I've had my exhaust off a few times and it is a pain to remove the belt tensioner. My question is how do you take the tension off. I read that you have to loosen the pinch bolts on rear axle but i must be doing something wrong. What is the easiest way????

if you have a wobble socket you dont even need to remove the tensioner. after lossining the pinch bolt loosen the axle out as far as you can before unthreading all the way the axle is tappered to adjust the belt.

yes, you have been advised correctly, it is NOT necessary to remove the tensioner. However if you wish to do so, first remove the (2) rear axle pinch bolts, then loosen (rotate Counterclockwise) the rear axle around 15 full turns. this will relieve all tension from the drive belt. the tensioner can then be romoved very easily by ccw rotation of the (2) 9/16 hex nuts fastening it to the crankcase assembley.
also i would highly recommend the service manual as your very next acquisition.

i saw the pinch bolt on the same side as the belt... i need to remove the tensioner because i have a aftermarket exhaust and the clamp is right behind it. I tried loosening the axle but i guess i didn't go far enough. I was concerned that my bike might fall over......why would i buy a service manual....the bulletin board is full of answers

You're supporting the rear of the bike, how, exactly? Please tell me it's not on the sidestand with you rotating the axle out while you work on the bike!?!?!

When re-fitting the new exhaust it is a good idea to turn the clamps around so that they are accessed from the left side of the bike instead of the right. That way you won't have to go through the hassle of removing the tensioner every time you want to remove the muffler.

You could probably loosen the axle enough to release the tension on the idler fine with the bike on the sidestand.

That being said, it's really easy to slap a couple $9 jack stands under each side of the rear swingarm, that's all I do.

If you can't undo the axle safely but need to remove the tensioner, run a ratchet tie down strap from the seat through the top of the rear wheel. Pull it tight before you start ratcheting. This will compress the suspension, which in effect will release enough tension from the belt to be able to wiggle the tensioner off. This was brought to you buy your friendly roadside McGyver. (Not my idea but I did supply the tie-down)

If you loosen the axle about 15 turns you can take the idler pulley off with no problem while still on the side stand.
