Going to look at a 1964 XLCH this afternoon. Anything I should be looking for aside from broken fins or cracked/repaired cases?

How original is it?
How complete is it?
How modified is it?
How trashed and beaten is it?
How much is it?
Where is it?
And check the VIN number, there was a lot of creative paperwork happening in the 60's and 70's along with some very well crafted metalwork manipulation.

Mike -

-It is a '64 engine in a '64 frame
-Running bike in good shape, plus extra parts (heads, carbs, intakes, air cleaners, fenders, etc)
-It has extended forks on it (he has the stock front end), 2-up seat and sissy bar. Engine has a stroker kit in it, probably done up heads and cams as well.
-Doesn't look to be abused. The guy owned it for 40 years.
-$4500
-I don't think frames had numbers back then... am I wrong?

Big twins didn't have frame numbers 'til '69, not sure about the XLs, but doubt if any different.
Look at the rear right case for repairs - the corner of the tranny case was a weak spot and would crack or even break off if power shifted too much. It's not uncommon to see early XL motors repaired there (you will see the welds) and if done right will not degrade the bike's value all that much. View area behind and below drive sprocket from below and from rear - a mirror will help.

Stroker motors WILL over power this weak spot - I've seen a friend of mine pick half of third gear off of the top of his swingarm where it was lodged against the shattered case! He had it fixed and (with a new trans, of course!) was back on the road in 2 weeks!
That was a 68 XLCH.

If the weak spot in the tranny has been repaired well it is actually stronger than original.

The flange around the primary is what broke on the cases... something about having a belt primary that broke or something. The are quite a few welds there, but they look done right and it's been like that forever, so I'm not too worried.

The stroker kit is mild - using the flywheels from a k-model.

The bike looked pretty good overall so I bought it. Hadn't run in weeks and it started on the 4th or 5th kick. I'm pumped.

When do we get to see what it looks like?

This is how it looks now...

And I'd like to look as close to this as possible when i'm done...

Sweet '64--is my age showing?

It looks like a pretty easy restoration from the cosmetic side-front fender, stock length fork tubes, seat, mufflers, paint, gas cap...

If it's mechanically sound, I'd say you've got a winner there.

Road - my thoughts exactly. The paint on it is pretty nice - black with dark silver ghost flames (hard to see in pics), so I'll probably go for all new sheet metal and sell these tins as a set.

She's all there, just needs cleaned up some and a few things replaced. The guy really didn't butcher it up too bad.

...and don't worry about your age... this bike is 19 years older than I am, lol.

For anyone who's interested...

The guy bought the bike 1967 and did the motor work in 1968. Model K flywheels make it a slight stroker, it either has P or PB cams (or a combination), 2" intake valves and some port work, Dytch pistons making for 11.5:1 compression. Solid lifters.

I'm just trying to decide on the exhaust - i want something more stock-like, but can't decide if I want the shorty duals or the more classic 2:1 system. I've seen conflicting reports on what would have come on the bike.

Agreed. I did some playing around with paint (poor man's photoshop) and the 2:1 just don't look right, so the shorty duals with the tapered mufflers are what I'm going with.

Might look okay, but I'd have to see it on the bike first:

I think the 2:1 systems make the bike look longer, which I don't like.
