazzman: Dan, so you are the rocket scientist on the team... Can you figure out how to get a vrsc engine on a Buell?
Dan: That's easy. You drain the water out of it, take it apart, and it should fit neatly into the saddle bags and top box of a Ulysses. Careful - that will exceed the weight rating of the box and bags though.....

Once Carlos gets the bags and top case for his Ulysses I guess I will have to keep a closer eye on the wherabouts and condition of my V-Rod...

Spike- You gots some 'splaining to do...

1313,

I was riding to work the other day when I realized it was October 4th (it was actually the 5th, which doesn't change the story) and that I had purchased my bike on October 2nd. That meant I had owned my bike for just over two years, which was cool. What was not cool was realizing that all the paperwork for my bike was done on the 2nd, which meant my insurance was likely to expire on the 2nd, and I had not received anything about a renewal. I checked my insurance card when I got to work, sure enough my insurance was expired. Riding without insurance is bad enough, but riding without insurance on a bike that's financed is extra-bad. I'm not sure how much extra, but I know the lien holder requires the bike to be covered for the duration of the loan. I called my insurance "company" and found out that the "company" that wrote my last policy no longer covered motorcycles. They now work with another "company" that will renew my policy for only $1,934 per year. My budget does not have room for increased insurance premiums, so I was in a jam . . . a jam that should have been fixed 3 days prior had I only known about it. I frantically called around to a bunch of insurance companies and got quotes ranging from $1800/year to $3600/year. I called to see about extending the equity line on my house so I could pay off the loan from HD and insure the bike with liability-only, but they said that they'd have to raise my interest rate in order to loan me more money.

With my budget fully stretched and no affordable insurance in sight, the only viable option appeared to be selling the bike. I posted a classified add here on Badweb and called Eric at Ray Price to see if he would be interested in buying the bike. The best he could do would be consignment, but he said that Larry at RP knew of a company that had better insurance prices than anyone around. I called them and they were able to get me covered under Viking insurance for $1050/year. That's still expensive for insurance on a two year old motorcycle, but it's back in a range I can afford. My budget is still a mess, but at least now I can keep the bike.

Spike-thats GGRRREEEEAAATTTT!
I don't know who you have your homeowners through, but we have homeowners and vehicles on the same policy. Because we have two cars, that qualifies for multicar discount. Then adding the bike on as a recreational vehicle stays in that category. I can't say how much we are paying cuz ya'll probably wouldn't believe it, but I can say that it is alot less than your new figure. Something to chew on, but congrats, I seen your classified is not there anymore! JIM

Just got back from Lavale. Thanks to Carlos and Kristi for the ride. It would have SUCKED BAD to have tried to ridden back in this weather. The truck was a blessing.

We had a good time. I'll post more about it later when I get some extra time.

Brankin, were you the lead engineer for the Blast?

Jlnance,

For a period of time I was. During the development of the Blast! (project name Thor) Tony Stefanelli was the Lead Engineer responsible for the project reaching production. During the project I only did some developmental testing for Thor. As a side note, for some interesting spy photos of Thor (surfacing just before my first trip to Arizona), check out this link:
http://www.gazette9.com/buells.html/buells.htm
The Molten Orange M2 shown in some of the spy shots is the one that I ended up killing during my time in Arizona. And the one that the front wheel skidded during my last attempt at a stoppie...
Towards the end of my time at Buell I inherited the Lead Engineer position for both the tube framed twins platform and the Blast! platform. Being that 2002 was to be the last year of production for the tubers the edict was 'don't make any changes, just keep the bikes in production', except for the 'development' of the X1W. Unfortunately the X1W was basically only colors and graphics and didn't have the extra 'kick in the pants' that the original White Lightnings did, but at least the test riding required for the blue header made the X1W project interesting. A company paid for trip to St. Louis and Deal's Gap in order to get 4,000 miles each on 2 different bikes in about 4 weeks time. And the Blast! was always intended as a minimal change platform (Did I hear someone say colors and graphics?). There were some cool things that we were working on that were planned for the '03 Blast! (to commonize with the up and coming Aries, aka XB9R) which appear to have never happened. I still have a set of prototype '02 Blast! tank cover decals that have thicker silver outlines than what was used in production. I think I'm starting to ramble so I will shut up now.

Back to your normally scheduled programming,

Carlos - I can reduce them if you would like. Just email the originals to me or post them somewhere I can download them.

Spike - I just went through this. The NCDOT is going to try and fine you $50 for letting your liability coverage lapse. If you can get your insurance company to start your coverage on the day the last policy expired, you can avoid this. Call and ask. You'll get the note from the DMV in the mail when they are notified by your old company that coverage lapsed. Whatever you do, don't go to the DOT online form. If there is any discrepency with what you enter and what the insurance company says, it creates all sorts of hard to fix problems. Get the insurance company to send an FS1 form to the DMV.

Brankin - Cool! You didn't design the wheel bearings did you?

Blast! wheel bearings? Nope, didn't design them, just used them in vehicle testing.

I do, however, have an interesting story about some prototype Thor wheels. The early prototype wheels were off some Kawasaki or other japanese motorcycle. Parts were sourced from numerous cycle salvage yards and once we got some from California. A good friend of mine was unpacking a box of wheels that came in from California and was surprised to find an 8-legged creature in the package with a little red hourglass shape on its body. Another person took the black widow home as a pet and was able to keep it alive for a couple of years. Amazing that it could handle the climate in Wisconsin for that long.

Just a couple of weeks ago it was interesting when I got word from the Bosch off site test facility that a black widow was found inside a dryer right here in New Bern... It was stopped for inspection during lifetime testing and after the drum was removed ...

1313 - I lost a wheel bearing in Lavale.

Thats a great picture of the widow, or "widder" as a friend of mine calls them. I see two spiders in the picture. I guess the brown one is the male? I suspect he isn't long for this world.

Well folks got back from the Ray Price Party Yesterday. Left home at 2:00pm Saturday to meet up with a buddy who rides a 99 softtail( yes the one I posted about the clutch change) All was well on the way over there. He tried to start the bike to find nothing! Changed battery, started, we're off! Got to Carthage and refueled, start--NOTHING! Push start his bike and ride to Advance. Change battery to only thing they have, its a bit too big!. We made it work. Now up to this point, it has been cloudy, real cloudy. We get to Sanford, the sun comes out- yeehaaa! Three miles north of Sanford, the bucket broke and he had to slow down to 40mph. We stop at 1st overpass. Overheard his wife ask him about full face helmets, "Yea I got them but they don't match the bike". Dumbazz!! So we stop at just about every fricken bridge between Sanford and Raliegh. About 8:00 we hit the Apex area. I am laughing my arse off right about this time, cuz We are all soaked done to underwear!! To make it worse I had printed directions to the motel we were staying at, they offered bikers going to the rally free pizza, tickets for golf, secured bike parking, and a 4 minute ride to the festivities. Well I gave those directions to another friend who was driving a truck. After following him around down town raleigh for 1/2 hour we find the Moore Square where the party is, and I'm like "what the #*@$" we're supposed to be at the motel to check in. So after standing in the rain(like it matterd at this point) and getting directions to the room, we check in at about 8:45 we check in to find No secured parking, NO free pizza, nothing. My tank bag cover let a little rain get through, only onto the clothes that mattered. So all I got to wear is my rain pants and a shirt, wet socks, wet boots. Arron Tippin put on a good show to about 2000 people who braved it to come out. All in all it was a comical weekend for me and the wife, as the other couple with no rain gear, no windshield, and no full face helmet-don't think they enjoyed it as much. As for the motel situation- after some persuasive arguing with the manager, we got free rooms for next years event, and free pizza at the local Pizza Hut! Satisfied my anger! Not that it was a big deal, but after what we went through to get there, I was hungary!! Wish you all would have been there. JIM
