Just picked up my new Dyna FXD and noticed when I got home that the belt was very tight. My last bike was a tuber, and I kept the belt quite loose. How loose do you keep the belt? I believe the manual says around a half inch with 10 foot pounds of pressure, or some such thing.

The service manual for my '06 Road King says:

"Apply 10 pounds (4.5 kg) of force at the midpoint of the bottom belt strand. Check deflection at the loosest spot in the belt with the transmission in neutral and the motorcycle cold.

"Belt deflection should be as follows:

- On jiffy stand without rider or luggage, 10 psi in rear shocks: 1/4 - 5/16 inch (6.4 - 7.9 mm)
- Motorcycle upright with rear wheel in air: 3/16 - 1/4 inch (4.8 - 6.4 mm)"

For what it's worth, when I checked my new '02 Road Pig over on a lift, I too felt the belt was very tight. But, it is within what the book calls for. I run my M2 real loose so it just doesn't seem right but apparently it is.

With the Sportster on a lift so suspension is unloaded, I tension so that I can twist the belt less than 90 degrees but more than 45 degrees with my fingers. Over 90 is to loose and under 45 to tight.

I think you will find this will set it to the force/deflection in the manual.

Don't do this with your Tuber. The belt will be way to tight!

The idea to setting belt tension is to have some slack when the rear axle, drive sprocket center line and the swing arm pivot are in line. This is the maximum length the belt has to deal with.

+1 on what Yo_Barry says. Easy way to get a good check that the tension is about right.

Mine has been in the 90/45 zone for almost 70k miles and still working fine....more than I can say for my Uly, 3rd belt in 20k.
