I have decided to get a new set of pipes for my FXDX. It currently has a set of Screaming Eagle II slip ons that have been on the bike for almost 9 years. I want to go with a good 2 into 1 pipe. I kind of prefer black pipes, but I am not set on that. Many of the pipes are not available in black and often the black is much more expensive.

Anyway, I have 2 questions. Which 2 into 1 do you recommend and where is a good place to buy them? I have found a few discount places on the web that could save me some money, but I don't know anything about them.

Here are a couple of them.

I was able to obtain a set of 2 into 1 from Bassani raw and had them ceramic coated (Embee). Came out really nice. Cost me much as chrome though. If you're really set on black (as I was) you may want to contact the manufacturer directly and see if they'll sell you a 'raw' set or even have a black set made.

D&D make an excellent 2 into 1 exhaust. The D&D Fatcat is a step pipe that ie great for performance. Gives a bit more low end grunt. I have only seen it in chrome though.

Rumbly and good performance.

Any opinions on these?

We love Supertrapp. That would be an excellent choice. Tuneable as well.

One thing to keep in mind is that many custom pipes for Harley Davidsons wil only accommodate forward controls.

The Supertrapp appears that it might be one of those, and it looks like you have mid controls on your bike, Dan.

I spent quite a lot of time trying to find a pipe that would allow the use of mid controls, and would provide the same lean angle as the stock pipes.

I finally gave up.

Jon, the Supertrapp site says that all their Supermeg 2 into 1 pipes work with both mid and forward controls. I can't speak to the lean angle issue, however. Right now, it is my pegs that hit first.

Thanks for the heads up though.

Dan

Another popular, black two into one that allows mid controls is the Thunderheader model 1026B.

Required heat shields seem to be an extra cost item.

Customer service on this brand seems to be variable. I have heard that the company is owned by the Hells Angels.

I can't speak for Big Twins specifically, but I did a comparison of a Supertrapp 2:1 to a Thunderheader on my 2004 Sportster and the difference in power across the whole range made the Supertrapp the clear choice.

Plus, I like the sound of the Supertrapp better.

Supertrapp is an excellent company to deal with as well.
Kevin, the owner of Supertrapp is a friend of ours. They are very good people.

Well, I think I am sold on the Supertrapps. I am leaning towards the Supermegs. They have tons of different pipes though, does anyone recommend a different line? Also, are the Kerker and Supertrapps the same?

Kerker is typically the "cheaper" line and don't use the disc technology.

Supermegs are your only option for a 2:1 on a Dyna. The Kerker version is a carbon-copy of the Supertrapp but without the discs, so it will be louder and untunable.

I have decided on the Supertrapps in black ceramic. Pammy is getting them for me. When I get them and get them installed I'll post up some photos.

Dan, I pulled a couple of strings and the pipe will be here earlier than expected. Probably tomorrow. You can pick it up either, tomorrow, or anytime after Tuesday.

I love it when I get my way...

Ok, I picked up the new pipes from Pam last Saturday and today I finally got a chance to put them on. No problems except the ones I created....but we won't talk about that. Anyway, I think they look great. They are actually quieter than my old Screaming Eagles. I haven't had a chance to ride with them yet. Rainy and all. But I can't wait. I went with the recommended 20 disks, which was all of them. Maybe I'll get a chance to fine tune them one day.

Well, here they are.

Looks very nice.

Shouldn't be any clearance problem, as the rear pipe does not go under the mid controls, as the Thunderheader, and the custom pipe that I have on my machine, do.

This makes the rear header rather shorter than the front, but from XL1200R's post above, that may not make any difference, or may even be better for performance.

I was able to go for a short ride last night, and I really like the sound of them. I honestly can't tell any difference in performance, but I am pretty skeptical when anyone says they can really feel a difference in the power of a bike just from putting on a new exhaust.

The only concern I have is that the rear cylinder head pipe is closer to my right foot now and I thought I noticed more heat. I am not positive though. Could have been my imagination. Anyway, so far I am very pleased. Thanks again Pam and everyone for their advice.

Wow...Spam?

Dan, the exhaust looks good. It is a great performing pipe. If you have issues with the heat, I suppose we could find you a heat shield to see if that helps.

Or...you could wear potholders on your feet...

Thanks Pam. It has a heat shield on it now. It is just the rear head pipe is so much closer to my foot. I really haven't ridden it enough yet to know if it is even an issue. I do like the pipes though. Maybe I'll just strap an "Ove-glove" to my boot

That looks really great! The less chrome in the world the better. Bravo!
