Hello all.
I just got my 03 XB9R and man the engine seems loud.Seems low to me but its hard to tell.Took it to Chosa's and had a service guy listen to it and he said it may be ready to grenade but he also said he has herd them sound like that.Other words he didn't know.I then took it to an independent shop with a guy that was Buell trained and had him adjust the primary and it seemed quieter at the time but by the time I got home it was pretty noisy again.I changed all the oils but its still there. Are these engine just noisy?
Also I wasn't sure where to post this.It is a little confusing here with all the archives and different forums but I'll figure it out.
Thanks all.

Phil: can you tell us more about the noise?? The valve train on the XB sounds like you have a box of rocks running around in the top end. Super noisy, but safe.

Well it,to me seems low.Its a loud rattle that is not a consistant tap.
Sounds like it could be from the primary.
Most noticable when hot and at idle.you can hear it when you raise the Rs but almost seems to go away at higher rpms. When you turn it off it make noise for an split second after switching it off.
Runs good though.
I have an FXDL also but with the pipes you really can't hear the engine.
Thanks for any advice

Just put a louder exhaust on it and then it will sound normal.

You are not the first person to ask about the noisy engine. Although you should watch for special noises (like the engine pinging - someone had that problem), most of it is the engine noise. There are four cams (mechanical...not chain like the twin cams) plus all the associated valve train parts, plus the primary. As Thanes said, you won't notice it so much if you put a louder exhaust on it, ha ha!

I understand your concern, but ride it and don't smile too big as you wheelie away from the red lights

I don't know phils, that sounds funky to me. Get it checked out by an EXPERIENCED tech pronto. I wouldn't risk it with my bike.

Agree with you mostly. I have had lots of Quad Cam engines...really very noisy compared to other engines, but if there is a major problem, oil pump failure or something, it needs to be corrected pronto. I have a friend on a Sportster who rather foolishly tried to race me on the Buell. His topend is now dry...trying to figure out why it is not getting oil. Sounds like oil pump failure to me. Too, the oil in the Sportster does not always return as it should when running high RPMs. However, his is bone dry after riding it another 75 miles...Ouch!

BTW, does anyone know if the oil pump on the Buell a high capacity pump compared to the Sportys?

have someone check the comp sprocket, sportsters had a prblem with them coming loose that allwos for some extra bottom end noise. but valve train nois is normal.

Philsbuell, just got a buell myself and yeah the things makes a bunch of noises and way different ones than any of the I4s or the twin I had before. So I would have to pile in with everyone saying it sounds like someone is shaking a box of hammers right under your nuts. Personally I think the noise gives the bike more personality but at the moment I'm so entranced with my new buell that if it was on fire I'd probably claim that was a feature too.

If you're really concerned about it, I'd run it down to Chandler HD/B for a 2nd opinion.
