I can't believe it, but I managed to snap my rear axle while taking it off.

I was loosening it clockwise due to the fact I thought the threads were reversed. Now half the axle shaft is still in there. About 3/4 of an inch is sticking out on the left-hand side of the bike.

What should I do at this point?

I already know I pulled a Gomer here, so please take it easy on me.

Thanks.

First, order a new one.

Second, get a pipe wrench and take it out (counter-clockwise). Make sure threads aren't messed up in the swingarm. I suspect they may be.....if so, unless someone has a very big tap you may need a new swingarm.

Third, buy a shop manual.....

I hope youre threads are ok & you get her back on the road a.s.a.p.

you don't have the wheel out yet i think ?
but you have the broken axcel peace from the right side out ?

wiggle you wheel as far to the right as possible
and as sayed, get a small pipe wrench and get to the axel ( left peace ) on the inside off the swingarm and pray
goodluck

The wheel is not out. I've removed everything I can to get the wheel as far right as possible.

My 10" pipe wrench won't fit. It's too wide. Perhaps an 8" will work.

This sucks.

Dago,I broke mine off about a month ago.Mine just seized up on the way out.I got the ire over as far as possible and cut the axle off.I then had to cut the axle that was left in the swingarm into pieces to get it out of the swingarm, the threads ended up with a few cuts in the threads but there is nothing you can do.I have had mine put back together for about a month now and no problem

Thanks for all the great advice.

I wound up moving the wheel over as far as possible and then cutting the axle with a hack saw. I was then able to unscrew the remaining axle piece with a pipe wrench.

End the end, nothing was scratched. And all I lost was some skin over my knuckles,1 rear axle, and a perfect 70 degree day on the bike.

Some plumbers Vise-Grips may be able to slip inbetween the area you have.

Glad it didn't get any worse.

No doubt Glitch.

My S > R conversion is officially complete. Today would have been the maiden run. I must say, it looks damned sweet. I'll take some picks when I get the wheel back on.

A big thanks goes out to Dave and the HD-Appleton crew for all their help. They all went above and beyond.

So you're going to need an axle?
I can pull one off a new bike for you tomorrow if you want.

I'll be in after 10 tomorrow or just email me and I'll get the ball rolling today from Iowa.

Dave
