It's been the official advrider salute for a long time. Personally, I don't do it... much.

"How should we handle Harley riders giving us the bird on our rides?"

I've NEVER had another motorcyclist flip me off in all my years of riding, but I think if one was out looking for trouble, they might be able to find it!

I ALWAYS wave at EVERY motorcycle rider! Just a habit I got into years ago.

Last year I got flipped off by a guys S.O. riding on the back of his Tourglide. I didn't react at all, but it just left me kind of stunned. I thought about it all day and couldn't let it go.

What bothered me the most is that fact that to me, and most of the people on this site, riders are supposed to be some sort of brotherhood (or sisterhood).

When someone does anything to undermine that, it really bothers me.

i've never been flipped off, but at least they look and acknowledge that your there.

its better than not being waved at/looked at in my eyes. being ignored feels worse. unless we're in traffic and its a little hectic, then i don't blame them. open road, do something(wave, flip off, throw something...lol)

over here i don't get waved at ever, but i'm also bikeless...haha

Bill, stuff like that bugs me, too. Usually, if I've got my head aimed the right direction, I consider the source and take DD's position: I'm glad I'm not the pathetic pinhead waving the finger flag.

Here's a related story, with not much of a moral, but I'm hopin' it might be entertaining to y'all nonetheless:

Many moons ago, during a Buell-sponsored weekend "adventure" gig somewhere (time frame and location omitted to protect the guilty) I went out partying one night with the boyz from the Buell demo crew.

I had asked around and discovered there was a biker bar in this particular town, and we - about a dozen of us, all on Buells - descended upon the place about 9 o'clock Saturday night.

The place was jumpin'!

And by gawd we slotted our Buells right amongst the hordes of parked Harleys, just as normal and regular as you please, mighty proud we'd found the place (my nav skills were already a little impaired at this point...), and lookin' forward to some raucous rockin' with our people.

And I hadn't got three feet before some bro's "old lady," who appeared to be about two-and-a-half sheets to the wind, gave us a vile, volatile, foul-mouthed rant for riding mangy, low-down, good-for-nothing RICE ROCKETS, and -A we'd better get the outta there before someone kicked our collective asses!!

Before I had a chance to say, "Um, ma'am, squint a little harder through them beery eyes of yours and you may note the 'Buell American Motorcycles' logo on the tanks," her "old man," who knew exactly where our motors were made and that we were indeed righteous, gave her the one of the nastiest tongue-lashings I've ever witnessed in public, calling her an ignorant b*tch in about every way possible, right in front of not only us Buelligans, but everyone else in the joint.

She was pretty much sans speech at this point, and slithered into a hole somewhere and was never seen again.

Yep, us Buellers did y'all proud that night, and the party lasted for hours. SOME how we all made it back to our motel in more or less one piece (at least one of us - nope, not naming any names - prolly shoulda spent the night in The Hotel with Gray Bars...), and then, as now, I'm thankful to be the kind of person that appreciates ALL bikes, not just the one I happen to be riding at the moment.

See, told you there wasn't much moral. : D

I have another story with no clear moral.

A friend cut someone off by mistake and when the guy honked his horn, my friend's (now ex) crazy wife flipped the guy off and yelled "F**K YOU" out the window.

When they got stopped at the next traffic light, the guy they cut off was a few cars behind them. He got out of his vehicle with a baseball bat and smashed out the rear window on their Blazer.

My friend said the guy just walked back to his truck, got back in, and waited for the light to turn green.

The moral?

If there is one?

There are some seriously crazy people out there. Watch that middle finger!

Wolfie, in case anyone looks, you can mitigate the damages somewhat by doing this:

This is my FJR in '05 "decorated" for me 'n D's trip to Laguna Seca (GO NICKY!!!)

Fastest, quickest, most powerful bike I've ever owned. Sold it a year/12,000 miles after I bought it, slightly bored with the ability to cruise two-up at 150 mph without breaking a sweat (the bike, not me), and got the Road King.

These days I get my kicks flipping off insecure Buell riders... ; )

It all goes back to the street cred and pink panties my friend

And I repeat, I don't know too many guys who can wear pink panties in public (proudly, I might add!) and still have a shred of cred remaining. That says a lot about you, my brudda - I don't know what it says, but it says a lot. : D

Yo Ochoa, wussup with this thread? Do me and Wolf and Spidey have to desecrate it even further (bring on the pink panty pix!) before you'll chime in with what prompted your question?

Wave, or don't and ride on. My day is gonna be better than his.

Been there. Because my job has me dealing with rude people on a regular basis this has become a regular occurrence (whether on the bike or not).

Perhaps Ochoa was considering his list of options and wanted more input. This can be a startling experience when you are out having a good time and waving howdy to your brother. Might even fall off your bike in surprise if you spend too many years riding before it happens.

I've always found the single digit greeting to be:
A) An attempt to gain attention.
B) The "greeter's" IQ.
C) Both of the above.

The answer is C. Ignore and ride on.

Just ride on and ignore. People are funny.

Understand, first, that apparently these people give you, and your motorcycle, the power to make them angry. Don't give lesser minds the power to may you angry.

Well I've heard that it is better to have one in the hand, than two in the bush right? So next time someone does give you another bird, just thank them and ride on.Don't forget to put your helmet back on though.

due to the current state of the economy, the gub'ment has decided that a bird in the hand is now only worth one in the bush.
