is there any oiled foam type air filters available for XB's. i have seen properly serviced K/N filters pass very fine silt on xr600r dirt bike,so have some reservation in using them. oiled foam stops everything, does K/N fabric breathe better than foam?

There is a open cell foam replacement for the tuber's stock airbox (Hi Flow AF element, p/n #5038) that is sold by American Sport Bike. This unit is made by Wink Ellar (sp?) of Land speed Record fame, I'm told by Tat.

However there is not, as yet, an equivalent product for the XBs. I would be overjoyed to buy such a product for my Firebolt if it existed because, when I installed the Hi Flow filter in my 96 Lightning which was running a K&N element, I immediately noticed a seat-of-the-pants increase in throttle response and acceleration. I can only assume that such characterizations would apply to the XBs as well.

Be advised though that the open cell foam material in the Hi-Flow AF does not filter as well as the K&N AF. BUT, I've been running the Hi-Flow in my 96 Lightning for over 73890 miles ( I can prove it!) and it hasn't hurt the performance or longevity of the engine one bit. I'd say your concern for filtering silt is a non-issue for normal street bike use unless you ride on dirt roads. Do you plan on off-roading your XB?

It'd be nice if some one made a foam pre filter to go over the K&N for those who ride in extremely dusty areas.

no off roading for my city cross, although it feels capable , thats part of its charm aay. just using dirt riding experience for extreme evaluation of air filters. the K/N was sold for XR 600 , tried it and it passed "grit", could see it in air boot. this was before the foam pre- filters. you can buy the pre-filter foam in bulk [a roll, 6ft long ?] from UNI and i have some from amsoil, not sure how i came across the amsoil foam.
