Ray and Lyle are fine! Tuffer-n-hell!

This years SPLASH will have an alternate long route that takes in 3 volcano's! The roads are some of the best and arrival time to Packwook would be in the 5:00 - 6:00 pm range providing we dont take long stops.

There are three gravel sections the longest being .9 of a mile. The other two are short.

Waduz every one think?

In The Rain Forest, Bob

Hey Bob,
I'm actually going to be in on this ride! Can you believe it? Are y'all riding to Woodland on Friday?

Ray & Lyle,
I hope you feel better soon! Let us know what's up.

Thanks all, for your concern. Lyle and I appreciate it.

Six of us were doing the recon work for the upcoming SPLASH ride and we were going about 200 mph around a left turn (more on that later) when Lyle's front wheel went out from under him. We don’t know yet why that happened, but it did. Maybe the road was wet, debris on the road, too much lean angle, all of the above, none of the above, we don’t know. Lyle fell on the road (scrape marks on the bike, helmet, gloves, leathers and skin to prove it) and slid into the dirt. I saw Lyle fall and I braked hard. Then, as according to the laws of physics and Keith Code, my bike stood upright and I headed to the outside of the corner. When I ran out of corner I splatted into the ditch where I was met by grass, dirt, trees, mud, deer poop, rocks and whatever else might be there (more on that later).

We were both a little loopie for a few minutes but we’re in good shape over all. Stiff and sore today but nothing damaged or broken.

Lyle's bike will probably be totaled but mine is rideable and fixable. A local EMT (or fireman, or whatever) put Lyle's bike in the back of a pickup truck and took it back to the fire station a couple of miles up the road. I followed on my bike and then Lyle and I rode double on my bike 165 miles home (more on that later). Later (much later) that night we drove back to wherever-it-is and picked up the bike and drove ourselves and the bike home and were in bed by midnight.

A genuine bad day for sure, but it could have been much worse. Had we been going around a right turn and run off the rode to the high side we would have gone over a lo-o-o-o-ng drop off and would just now be hitting the bottom. It’s not too much of a stretch to say that we might both be dead right now.

Did you understand that, guys? DEAD! Like not coming home tonight. Not posting on the BadWeB ever again. DEAD! Think about that for a few seconds and then make up your mind to ride slow and safe on SPLASH. Don’t chase the guys that didn’t read this. Being dead is a bad thing, just ask your wife or kids.

As if all of that wasn’t bad enough, we had two more little surprises in store for us before the night was over. Just after the accident, while I was napping in the ditch, a bee crawled into my jacket and later stung me on the neck when I took the jacket off in a Mac Donald’s store in Kelso. Thanks, I needed that.

And as if that wasn’t enough, the traffic northbound from Chahalis to Tacoma was HORABLE! Basically bumper to bumper, stop and go from mile marker 60 to the Tacoma Dome and points beyond. Remember now, we are both sick, injured, tired, grumpy, mad, and riding two up on a damaged bike. Lyle and I spent at least 10 miles on the left side shoulder going 20-25 mph and passing hundreds of cars, and that was the fast part. The trip back down to get the bike in my pickup truck was OK and the traffic had dissipated by the time we were northbound again.

All’s well that ends well I guess and we are both doing all right. We’ll see you at The Swiss Tavern tomorrow night at 6:30 and give you all the details.

Again, thanks for the concern. Pictures to follow.

"... and we were going about 200 mph around a left turn ..."

Say no more.
The road is for riding,
the track is for racing.
Lecture over.
Glad you survived.

Ray I'm glad you and Lyle are doing OK. I'm a little puzzled by your comments Ray. If you or anyone feels the pace is a bit too brisk, slow down and go at whats comfortable. Some seperation between the rider ahead of you "at the pace" never hurts. I hope you didn't feel like you were going too be lost if you didn't stay with us. We always re-grouped at every stop or direction change. Heck whats done is done. Fix the bike and lets go ride. Mike

Ray, sorry to hear about the get offs last weekend, glad to hear you and Lyle can tell the story.
SPLASH is a Sport Ride Around St. Helens, not a
RASH, Race Around St. Helens.
Everyone needs to ride at a their own pace. Check your ego at the door and enjoy the weekend.

Bob, the extended tour sounds great! How about some more info. Gas stops work out ok? Is Duanne's bike getting more than 80 miles per tank? Details man, details.

SPLASH The Friday night BBQ is on, Horseshoe Lake Park, Woodland WA. 5:00 PM til dusk.

We need a head count, sound off here so we know how much food to buy.

The party runs from 5:00 pm till dusk. The park does not allow alcohol, bring your own and keep it in a cup.

Take exit 21 in Woodland, go west about 50 yards (maybe 40 meters to our northern friends), hang a left, past the motel take the next right. Look for the motley group in the park having the most fun.

Can't wait to see yall, EH.

Chris, Gas stops are no problem.

The pace probly shouldnt be at a Balls out pace as there are gravel sections to look for and a few turns to take at intersections. Thats just for that section of the ride. The rest is all good road.

I'll see if I can scan a Map and post it.

Our pace this last weekend was Brisk or spirited. It definetly was not Balls out.

We saw Ray and Lyle this evening and all seemed fine.

More to come, Bob

Hey everyone!
Loni & Chris... Don and I are in for the BBQ. Thanks in advance, you guys are great!

Bob, Don wants to add his $.02 about the extended ride. He says no gravel is good gravel. Not wanting to wreck his pretty rims, he doesn't want to do the off-road thang.

Looking forward to putting "Peggy" through the paces with you all!

Ride on...

Chris - Count me in for Friday night.

All - The extra loop is well worth the effort. Mt St Helens, Mt Adams, Mt Hood, the Columbia river, single-lane mostly unused roads, western landscape, eastern landscape, canyons, more canyons, etc...

We left Olympia at 7 am and I returned at 7 pm (including THE incident). I believe we can do this at a reasonable pace and can still make the side trip to Windy Ridge and be in Packwood in time for dinner.

Don - If the Ducati can do it so can the Buell! You really don't want to miss this one. I don't want to scare people away by making an issue out of the gravel but it really isn't a bad road. I do want everyone to be informed because it requires a bit of the dirt bike mind set but its just not as bad as you are probably envisioning.

This may set a new standard for SPLASH and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again.

Pumped up in the Rain Forest,
Matt

Mdx1,

If you find a bike let me know. I'll be doing a rotation at the Harborview ER in Seattle during Aug and it would be fun to have someone to shoot the sh*t about bikes and medicine with.

Okay Ray, will do.

Speaking of which, I've always liked the phrase "ride your own ride".
Read OWB's account on SacBorg and it sounded like there were a few cruisers that got passed. Is the route you take posted someplace, or does it vary some? Reason I'm asking is I will be out there again in late August and might do a cage-lap around the mountain. Then might be moving back to the region in a year or three.

Speaking of which, I didn't see one Buell on the roads over the 4th down around Aberdeen or up along Hood Canal. Guess I wasn't paying attention. I did see a Triumph on the Kingston ferry though.

gotta go, bye.
