Hi everyone,
Thought it was time to add a section especially for us Canadian riders.
(Good idea SportyEric)

We're trying to get some riders together for a ride this Sunday, July 7. Don and I are able to ride from about 9:30 til 1:30.

Any takers? Let us know and post your ride ideas here.

Ride on...

Lorraine

Great idea! I can't make this sunday though.I've only had the X1 since September and have only been on the group cruise up to Squamish at the beginning of the season organized by Stu. Tuesday works for me if people want to meet somewhere for "The Swiss Type Thing". Just a thought - the ride up to Harrison through Mission (Settlers Pub would be a good destination) may be a good first go. I live in Cloverdale but we could meet wherever.

Hi Bib,
I was sitting beside ya at the pub in Squamish. Was a good time... even without food! Hope you're coming on SPLASH in a couple of weeks! It's tough to do the evening thing with our schedule. It would probably be a spur of the moment setup. If you get any takers, post it here so we can join you if the planet, moon and stars happen to line up perfectly.

Buellbob and any other riders,
Let's Ride: Sunday, July 7, 2002
We'll meet you at 9:30-9:45am at the Chevron on Kingsway and Curragh (near Gilley) in Burnaby. (6138 Kingsway to be precise)
Any other takers? We could have a second meeting place. Just let us know whereabouts you live.
As for destination... we can only ride for about 3 hours so we can't get too far.
(Would be nice to do Lillooet with SportyEric but time just doesn't permit, this time round.)
Any suggestions?

Ride on…

The Duffy Lake Road is my preference because it is so un-patrolled. And also because the ride to get to it is nice in itself. Would you be up for just going to Whistler and turning back when you have to? I know Sunday to Whistler it's going to be a traffic jam but WTF. Mt.Baker and Watcom Lake is another option, but the border crossing is a PITA, although Sumas is usually OK. Long way to get there though.
Can you get away any earlier to make the Mcdonalds at Hastings and Cassiar by 9:30, or should I move back that time to ten?

Actually, except for Jim, I guess I haven't directly contacted anyone else so why don't we go for your Chevron at as close to 9:30 as possible? Destination is flexible, though if we did Baker we might want to post it in advance in case that's a problem for anyone. Mission is also possible but I find it has a lot of hidden driveways that worry me. Three choices. We can hash it out later. The weather might be a deciding factor also. I haven't checked, but wifey says its not looking good. We'll just do a rain chant and everything will be OK. They call me "Dances-With-Storms."

One other, unrelated thought: It would be good to hear from Okanagan riders and others here as well. Meet in the middle stuff.

Hey SportyEric, BuellBob and anyone else wanting to meet up for a ride on Sunday...

Looking forward to riding with ya... We can talk about the destination when we get together, get a concensus from everyone. Probably have to let the clouds decide our direction.

We could meet as mentioned at the Chevron on Kingsway near Gilley between 9:30-9:45am... only since we posted it already and don't want to cause confusion.

(If the weather looks threatening in the morning, we probably won't show.)

Hope to see you there!
Ride on...

Well... it's a good thing the "positive" Attitude (me) dragged out the "negative" Attitude (Don) today!

Couldn't have asked for better riding weather to Whistler! The rain held off with only a wee bit of spit on the visor. We had a group of six riders, so was a pretty good turn out for our first (un)organized ride.
No mishaps or tickets. Although I thought we were goners there at Horseshoe Bay. BuellBob, did you see the cop turn on his lights and turn around? I was wondering if we were the targets or what? Oh well... glad I didn't find out!
I hope SportyEric and Jim had a good ride up Duffy Lake Road. Fill us in SportyEric... got a story to tell?

Doug, good for you to stop by and meet up this morning. We'll have to go riding... and get a better look at that sweet bike.

Ride on,
On the Wet Coast...

Well. That was a nice get together. The ride to Whistler was predictable, with a non-stop parade of cars plugging up the road. But a nice drive, none-the-less. 'Twas a bit bass ackwards for my preferred style. I like fast around the corners and slow on the straights to avoid radar. Instead we tended to only get a chance to get on the gas on the passing lanes. Still made for some good fun, trying to reel in Don, and Lorraine on her Blast! (No. The exclamation mark is there because I couldn't reel her in! Although in hind-sight, the limiting factor for me was setting an arbitrary speed that I didn't want to exceed on the straights for fear of police. Looking back, I don't think that getting caught at 70mph over the speed limit would have any different result than getting caught at my self-imposed limit of 50 mph over. A long way to talk them down, I suspect. Fortunately the situation never arose.
When everyone else turned around after a great lunch stop at the Southside Deli in Whistler, Jim and I suited up to to head for the Duffy Lake Road. Before we got away, a guy came up and said that his bike was around the corner and wouldn't start and could we come and look at it. We obliged. To find a mid-eighties cruiser (Magna?) that looked like it had been salvaged from the Titantic. No electricity at all. I was ready to dismiss it as a lost cause for lack of a tester but we found the main fuse, which also had a spare fuse in the holder (those bloody clever Japanese engineers!) and with that he was up and running. Jim and I walked away with a swagger like the Ghostbusters, talking about the good karma we'd banked.
Leaving the Deli we went south 1/2 mile to Alta Lake Road, the old highway, which would take us around Whistler to the north side of town. Twisty but gravelled in the corners. 2 miles up the road I hit a bump and the bike died! No power anywhere. Hey! Where's all that karma!!
Through the winter I had lengthened the main wiring harness under the tank, requiring two solders on each wire. I'd also removed all the big connectors in the headlight, by soldering everything directly. So there were a few likely areas of concern. After a while of head-scatching, and cursing my poor choice of tools to carry, we discovered probably the only wire that hadn't been disturbed since leaving the factory and that was where the fault lay. We re-crimped the wire into its connecter at the circuit-breaker and hit the road, but delayed by an hour or so.
Got as far as Pemberton. Chatted with a number of riders coming down off the the Road wet and decided to cut our losses and head back south.
Ran into the few idiots in cages along the way. The best was a Hyundai that tried to re-pass Jim on the right as the passing lane ran out. Jim stayed ahead but he shut the door on me to get by as well. I stayed behind in a parade of cars but I prepped myself for an expectaion that the next passing lane would see Jim go left, the Hyundai go left, and me nail the throttle to pass the car on the right and tuck back in with Jim. Would have been good but...... Instead, we got a fifty foot section with a dotted line where nobody but me could make an effective move. The Hyundai had the window wide open so I stayed on the throttle and hit about 5500, throttle WFO as I passed. BWA-HA-HA-HA! Wish I still had the Thunderheader on!
Anyway, we made our way back to town in moderate traffic. We both managed beautifully clear road for the last two sections of great twisties between Lion's Bay and Horseshoe Bay, with few heroic passes to do it. Hard on the gas, get'em all, and hard on the brakes for the corner. Yee-hah! A great finish to a great day.

Good yarnspinning SportyEric.
Those damn cage-drivers... I'll swear they're just trying to "be a bike" sometimes.
Very annoying when my little Blast is on her highest revs and those bastards try to get the advantage.
Just have to stay smarter and watch those passing lane in 2k signs, then get a damn good run at that hill... and I shall conquer!
Well, I hope I didn't hold anyone back too much this trip. Feel free to pass me on future rides, if you can. So long as I get that all affordable run at those hills I'm fine with that.
I thought all was well til I dropped the bike in the gravel at the Deli

Ride on...

Here's a good opportunity/excuse to go for a ride:
The Canadian Motorcycle Drag Racing Association is at Mission this weekend. You have to see/hear/feel the Top Fuel Harleys launch to believe it - NASTY! I will be there for sure on Sunday and will also try to make it out on Saturday if I am finished painting the house.
If you are interested here is some info:
1st Round Qualifying is at 3:00PM Saturday
1st Round of Eliminations is at 11:00AM on Sunday
It's $20 for the day or $30 for the weekend.
The best place to watch from and park your bike is in the pits. You need to ride around the back of the staging area to the side nearest the river. There is guaranteed to be incredible bikes, vehicles and people.
See you there!

Home computer is down, using company stuff for now so theres not much time to read everything. No I didn't see the RCMP, maybe he was going somewhere else. I didn't think we were doing any thing wrong. We weren't speeding or anything were we? Had a good time and it was a pleasure to meet you all. I would like to get another look at all the custom goodies on Dougs'? bike. That was his name I think.

Thanks for the info Bib. Don't know if it's do-able this wknd, but have a good time!
BuellBob, I thought we were doing slightly over the speed limit at the intersection there... maybe I'm paranoid, dunno.
Some nice weather ahead... happy riding everyone!

Well I don't know if anyone went to the CMDRA meet at Mission Race Park this weekend but I did manage to get there for the eliminations on Sunday. The Top Fuel final was a bummer as Dave O'Hara broke during staging and Ron Houniet got the win with a 7.00/200MPH pass. I would have liked to see Dave take it again. In June he beat the #1 Plateholder by .04 seconds. There was only one Buell, a '97 S1 and he did end up with a trophy at the end of the day.
Again some of the nicest Harleys and others that you could ever want to see. I took my son who is 7 and when we were watching the mechanics work on Dave O'Hara's Hell Racing top fuel Harley, Dave came over and handed my son a poster with him and his bike on it. Made the little guy's day. Mine too. See you at SPLASH, those of you that are going.
