Harley-Davidson To Move 2011 Trike Production In-House From Lehman Trikes

Lehman Trikes has been a strategic supplier for Harley trikes since 2008 and Harley-Davidson has advised them that they will be moving the trike assembly in-house to their York, Pennsylvania production facilities for the 2011 models. Lehman will no longer provide components, paint, and conversion services in the manufacture of the Harley-Davidson® Tri Glide® and Street Glide® trikes, effective with the end of production of Harley-Davidson’s 2010 models in Summer 2010.

Harley decision to move in-house the trike assembly is based purely on the restructuring of Harley-Davidson’s York operations which now provides the opportunity to streamline trike assembly and distribution. Lehman Trikes, based in Spearfish, South Dakota, is a world leader in the manufacture of turnkey trikes, conversion kits and accessories for Harley-Davidson, Victory, Honda, and Suzuki motorcycles. Last summer, Lehman Trikes unveiled their newest trike product, the “CrossBow” for the Victory Vision. Lehman Trikes is traded on the TSX Venture Exchange under the symbol LHT.

Well I guess I'm not that cynical. Since HD is selling fewer motorcycles does it make sense to sub out the construction of the trike when you have the capacity in York? Wouldn't you want to keep your workers employed instead of someone else's?

If HD went into the deal with Lehman as a sort of "testing the waters" venture then they also had the option to stop production if the trikes didn't sell in numbers they needed. Apparently it has become a worthwhile product line.

I'm sure Lehman was made aware of HD's options BEFORE they inked the deal.

So, what does this tell you about Harleys new demographic? This is the new geezer glide, apparently going after a younger market was all bullshit! They are still resticting themselves to an aging market.

HD knows that the demographics will make their average rider to brittle to hold up the average HD at a stop light. The only answer is the trike. This is all just part of their strategy to stick with their current market segment (and no one else) right to the grave.

That's cool! I learned on a tricycle, graduated to a bicycle and then got a motorcycle, all before age 17!

Now us boomers (with less motor control of our bodies) can step off our motorcycles, ride bicycles again for fitness, and then move to trikes before we say goodbye.

Sounds like a good business plan.
