Have them run your VIN thru H-D net Make sure the wheel bearing have been changed to the new ones(red seals) Kickstand should have a R in the foot. That's it. | ||

Hi, Bake. So, I'm getting the other XB9R from Pete (yes...he had 2)--got my deposit down, will be signing paperwork next week. I've spoken to Pete at length about recalls--the only two I know of are wheel bearings (the one on the showroom floor needed them done, as it had the black seals on the bearings) and sidestand. There is a recalls page on this board--access from the main page. There are other issues with the 03s--there's a more recent Gates belt, and I've heard about issues with the speedo sensor, and some guys complain about the short mirror stalks (the passenger peg brackets are also quite short). I started a similar thread about a year ago--I'll post it if I can find it. Anyway, I think it'd be fun to meet up sometime over the summer--maybe Nakusp? Hey, do you work for BCH by any chance? Hey Geoffg Glad to hear you got one too, is Pete aware and willing to do the recalls on your bike? Did you talk about getting the Gates belt and the priceing? Wonder if it's my bike on the showroom floor, is it white? A meet in Nakusp would be great, my girlfriend is allways in for a ride on her sportster. I may elect do ride my Laverda, depends on the mood of the day. I work for a company called Canadian Hydro from Calgary, they just happen to have 2 hydro dams in our local area. bake | ||

Bake, The seat on the early XB9R's has a tendency to cut into the insulation on the positive battery cable. Easy fix by shaving a bit of plastic off the underside of the seat. | ||

Bake, BOTH the leftover 03 XB9R's are white--I don't know which of us will get the showroom bike and which the one from the back--Pete says the VIN's have been assigned, but he's not sure which is which. He has told me the recalls (bearings and stand) will be done. I've discussed the belt with him (newest part number is G0500.02A8R), but as this is not a recall item, I'd probably just purchase it at the time of sale for a good discount--same with the 12 airbox. Pete has also told me (via e-mail, so I have it in writing, sort of) that the warranty would be honoured for 2 years (the 03's came originally with only one year). And, be aware the belt is a warranty item. Never heard of Canadian Hydro, but I've done work at both Revelstoke and Mica dams for BCH. I'd like to speak to whoever is in charge of maintenance at your dams--wouldn't be you, would it? | ||

I have my VIN number already as my bike is paid for, glad to hear Pete is willing to do the recalls. As far as the dam business I was hired on for maintenance (electrician) 3 of us share the duties of keeping 2 of them running. Is Canadian Hydro the same as BC Hydro? Just curious, I'm a power system operator down here in the states. | ||

I don't understand this recall thing. I had called my local Buell dealer in the past and they ran my VIN and said no work needed to be done. I just dropped it off for some other service work and brought up the possblity of bearings needing to be replaced. I even mentioned the difference in bearing color and the sidestand. Again, they simply ran the VIN and said no work needed to be done. I clearly see a lack of the letter "R" on the sidestand and the fact that the bearings are black. Kind of driving me a bit nuts. Guessing I need to physically hand them the service forms and say, "Here you go, says so right here." | ||

PC, The bearings don't show up as a recall because they weren't a recall. Same thing with the kickstand. Have them call tech services(it's the same number they call for HD tech) and they will tell them how to get it done. | ||

Kickstand was a recall. It started as a program and then was a recall B-048. But there are dates that your bike needs to fall between to be part of the recall, it may not be affected. But, yeah, the bearings wont show up. | ||

Bearings would seize at 7500 to 8000 miles. Caused some wrecks, as reported here on the BWB. Sidestand, as I understand it, met Federal Safety Standards, but the bike could vibrate off the stand and fall if left idling unattended. | ||

On early 03 9s, the sidestand could fold up, allowing the bike to fall over and break the clutch lever and turn signal. Mine was one. Apparently none of the later '03s had this issue, so it is quite possible that your bike doesn't need it. The computer would tell them from the VIN. If your bike isn't in the batch that doesn't need it changed, you are fine. As far as the bearings are concerned, apparently the earlier seals didn't work as well and allowed water to get in and corrode the bearings if you rode in a lot of wet weather or used spray car washes. Anyhow, this is what I heard. Mine still has the old bearings in it, but I will replace them at the next tire change. |
