Richie, yes. I really wanted to want that bike.

It would make a GREAT project bike for someone who can repair plastic, maybe paint(except for those darned gas tank bubbling problems), and scrounge for parts to "un-hack" the body work, lights, dash, and a few other things. I was getting worried, because EVERYTHING was held together with electrical tape, including the oil cap, seat, turn signal, clock, reworked wiring, and so on. I was getting scared about any possible tampering within the engine where I couldn't see it. There were signs........ and I needed a reliable steed for my short trip to Colorado this August.

With the saddlebags I would want to find, I felt it would take a good $2,500 (or more) to bring it close to where I wanted to be. (I would have to offer Gails about 60% of their asking price) And then if I did, I am not sure I'd really be happy with it. It left me feeling uneasy and uncertain.

I do plan to go back after the bike comes out of service, to see what they've done. One last look to see if that is the one bike I want to have for the next 10 years or more.

The clincher was when my wife said several times in the first hour after we left: "I think it is ugly. I just looks old. Maybe we should just buy the ******. (other bike we are looking at)" I knew she was serious now, because that other bike is going to cost me a tad over $10K and she had been resisting because of that.

Like I say, when Momma's happy, everyone is happy. But when Momma ain't happy, no one is.

Anyone who's looking for a great long weekend ride, we recommend riding to Memphis to see the Art of the Motorcycle exhibit at the Pyramid arena. While the exhibit has fewer bikes than the original Guggenheim exhibit in NYC, it's well worth the trip. If you have another day, go first to the Barber Motorsport Park and Vintage Museum in Birmingham, AL, and see one of the most incredible collections of bikes -- just the variety and depth of the collection is amazing. You may also get to see some great racing on the track the backs up to the museum while you're viewing the bikes and vintage race cars.

Dusty, looked at the S3 at Gails today. They want 6750,I laughed at the salesman,I told him Gails would'nt get that price if everything was fixed on it.Just for starters,it needs all turn signals replaced, tires, oil leak fixed, seat torn (patched with electrical tape),clock repaired in dash(held in place by electrical tape),tail section chipped, and tank chipped. There are S3's out there worth that price but certainly not this one.As I said before you can ask any price for anything, but does'nt mean you will get it.

Exactly - he said the shop would look at what they would have to replace to make it street legal to sell, like rear signals, rear tire, and whatnot. I have no idea if they would actually replace them, though.

I can't figure out what the electrical tape on the oil cap/plug was doing. With all that going on, I wonder about the engine. The air cleaner element was mis-matched to the plate it is attached to, and the cover was replaced with carbon fiber. The salesman couldn't tell me if the engine had a stage one or if the guy just used the wrong filters. Makes me wonder about the parts you can't see. The bike has been hacked and abused.

Today my wife and I had several long talks. I mentioned this could be my project bike and I'd offer them a very low price and make it up in parts and sweat, but she plain hates it. She hates everything about it. I showed her photos of yours and some others and she thought they look "ok" but she still refuses to consider an S3 or S3T. And she is stubborn.

I hope someone buys this bike and fixes it up. The tubers have their own special charm.

If it is not going to be her bike then why does it matter if she likes it or not, remeber you will be the one riding it. Maybe she should give in a little, if this is the bike you would really like to get and put some sweat and tears into.

Yup tripper there is a brand new X1 in Columbia, I bet you could get a great deal on.

There is a ring of truth to that statement, and yes I am married for 25 years! When I went to buy my Buell,I took my wife to see the bike for the first time. She saw a bike she liked, found the price of 26,000,I showed her the bike I likes for 8,000..........we left with the 8,000$ bike.

Marriage has to have compromise!! I understand this now that i've been somewhat married, very disfunctionally I may add for the last three years(long story). I for one am probably not the best person to be giving marital advice, but I will give my opinion on this matter since it is a topic of marriage and motorcycles. If indeed your wife is excited about motorcycles and riding you have surpassed many male, married motorcyclists. I for one don't really know many couples whom ride together on their own bikes. Second I would think that if the Blast(Grape) excites and meets all your wifes motorcycle needs, why would she dictate the bike that does the same for you. It sounds to me like she has very little compromise in the area of bikes she would like to see her man on. I would hope you get a bike you like, one that puts that evil grin on your face. One that your proud to ride, fix, show off, clean, upgrade, make payments, and insure. I for one couldn't brag about a bike my wife picked out for me, unless it was the one I wanted and she bought for me. Then it would be ok.

I appreciate the support, but there are other facts that I hadn't elaborated which (voluntarily) give my wife veto power.

One of those facts is: Our original agreement last December was for an H-D (1200C is all I can afford) when I hit 200 lbs (getting closer, but hasn't happened yet). I talked her into the Blast until then, to build my skills with. The S3 (now) would have been a deviation from our agreement in several ways. If I really wanted to force the point, I could get the S3.

I don't want to paint her as the "bad guy". She has been understanding, and allowed the Blast before I reached my goal. However, she is my partner, and we each have a say in financial dealings. It is a measure of how she feels that she would rather spend $10,000 on a new bike, than $4,000-$6,000 on that specific bike. She hates spending money. She buys used jeans off eBay, buys used cars, and so on.

She did say that when I hit 200, I could go look at some S3Ts in better shape, like the gray/orange one in Texas I lust for.

Also, we'll see what new model(s) Buell comes out with for 2006. And, we'll possibly look at a used Dyna or Softail for longer distance rides. Nothing much is cast in concrete at this point.

We'll see what happens. That makes life interesting. She may hate being the "driver" and would rather be the passenger. Who knows. We did our first 2-up Sunday, and have more planned. The situation will settle more near the end of July. (And I'll bet that S3 will still be at Gails.)

The situation changes daily. Except for that "make payments" part. At one time we were deeply in debt. Now we aren't. We will never again buy things on time payments, other than our house.

Dtx - I (my family) will make my mind up by Saturday. It seems we can't decide on our holiday weekend plans until the weekend arrives.......

Depends also on who is going and the desired riding style. I'd like to take some fun roads on at least one leg of the trip, but have no interest in going 20mph or more over the speed limit.

Perhaps someone who is going can PM me and let me know if I should go with the KC MOB or some other folks.....

Tripper,

Believe it or not, there is decent rubber on my bike for once. Brand new rubber on the rear, front is not new but in somewhat decent shape, at least compared to what you are used to seeing on it! : )
